Use W3C’s WCAG 2.2 guidance as your reference, work through the visible content and interactions, and combine a checker with manual review. A clean scan is not proof that a site is accessible: W3C says evaluation tools can assist but cannot determine accessibility, and knowledgeable human evaluation is required. The same general web accessibility guidance applies to AI-generated output; the sources here establish no separate AI accessibility certification.
Decide what you are checking before you start
“The layout” can mean one screen, a reusable template, or a whole site. It can also mean the page’s appearance alone or the complete experience, including menus, forms, dialogs, and other interactive states. Write down the boundaries of the review before using a checker so that a result for one page is not mistaken for a verdict on the whole site.

- Page or flow: Name the URL, page type, or sequence of steps you will inspect. If you are checking a user journey, include its important screens and controls.
- Target: Record the conformance level if your project has specified one. WCAG 2.2 is the W3C guideline reference used here; the appropriate target depends on the site’s requirements, which cannot be determined from the fact that a layout was AI-generated. W3C says WCAG 2.2 became a Recommendation on 5 October 2023. See What’s New in WCAG 2.2.
- Review context: Note the browser and device context you actually used, plus which parts of the page were generated and which a person subsequently changed. This makes findings easier to reproduce and helps identify whether a problem appears in the generated output or in later edits.
- Coverage: Say whether the review covers a single rendered page, a representative sample, or a broader set of site pages. Keep this scope visible in any report or handoff.
W3C’s WCAG-EM overview provides a structured methodology for conformance evaluation. It is useful even when your immediate task is a smaller first review: defining the scope keeps the conclusions proportional to what was actually checked.
Inspect the page as a visitor would use it
Open the actual page in a browser and examine its rendered content. A mock-up cannot show whether a control works, whether focus is visible, or how generated text and images appear in the finished page. If the page has menus, forms, expanding sections, or other interactive elements, exercise them rather than judging only their default appearance. W3C’s guidance for specific evaluation contexts distinguishes templates from generated content: for dynamically generated pages, checking templates alone is insufficient. See Evaluation Approaches for Specific Contexts.

Check the page title
Look at the browser tab and confirm that the page has a title that identifies it. A generic, missing, or repeated title may make it harder to distinguish this page from other open pages. Check the rendered page rather than assuming that a title visible in an AI design prompt was carried through into the site.
Check image text alternatives
Review images in context and ask whether their information or purpose is available to someone who cannot see them. Meaningful images need text alternatives that convey the relevant information; decorative images should not be given descriptions that add distracting, irrelevant content. Inspect the actual image and its role on the page rather than accepting automatically generated alternative text without review. If an image contains information essential to understanding the page, check that the alternative preserves that information.

Scan the page’s headings to see whether they describe the sections that follow and establish a usable structure. Then look at the broader page structure: content should not rely on visual placement alone to communicate how sections and controls relate. A polished arrangement can still leave underlying structure unclear, so inspect the rendered page and its markup or use an appropriate checker to surface issues for follow-up.

Check text contrast and resizing
Look for text that is difficult to distinguish from its background, including text placed over imagery or colored surfaces. Pay attention to smaller text, secondary labels, and text in less prominent parts of the layout, not only the main heading. Also resize the page or its text and check whether the content remains readable and usable. Watch for text that disappears, overlaps, is clipped, or becomes difficult to follow after resizing. These visual checks help identify concerns, but they do not establish conformance by themselves.
Check keyboard access and visible focus
Set the mouse aside and move through the page using a keyboard. Check that you can reach and operate the important controls, and watch the visible focus indicator as it moves. The focused item should be identifiable as you navigate; if focus is difficult to see, disappears, or seems to jump in a confusing order, record the control and the state where it happens. Try the interaction itself, not just reaching the control. W3C’s G202 technique describes ensuring keyboard control for all functionality.
Include the controls that matter to the page’s purpose: for example, links to important content, navigation, buttons that open or close something, and controls in a form. Do not infer keyboard support from the appearance of a button or from a scan result; verify the behavior in the browser.

Check forms, labels, and errors
If the page contains a form, confirm that its fields have labels that make their purpose clear. Try a normal submission and, where possible, one that produces an error. Check whether the error is identifiable and whether the affected field or required correction is clear. A form that looks complete in a screenshot may not provide enough information when someone interacts with it, so inspect the actual labels, messages, and control states.

Check moving or blinking content
Look for animation, auto-moving content, blinking elements, and other motion that could distract or make information hard to use. Record where it appears and whether it affects the ability to read or operate the page. A static preview can conceal motion that appears only after the page loads or an interaction begins.
Check multimedia alternatives
If the page includes audio or video, look for alternatives that make its information available in another form. Review the media actually used on the page rather than assuming that a player or decorative frame provides an alternative. Note what media is present and which alternatives you checked.
Use automated tools to find candidates, not to issue a verdict
A checker can help surface possible accessibility issues, but its output needs interpretation. W3C explains that tools cannot check every aspect of accessibility and can produce misleading results. Its tool-selection guidance puts the boundary plainly: “Web accessibility evaluation tools can not determine accessibility, they can only assist in doing so.” Read Selecting Web Accessibility Evaluation Tools before treating a tool’s features or score as evidence of conformance.
Choose a tool according to what it can actually inspect and what is in scope. A scan of a single page is not evidence about every generated page, and an automated scan cannot replace trying the controls with a keyboard or evaluating aspects that require human judgment. If a tool flags something, inspect the specific element and decide whether the finding reflects a real barrier. If it reports no issues, continue with the manual checks.

- Run the tool on the rendered page or component you scoped. Keep track of the URL or page state so you can return to the same output.
- Review each reported issue in context. Confirm which content or control is involved and whether the problem is present in the rendered page. Do not assume every flag is a confirmed failure.
- Look for things the scan cannot settle. Check the image’s purpose, whether a label is meaningful, whether a focus indicator is easy to follow, and whether each important interaction works from the keyboard.
- Record both findings and coverage. Note what the tool inspected, what you checked manually, and what remains outside the review.
W3C’s Evaluating Web Accessibility Overview explains why the combined approach matters: “Knowledgeable human evaluation is required to determine if a site is accessible.” A tool result is evidence to investigate, not a substitute for that evaluation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Review generated pages, not only the reusable layout
An AI-generated site may reuse a layout while filling it with different content. That content can change what a visitor needs to understand: a heading may be missing, an image may have a different purpose, or a page may include controls or media absent from the template. W3C says that for dynamically generated pages, evaluating templates alone is insufficient; generated content can also contain or require accessible markup. The relevant question is therefore not only “Does this template look acceptable?” but also “Does the rendered page produced from this template work with its actual content and interactions?”
For a larger site, include representative views in the sample. Select examples that show meaningful variations in page type or content rather than assuming one clean page proves the rest are alike. Record which pages you sampled and why. If the generator produces materially different content or states, include those variations in the review as well. This is sampling, not proof that every possible generated output has been evaluated.
When a problem recurs across pages, note whether it appears to come from a shared template, from particular generated content, or from a later change. That distinction helps a designer or developer identify what to correct and which additional pages should be checked after a change. Keep the scope of your conclusion aligned with the sample: findings from the pages you inspected apply directly to those pages, while uninspected variations remain unverified.

Choose the review method that matches the conclusion you need
A quick first review, a tool-assisted investigation, and a formal conformance evaluation answer different questions. Use a method whose coverage and evidence match the statement you intend to make.
| Approach | What it covers | What it can establish | What remains to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preliminary first review | A page or small set of pages checked against observable basics such as title, alternatives, structure, contrast, resizing, keyboard access, focus, forms, motion, and media. | Potential problems worth fixing or investigating; a useful initial picture of the page. | It is not a comprehensive audit or proof of conformance. W3C describes Easy Checks as a first review, not a complete evaluation. |
| Automated or tool-assisted review | The elements and issues the chosen tool can inspect in the pages or components included. | Candidate issues and evidence that can guide manual investigation. | Tool capabilities and coverage vary. Findings may be misleading, and a clean result does not establish accessibility. |
| Human evaluation | Rendered content, meaning, and interactions that require inspection and judgment; it can be paired with tools. | Informed findings about what was actually evaluated by the reviewer. | Conclusions still depend on the scope, sample, method, and reviewer’s work. Unchecked pages or states remain outside the evidence. |
| Conformance evaluation | A defined product or site scope, explored and sampled according to a documented method, followed by evaluation and reporting. | A structured account of the scope, sample, method, and results for the evaluated material. | It should not be described more broadly than the pages and states included in that evaluation. |
The table is not a ladder where a scan automatically becomes an audit. It is a way to match a review’s method to the claim you need to make. W3C’s guidance on evaluation tools and its WCAG-EM methodology provide the relevant distinctions.
Document the scope, sample, and findings
If you are reporting results to a client, team, or site owner, give them enough detail to understand what was and was not checked. WCAG-EM organizes a conformance evaluation into five steps: define the evaluation scope, explore the target website, select a representative sample, evaluate the sample, and report the findings. W3C published WCAG-EM 2 on 23 July 2026; see the WCAG-EM overview for the methodology.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Define the evaluation scope. Identify the site, page or flow, target conformance level if specified, and the browser or device context used.
- Explore the product. Determine what pages, content types, and interactive states exist, including which outputs vary by generated content.
- Select and record a representative sample. Name the pages or views reviewed and note which important variations they cover.
- Evaluate the sample. Record the manual checks and tools used, the findings, and the page or control where each issue occurred.
- Report the outcome. Separate confirmed observations from tool flags that need further investigation, and identify parts of the site or functionality that were not included.
W3C’s Template for Accessibility Evaluation Reports says a conformance review combines semi-automated tools with manual evaluation by an experienced reviewer. A useful report therefore does not reduce the outcome to a scan score. It explains the scope, sample, method, observed results, and remaining gaps so another person can understand the limits of the conclusion.
Turn findings into a focused follow-up
When you find a barrier, capture its location, the page state in which it appeared, what you were doing, and what happened. A description such as “keyboard focus vanished after opening the navigation” is more actionable than “navigation failed.” For a checker flag, include the element and whether you confirmed the issue manually. Avoid turning an unverified flag into a confirmed defect or treating a passed check as evidence of conformance.
After a correction, revisit the affected rendered page and the relevant interaction. If the cause is shared across generated pages, include representative outputs that use the same template or content pattern in the follow-up. Record the pages and states you rechecked. This creates a clear distinction between a corrected finding and parts of the site that have not yet been reviewed.
W3C’s preliminary checks are a practical starting point, but a larger or higher-stakes site may need a broader evaluation. Whether a legal or sector-specific requirement applies, and which conformance target is appropriate, depends on the project’s jurisdiction and context. The fact that a layout came from an AI generator does not answer those questions.
