Neither a matching model nor a successful serial lookup, by itself, proves that the physical product is genuine: Apple describes its coverage checker as a way to view coverage and benefits, not as an authentication test.
1. Match the model number to Apple’s guide
Apple lists AirPods model numbers and the years they were introduced. Find the model number in your paired device’s settings or on the product, then compare it with Apple’s current AirPods identification guide. Use the live page for the exact model names and identifiers, since Apple’s lineup can change.

- AirPods and AirPods Pro: Look on the underside of each earbud.
- AirPods Max: Look behind the cushion on the left ear cup.
- Settings: Open the AirPods’ device information. Apple also documents model information in the paired device’s settings.
If the number does not match Apple’s model reference, or the listed model does not fit the product in front of you, treat that as a reason to investigate. A match identifies a model number; it does not independently authenticate the item.

2. Locate the serial number
Apple’s serial-number instructions explain where to find the number in settings and on the hardware. You can also find model name, serial number, and firmware version in device settings, as described in the AirPods user guide.

- AirPods and AirPods Pro: Check the inside of the charging-case lid. Apple directs customers seeking service to use the primary serial printed there. Some individual earbuds also have their own serial numbers; use the case-lid number as the service serial rather than treating an earbud’s individual number as a substitute.
- AirPods Max: Remove the left magnetic ear cushion to find the serial number.
- Other records: The original packaging, receipt, or invoice may also show a serial number.
3. Use Apple’s coverage checker for coverage—not authentication
Apple’s coverage checker asks for a serial number to show device coverage and benefits. That can help answer coverage or AppleCare questions, but Apple does not describe a successful lookup as proof that the physical AirPods are genuine.
So, do not treat a serial number that returns a result as a pass/fail authenticity test. Use it for the coverage information Apple says it provides, and consider any disagreement between the number, product, or Apple’s model information a reason to ask Apple for help.

4. Ask Apple if the details still do not add up
For help identifying a model or finding support options, visit Apple AirPods Support. If the product needs attention, Apple’s service and repair page provides troubleshooting and repair or replacement routes. Service options can vary by location and parts availability.
If you suspect the product is counterfeit or a knockoff, Apple provides an official counterfeit reporting form.

What the checks can—and cannot—tell you
Apple’s official identification information supports checking model numbers, locating serial numbers, and finding coverage or service help. It does not provide a complete physical checklist or a single consumer test that conclusively authenticates every pair. Treat a model mismatch as a warning to investigate, not as a complete diagnosis; likewise, no single matching number or lookup should be treated as a guarantee.
