Your application is not complete merely because the broker app shows a submission confirmation.
Use the issue’s offer information for its bid dates, price or price band, lot size and mandate deadline. SEBI does not publish one universal cutoff time for every IPO, so the issue-specific instructions control.

What you need before starting
- An IPO open for applications and its official bid and mandate deadlines.
- An eligible application channel, such as a registered stockbroker, syndicate member, registrar and transfer agent, or depository participant. SEBI identifies these intermediary types for UPI submissions in its investor guidance.
- A UPI ID linked to the bank account of the person applying. SEBI says third-party UPI IDs or bank accounts are not considered for allocation.
- A UPI app and handle that support public-issue mandates. Check SEBI’s public-issue UPI app list immediately before applying; the page identifies intermediary registrations as of March 7, 2025 and may change.
- Enough available balance for the bid amount. ASBA blocks the money rather than transferring it immediately, but the account must be able to accept the block.
- Your UPI PIN for authorizing the mandate.
Broker app submission versus bank or UPI app approval
These are related but distinct roles. A broker or another eligible intermediary can collect the bid and UPI ID and submit the application. A supported bank or UPI app can receive the request to block the money and let you authorize it. Some providers may offer both functions, but you should verify the provider’s eligibility and the exact feature instead of assuming every bank app can submit an IPO bid.

Step-by-step: applying through UPI
1. Read the issue’s application terms
Before opening an app, check the official offer information for the IPO’s opening and closing dates, category rules, price or price band, lot size and the exact time by which the UPI mandate must be accepted. The general SEBI page does not establish a single cutoff applicable to all issues. Treat the deadline shown in the issue instructions as controlling, and do not wait for the final minutes.
Check these details together rather than relying on a headline or an old notification. The category you select, the quantity or lots you request and the price you enter must correspond to the issue’s terms. If the issue shows a price band, use the price choice offered by the application flow and review the resulting amount before submitting. Keep the offer document or official issue instructions available so you can compare the app’s fields with the source information.
2. Choose an eligible application route
Open the IPO section of a registered stockbroker or another intermediary permitted for public-issue applications. SEBI’s listed categories include syndicate members, registered stockbrokers, registrars and transfer agents, and depository participants. If you start in a bank app, check whether that app is actually authorized to collect and submit IPO bids; a bank app may only be the place where the mandate is approved.
Eligibility is about the role the provider is performing, not simply whether it is a familiar financial brand. A provider can be useful for UPI authorization without being the channel that submits the IPO application. Confirm the service description and the public-issue support shown by the provider, and use the current SEBI list for the relevant UPI app and handle.
3. Enter the bid and your own UPI ID
Select the issue and enter the requested category, lot or quantity and price details exactly as instructed. When the form asks for a UPI ID, enter one linked to the applicant’s own bank account. Do not use a family member’s, friend’s or another person’s UPI ID or bank account: SEBI’s guidance says third-party details are not considered for allocation.
Check spelling and punctuation in the UPI ID before moving on. The mandate will be routed using this identifier, so an ID belonging to another account holder creates both an identity mismatch and a practical risk that you will not see the request in your own app. If more than one UPI profile is available on your phone, note which one corresponds to the ID submitted in the application.
4. Submit the application
Review the bid and submit it through the intermediary. Save the application or reference number and note the time shown by the app. This confirmation demonstrates that the bid was sent to the intermediary; it does not by itself prove that the UPI mandate has been accepted.
Recommended Free Tools
At this point, verify the displayed issue name, applicant name, category, quantity, price and UPI ID once more. A successful submission message is useful evidence if you need support, but it is only the first leg of the process. Do not close the task until you have checked the UPI app for the separate authorization request.

5. Find and approve the UPI mandate
The sponsor or escrow bank sends a request to the supported UPI app to authorize blocking the application amount. Open the UPI app associated with the ID you entered, locate the public-issue request and check its details before approving it. Authorize the request with your UPI PIN. Use only an app and UPI handle appearing on SEBI’s public-issue list, and recheck that list because its registration information is dated March 7, 2025.
Read the mandate screen as a funds-blocking instruction, not as a request to transfer the entire amount immediately. Check that the issue and applicant details correspond to your bid and that the amount is one you expected from the quantity and price entered. Approve only after those details match. Never disclose your UPI PIN to the broker, bank, caller or anyone claiming to be assisting with the application; the PIN is entered only in the authorized UPI interface.
6. Confirm acceptance before the deadline
Return to the broker or intermediary application status, if that status is available, and check that the mandate is accepted rather than waiting for the initial “submitted” message alone. Keep the acceptance confirmation and reference numbers. If the request is still absent or pending, contact the intermediary or bank promptly and follow the issue’s instructions; there is no universal remedy or cutoff published for every issue.

How the ₹5 lakh UPI limit applies
SEBI’s investor guidance states a UPI IPO application limit of ₹5 lakh per transaction for retail individual investors. It is a procedural ceiling, not a guarantee of eligibility or allotment. Confirm the issue’s category requirements and current instructions before relying on that figure, particularly if you are not applying as a retail individual investor.
The limit does not remove the need to satisfy the issue’s own category and application rules. It also does not mean that an application below the ceiling will receive shares. Treat the amount as the maximum identified in SEBI’s general UPI guidance for the specified retail category, and check the live issue documents if the category, intermediary or current rules differ.
What happens to your money under ASBA
ASBA means the application amount is blocked in your bank account while the issue is processed. The money remains in your account, subject to the block, instead of being paid in full at the time of bidding. SEBI explains this mechanism in its ASBA investor guidance, and the NSE ASBA procedure describes the same flow.
Because the funds are blocked, your available balance may be lower even though you do not see an immediate debit. Look for a lien, hold or blocked-amount entry in the bank account and compare it with the mandate details. Keep enough funds available for the authorized block until the allocation process is completed; spending the amount or allowing another transaction to consume it can interfere with processing.

| Allocation result | Effect on the blocked amount |
|---|---|
| Shares are allotted | The amount applicable to the allotment is debited from the blocked funds. |
| Only part of the requested shares is allotted | The amount corresponding to the allotment is debited and the excess block is released. |
| No shares are allotted | The blocked amount is released after the allocation process. |
A mandate authorization is therefore permission to block funds, not an immediate full payment. The eventual debit depends on the allocation outcome. A release may appear as removal of the lien or restoration of available balance rather than as a separate incoming payment, depending on how the bank displays account activity.
Common problems and what to check
The bid is submitted but no mandate was approved
Submission and mandate authorization are separate steps. Open the UPI app linked to the submitted ID and look for the request. If it is not there, verify that the ID was entered correctly, that the app supports public issues and that the issue’s acceptance window has not closed. Contact the intermediary or bank while the issue is still open rather than assuming the bid is complete.
Do not submit a second bid simply because the first mandate has not appeared without first checking the intermediary’s instructions. Multiple applications can create confusion over references and available balance. Ask the intermediary how to handle a missing request and retain the original submission details.
The mandate remains pending
Check whether you completed the UPI-PIN authorization and whether the application status has changed from submitted to accepted. A pending state should be resolved before the issue-specific deadline. Preserve screenshots or reference numbers so the intermediary can trace the request.
Also check that the bank account can support the block and that the mandate amount matches the submitted bid. If the app reports an error or the status does not move, contact both the intermediary and the bank promptly, giving them the issue name, application number and mandate reference. General SEBI guidance does not set one universal fix or timing promise for every pending case.
The app or handle is unsupported
A familiar UPI app is not automatically valid for every public issue. Compare the app and handle with SEBI’s current public-issue list at sebi.gov.in and check the bank’s own current support information. The list page records registrations as of March 7, 2025, so do not rely on an old screenshot or remembered handle.
If the app used for the mandate is different from the app used to submit the bid, that is not necessarily a problem. The deciding checks are whether the submission intermediary is permitted, whether the UPI app and handle support public issues and whether the UPI ID belongs to the applicant’s bank account.
The UPI ID or bank account belongs to someone else
Applications using third-party UPI IDs or bank accounts are not considered for allocation under SEBI’s guidance. Correct the details through the intermediary only if its process permits changes and only before the relevant deadline; do not assume a later mandate approval can repair an applicant mismatch.

The account holder, applicant and UPI identity should align. A family member authorizing the mandate from their own account does not turn the application into the named applicant’s application. If you discover an error, ask the intermediary for the permitted correction route instead of trying to solve it by approving a mandate from another account.
The deadline was missed
There is no single regulator cutoff time that applies to every IPO in the general guidance. Once the issue’s stated mandate deadline has passed, ask the intermediary whether any permitted correction or status action remains, but do not expect a late authorization to be treated as timely.
Record the deadline from the official issue instructions at the start, including any separate closing time for the bid and for mandate acceptance. These are operational checkpoints, and the first submission message cannot substitute for an accepted mandate received within the stated window.

The account balance looks unchanged
ASBA blocks money rather than transferring it out immediately. Check the bank account’s blocked or lien amount and the mandate status. A debit is expected only for the amount corresponding to shares ultimately allotted; excess or unsuccessful applications are released after processing.
If neither a block nor a clear rejection appears, compare the bank view with the UPI mandate and intermediary status. Keep the funds available while the application is being traced, and ask the bank or intermediary to confirm the status rather than assuming that an unchanged balance means the application failed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. After you approve the mandate
- Keep the intermediary application number, mandate reference and the issue’s closing and mandate deadlines.
- Monitor the application or exchange status supplied by the intermediary instead of treating the first submission message as final acceptance.
- Leave sufficient funds available until allocation processing is complete, because the authorized block must remain effective.
- After allocation, check the debit for allotted shares and confirm that any excess or unsuccessful portion has been unblocked.
- Compare the final allocation information with the amount debited. A partial allotment should produce a corresponding debit and release the unused portion.
SEBI’s general procedural pages do not provide a universal timetable for every issue’s allocation or release. Use the issue’s offer documents, registrar notices and bank status for the dates that apply to your application. If the expected release or debit is not reflected, use the saved references when contacting the responsible intermediary, registrar or bank.
Broker, bank and UPI app: who does what?
The names used in apps can make the process look like one service, but the responsibilities remain separate. The application intermediary captures the issue selection, applicant category, quantity, price and UPI ID. The sponsor or escrow bank routes the authorization request. Your UPI or bank app displays that request and records your PIN authorization. Banks and intermediaries then participate in the ASBA flow that keeps the amount blocked until allocation.
This division explains why a bank app can be essential even when the bid was placed in a broker app. It also explains why opening a bank’s IPO page is not proof that the bank is an eligible submission channel for every issue. Verify the exact function offered by the provider and use the official issue instructions for any provider-specific steps.
Best Value
A final pre-deadline checklist
- Issue dates, price or band, lot size and mandate cutoff checked against the official offer information.
- Application submitted through a permitted intermediary.
- Applicant’s own UPI ID and linked bank account entered.
- UPI app and handle checked against SEBI’s public-issue list.
- Mandate details reviewed and authorized with the UPI PIN.
- Acceptance status confirmed before the issue-specific deadline.
- Sufficient balance left available for the block.
- Application and mandate references saved for follow-up.
The practical sequence is simple: submit the bid in an eligible intermediary app, approve the separate UPI funds-blocking request in a supported app, then monitor acceptance and allocation. Following those checkpoints prevents the most common error—mistaking bid submission for a completed UPI application.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for an IPO directly from any bank app?
Not automatically. A bank or UPI app may receive and authorize the mandate without being the eligible intermediary that submits the bid. Confirm the provider’s public-issue role and use a registered stockbroker, syndicate member, registrar and transfer agent, or depository participant where required.
Is submitting the IPO form enough if I have not approved the UPI request?
No. Bid submission and UPI mandate authorization are separate steps. The application should be treated as incomplete until the request is approved with your UPI PIN and the acceptance status is confirmed before the issue-specific deadline.

Can I use my spouse’s or parent’s UPI ID for my application?
SEBI guidance says third-party UPI IDs or bank accounts are not considered for allocation. Use a UPI ID linked to the bank account of the person named as the applicant.
What is the UPI IPO application limit?
SEBI’s investor guidance states ₹5 lakh per transaction for retail individual investors. It is a procedural ceiling, not a guarantee of eligibility or allotment. Check the issue’s current category rules and instructions.
Why has my money not been debited after I approved the mandate?
ASBA blocks the application amount instead of transferring it immediately. The debit normally reflects the amount corresponding to shares allotted; excess funds are released, and the block is released if no shares are allotted.
What should I do if the UPI mandate does not appear?
Check that you are viewing the app linked to the submitted UPI ID, confirm that the app and handle support public issues, and verify the issue’s acceptance window. Contact the intermediary or bank promptly with your application details; there is no universal remedy for every issue.

A pending status is not the same as an accepted mandate. Complete the PIN authorization if required and verify the intermediary’s status before the stated deadline. Keep the reference numbers for support.
When will blocked funds be released?
Release timing is issue-specific. If shares are allotted, the applicable amount is debited and excess is released; if there is no allotment, the blocked amount is released after the allocation process. Follow the offer documents, registrar notices and bank status for dates.
The Bottom Line
Use an eligible intermediary to submit the IPO bid, enter the applicant’s own UPI ID, approve the separate mandate in a supported app and confirm acceptance before the issue-specific deadline. ASBA keeps the money blocked until allocation: only the allotted amount is debited, while unused or unsuccessful amounts are released.
