Why AI Website Layouts Break on Mobile and How to Fix Them

AI-generated pages usually fail on mobile for familiar responsive-design reasons. This guide shows how to find the overflowing element, repair rigid CSS, choose content-driven breakpoints, and test reflow and accessibility.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When an AI-generated website looks fine on a laptop but breaks on a phone, the cause is usually ordinary responsive-web behavior—not a mysterious AI-only defect. The page may be using the wrong layout viewport, an element may be wider than the screen, or the layout may have no rules for shrinking, wrapping, or stacking as space narrows.

Fix it in this order: verify the viewport declaration, identify the exact element creating overflow, replace rigid dimensions with flexible sizing, add a content-driven media query where the composition must change, and test at narrow widths, zoom levels, and with keyboard navigation. Do not begin by hiding overflow on the whole page; that can conceal clipped content instead of repairing it.

What is actually breaking?

AI tools can produce valid-looking HTML and CSS that assumes a desktop canvas. A browser on a phone still applies the same layout rules, but the available CSS width is much smaller. Any fixed width, minimum width, intrinsic image size, unbreakable string, or non-wrapping row can then extend beyond the viewport.

The failure is best understood as a chain of browser decisions:

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
  • The browser establishes a layout viewport. If the document does not declare an appropriate mobile viewport, a phone can lay out the page against a much wider virtual width and scale the result down.
  • Each element calculates a used width from its CSS width, padding, borders, minimum size, and content. A single element whose used width exceeds the available space can create horizontal scrolling.
  • Grid and Flexbox can adapt only when tracks and items are allowed to shrink, wrap, or move. A fixed child or an unbreakable item can defeat an otherwise flexible parent.
  • Media queries apply only when the browser sees the expected viewport dimensions. They are for meaningful composition changes, not a substitute for basic fluid sizing.

There is no established statistic showing that a particular percentage of AI-generated sites fail on mobile. The documented mechanisms are the same ones that affect hand-written sites, so diagnose the rendered page rather than assigning a failure rate to the tool that produced it.

Start with a symptom-based diagnosis

Before changing CSS, classify what you see. A page that is uniformly tiny has a different cause from a page with one clipped card.

Symptom Likely mechanism First check
Everything looks like a miniature desktop page Missing or unsuitable viewport declaration Inspect the document head for a device-width viewport meta tag
A horizontal scrollbar appears One element is wider than the viewport Use responsive DevTools and find the widest element
Cards are squeezed or text overlaps Grid tracks, flex items, or children cannot shrink Check fixed widths, min-width values, and wrapping rules
Desktop navigation remains on one line The composition has no narrow-screen state Resize until the navigation stops fitting, then add a breakpoint
Layout looks correct but keyboard focus jumps Visual reordering conflicts with source order Tab through the page and compare focus order with reading order

Record the narrowest width at which the problem first appears. That width is more useful than a device name because it reflects the content’s actual constraint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix the layout viewport first

In the document <head>, use a normal device-width declaration:

<meta name='viewport' content='width=device-width, initial-scale=1'>

The declaration tells a mobile browser to use the device’s CSS width for layout and to start at a one-to-one initial scale. Without it, mobile browsers may use a desktop-like virtual viewport—MDN describes a value around 980 CSS pixels as a common example—and then scale the finished page down. A narrow-screen media query may not activate because the browser believes the layout is wide enough.

Check the declaration in the rendered document

  1. Open the page source or the Elements panel and select the document’s <head>.
  2. Confirm there is one viewport meta tag and that its content includes width=device-width and initial-scale=1.
  3. Reload with the browser’s responsive design mode enabled. A page that was merely scaled down should now use the device-width media-query range.
  4. Test normal pinch zoom. Do not add user-scalable=no, maximum-scale=1, or similar restrictions just to make the design look stable. MDN recommends preserving default zoom behavior for accessibility and user experience.

The viewport declaration cannot repair an oversized image or a fixed-width card. It only ensures that the browser is evaluating responsive rules against the correct layout width.

Find the element causing horizontal overflow

Do not start with body { overflow-x: hidden; }. That rule can make the scrollbar disappear while leaving buttons, text, or media clipped off-screen. Find and repair the source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use responsive browser tools

  1. Open the browser’s responsive design or device toolbar and set a narrow width.
  2. Scroll horizontally, if possible, and note which region extends beyond the viewport.
  3. Inspect the suspected element. Compare its computed width and minimum width with the viewport and its parent’s content box.
  4. Temporarily apply an outline to likely descendants in DevTools. The element whose outline crosses the right edge is usually the immediate source.
  5. Check ancestors as well. A child can be fluid while a parent has a fixed width or padding that makes the whole subtree too wide.

Common sources and targeted repairs

Source Why it overflows Targeted repair
Fixed-width container A value such as width: 1200px remains larger than a phone Use a fluid width with a sensible max-width and horizontal padding
Flex child The item’s automatic minimum size prevents it from shrinking Apply min-width: 0 to the shrinkable flex child and allow wrapping where appropriate
Grid track A fixed track or long minimum contribution forces the grid wider Use flexible tracks such as minmax(0, 1fr) and let items fit the track
Image, video, or embedded frame Intrinsic dimensions exceed the containing block Constrain the media to its container; for ordinary images use max-width: 100%; height: auto
Long URL, code sample, or product identifier There is no legal break point Choose an intentional wrapping or internal-scrolling policy, such as overflow-wrap: anywhere for text that may break
Table or data grid Columns require more width than the page can provide Reconsider the mobile presentation: allow a component-level scroll region, reduce columns, or provide a stacked representation
Negative margin or oversized decoration Positioned artwork extends beyond the layout box Reduce the decoration at narrow widths or contain it without clipping meaningful content

Constrain media without distorting it

img, video, svg, iframe {
  max-width: 100%;
}

img, video {
  height: auto;
}

The max-width rule lets an image shrink to the available width without making a naturally smaller image grow. For an iframe or other embedded content, also check the embed’s internal fixed dimensions and whether its provider offers a responsive mode.

Build a fluid foundation before adding breakpoints

Responsive behavior starts with normal document flow. Let text form a single readable column, let blocks take the width available to them, and add columns only when the content has room.

Use fluid containers

.page-shell {
  width: min(100% - 2rem, 72rem);
  margin-inline: auto;
}

.section {
  padding-block: 1.5rem;
}

The subtraction leaves a small gutter on narrow screens while the maximum width prevents uncomfortably long lines on wide screens. If an AI-generated stylesheet contains several competing fixed widths, remove the unnecessary ones instead of layering overrides indefinitely.

Let Flexbox items shrink or wrap

.toolbar {
  display: flex;
  flex-wrap: wrap;
  gap: 0.75rem;
}

.toolbar__main {
  flex: 1 1 16rem;
  min-width: 0;
}

.toolbar__actions {
  flex: 0 1 auto;
}

flex-wrap: wrap creates another line when the row no longer fits. min-width: 0 removes the automatic minimum that can keep a flex child wider than its track. Use flex values to express how items should share spare space instead of assigning every item a pixel width.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Grid for columns that can collapse

.feature-list {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fit, minmax(min(100%, 16rem), 1fr));
  gap: 1rem;
}

.content-layout {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: minmax(0, 2fr) minmax(14rem, 1fr);
  gap: 2rem;
}

The first pattern creates as many tracks as fit and drops to one column when they do not. The second protects the main column from an oversized minimum contribution. If the sidebar should move below the article, that is a composition change and belongs in a media query.

Control text and intrinsic content

Long words, URLs, identifiers, and preformatted code can establish a minimum width that surprises the parent layout. Use wrapping only where breaking the token is acceptable. For code that must remain on one line, give the code block its own horizontal scrolling region rather than allowing the entire page to scroll.

.code-panel {
  max-width: 100%;
  overflow-x: auto;
}

.prose {
  overflow-wrap: anywhere;
}

Do not apply aggressive word breaking to every language or brand name by default; it can make ordinary text difficult to read. Choose the rule according to the content’s meaning.

Add media queries when the composition must change

A media query is appropriate when a layout decision cannot be expressed by fluid sizing alone: a sidebar needs to move below the article, a navigation control needs a different presentation, or a multi-column card group becomes too narrow to scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start mobile-first

.content-layout {
  display: block;
}

@media (min-width: 48rem) {
  .content-layout {
    display: grid;
    grid-template-columns: minmax(0, 2fr) minmax(14rem, 1fr);
    gap: 2rem;
  }
}

The base rule is the narrow presentation: a normal-flow single column. The enhanced rule adds columns when there is enough space. This reduces the number of exceptions and gives the browser a usable layout even if a later rule fails to load.

Choose a breakpoint from the content

  1. Resize the page slowly from narrow to wide.
  2. Note the first point at which navigation wraps awkwardly, cards become too narrow, or line lengths and controls become uncomfortable.
  3. Place the media query near that transition, then test several widths on both sides.
  4. Repeat for every genuinely different composition, keeping the total number of breakpoints small enough to maintain.

Do not choose a breakpoint solely because a particular phone model is popular. MDN describes media queries in terms of viewport dimensions and device features; the content’s fit is the practical design signal.

Use feature queries and container-aware rules when appropriate

If a component appears in several contexts, a viewport breakpoint may not describe its available space. In that case, a component-level approach such as a container query can be more stable, provided the project’s browser support target allows it. The same principle applies: change the composition when the component’s content no longer fits, not because a device name was listed in a template.

Protect reading order and keyboard navigation

Responsive CSS can change where an item appears visually without changing where it occurs in the HTML. Grid placement, Flexbox order, and reverse-direction settings are useful, but they can create a mismatch between what a sighted user sees and the sequence followed by a screen reader or keyboard user.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the DOM sequence logical

Write the source in the order a reader should encounter it: heading, introductory context, primary content, related content, and actions. Then use layout rules to create columns or spacing. If the mobile order and desktop order are fundamentally different, reconsider the component structure instead of relying on many visual reordering declarations.

Test the focus sequence

  1. At a narrow width, press Tab from the top of the page.
  2. Confirm focus moves through controls in the same order as the visible reading path.
  3. Switch to the wider layout and repeat.
  4. Check that a moved sidebar, menu, or action group does not receive focus before the content that introduces it.

W3C/WAI warns that visual placement can become disconnected from keyboard navigation and source-code order. A visually attractive arrangement is not a successful fix if it makes the interaction sequence confusing.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Use an end-to-end repair sequence

  1. Reproduce the failure. Open responsive design tools, set a narrow width, and record whether the page is scaled down, clipped, or horizontally scrollable.
  2. Verify the viewport. Confirm the device-width meta tag and remove zoom-restricting settings.
  3. Locate the overflow. Identify the first element whose border or background extends beyond the viewport. Inspect computed width, padding, borders, min-width, fixed dimensions, and intrinsic content.
  4. Repair the source. Remove unnecessary fixed widths, constrain media, set shrinkable flex children to min-width: 0, use flexible grid tracks, and decide how long strings or tables should behave.
  5. Change the composition only when needed. Add a media query at the width where the content stops fitting. Stack, wrap, or move the region deliberately.
  6. Check order and controls. Verify source order, visible headings, tap targets, and keyboard focus in every layout state.
  7. Recheck intermediate widths. A layout that works at 320 CSS pixels and a wide desktop width can still fail between them. Drag the viewport through the transition rather than testing only two presets.
  8. Test zoom and reflow. Increase text or page zoom and make sure content remains available without accidental page-level horizontal scrolling.

Use the 320 CSS pixel reflow target correctly

W3C/WAI Technique C32 states: “The objective of this technique is to be able to present content without introducing a horizontal scroll bar at a width equivalent to 320 CSS pixels, or a vertical scroll bar at a height equivalent to 256 CSS pixels for text intended to scroll horizontally.”

Treat this as an accessibility-oriented check for applicable content, not as a claim that every interface must look identical at that exact size. Some content—such as a large data table, a diagram, or code that must preserve line structure—may need a component-level scrolling treatment or an alternate representation. W3C techniques are examples of ways to meet WCAG; they are not, by themselves, the only route to conformance.

Compare possible fixes before choosing one

Approach Scope of change Content behavior Accessibility and maintenance considerations
Fluid sizing in the existing layout Small; removes rigid dimensions Elements shrink, wrap, or fill available space Usually preserves source order and needs fewer exceptions
Grid or Flexbox reflow Moderate; changes how a region distributes space Items wrap, form flexible tracks, or share a row Check automatic minimum sizes and the resulting focus path
Breakpoint composition change Moderate to large; introduces a distinct narrow layout Columns stack, navigation changes form, or controls move Choose the breakpoint from content fit and test both sides
Component-level scrolling Localized; keeps an inherently wide object intact Only the table, code block, or diagram scrolls Provide a visible cue and avoid making the whole document scroll horizontally
Global overflow hiding Superficially small Content is clipped or made unreachable Can conceal defects and harm zoom, keyboard, and touch use; reserve only for a proven decorative edge

No single CSS technique is universally best. Select the option that fits the content, intended reading order, and maintenance constraints.

Review AI-generated code before accepting it

An AI assistant can produce a plausible page quickly, but generated CSS often contains duplicated overrides, device-specific breakpoints, or fixed values copied from a desktop mockup. A short review catches the expensive problems before they spread through every component.

Ask for explanations, not just another patch

When requesting a correction, provide the viewport width, the overflowing selector, and the intended reading order. Ask the assistant to explain which rule creates the minimum width, why a breakpoint is needed, and how keyboard order is preserved. A request such as “make it responsive” is too vague to constrain the output.

Inspect generated changes

  • Look for new global overflow-x: hidden rules that mask the symptom.
  • Check whether a fixed width was replaced with another fixed width rather than a fluid constraint.
  • Verify that every new media query corresponds to a content transition.
  • Ensure image and embed rules preserve aspect ratio and do not stretch media.
  • Compare the HTML source order before and after visual reordering.
  • Delete obsolete overrides after the flexible rule works; accumulated patches make the next breakpoint harder to reason about.

Common attempted fixes that fail

Hiding overflow on the body

This removes the visible scrollbar but can cut off a call-to-action, form field, or focus ring. Repair the widest descendant, then use a local scroll container only for content that is intentionally wider.

Adding many phone-specific breakpoints

Breakpoints tied to named devices become brittle as screen sizes and orientations vary. A content-driven breakpoint and flexible base rules usually cover more widths with less code.

Making every element 100 percent wide

width: 100% does not account for padding, borders, minimum widths, or intrinsic children. Use box-sizing: border-box where appropriate, inspect the computed box, and fix the child that establishes the larger minimum.

Reversing columns without checking source order

flex-direction: row-reverse, column-reverse, and high Grid placement values can make the visual arrangement look right while keyboard and assistive-technology order remains different. Keep the markup meaningful and test focus after every reordering change.

A compact production checklist

  • The document head includes a device-width viewport declaration with an initial scale of one.
  • Default zoom remains available; no restrictive user-scaling setting was added.
  • No fixed-width container, image, embed, table, or long token extends beyond the intended region.
  • Flex children that should shrink have an appropriate minimum width, and rows can wrap when needed.
  • Grid tracks use flexible minimums and collapse or stack when the content requires it.
  • Media queries mark real composition changes and are chosen from content fit.
  • The narrow layout starts with readable normal flow instead of a shrunken desktop canvas.
  • Source order, visible reading order, and keyboard focus order agree.
  • The page has been checked at narrow, intermediate, and wide widths, including zoom.
  • At a width equivalent to 320 CSS pixels, applicable content does not force page-level horizontal scrolling.

Once these checks pass, the page is responsive for the reasons that matter: the browser has the correct viewport, content can fit or intentionally scroll within its own component, and layout changes happen when the design—not a device label—requires them.
