The barcode is the machine-readable pattern; the GTIN is the number it represents. In the common UPC/EAN formats, the symbol ordinarily carries the GTIN—not the store’s price.
Barcode, GTIN, UPC and EAN: the difference
GS1 defines barcodes as symbols that can be scanned electronically with laser or image-based technology. The symbol is the carrier; the data encoded in it identifies a product or may include other details.

- Barcode: The machine-readable symbol, such as UPC-A, EAN-13, DataBar, DataMatrix or a QR Code.
- GTIN: The product identifier represented by the symbol. The digits printed beneath many retail barcodes are the human-readable form of that identifier.
- UPC and EAN: Familiar names associated with GTIN formats and the retail symbol family. GTIN-12 is commonly called UPC and is used mostly in North America; GTIN-13 is commonly called EAN or JAN and is used mostly in Europe and elsewhere. GTIN-8 is used for smaller items. GS1’s EAN/UPC guidance explains the family and its formats.
So, a UPC is not a synonym for every barcode. It is one familiar format within a broader system.
What happens when a cashier scans one?
- A laser or image-based scanner reads the symbol’s pattern.
- The checkout system captures the encoded GTIN.
- The point-of-sale (POS) system matches that identifier to the retailer’s product record, which supplies the item information and price used for the transaction.
For ordinary EAN/UPC symbols, the encoded data is the GTIN. The store’s system looks up the price; the barcode pattern itself does not inherently contain the store’s current price. Promotions, location-specific pricing and other transaction details are handled by the retailer’s records and checkout system.

Common retail barcode formats
GS1 says EAN/UPC should be the first choice for a trade item scanned at retail POS. Other formats serve different needs, and compatibility depends on the scanning and POS systems in use.
| Format | Typical role | What it can represent |
|---|---|---|
| UPC-A / EAN-13 | Common retail checkout symbols | A GTIN in the EAN/UPC family |
| UPC-E / EAN-8 | Compact retail symbol forms | Associated with GTIN-12 / GTIN-8 use; EAN-8 is used for smaller items |
| GS1 DataBar | Retail, including fresh foods | Some forms can carry attributes such as weight, batch or expiry information |
| GS1 DataMatrix / QR Code with GS1 Digital Link | Two-dimensional retail options | GTIN plus additional data; Digital Link can connect to online product information |
| GS1-128 / ITF-14 | More often distribution and logistics | Versatile linear formats used in supply chains rather than the default retail POS choice |
The right symbol depends on the scanning environment, the information needed, scanner compatibility and available package space. GS1’s 2D barcode guidance describes retail options and their uses.

Why some retail barcodes are moving to 2D
A traditional linear barcode generally identifies the product with a GTIN. A GS1-compliant two-dimensional symbol can also encode attributes such as a batch or lot number, serial number or expiration date. That added information may support uses beyond basic item lookup, but only if the retailer’s hardware and software can scan, process, store and use it.
GS1’s retail POS implementation guideline, version 1.1.0, was listed as current in its repository when last modified on 2025-12-22. It describes a voluntary transition toward GS1-compliant 2D symbols, not a completed universal replacement. Linear symbols are expected to coexist during the transition; GS1 says products using retail 2D barcodes need a linear POS barcode until the stated scanning-capability threshold is met. Retailers and suppliers therefore need to coordinate symbol use with actual checkout capabilities.
