To check an AirPods battery, open the case or remove the earbuds, then view them in Bluetooth settings on iPhone or iPad, or in Control Center on Mac. To find a missing pair, open Find My, select Devices, and choose your AirPods. The map, nearby directions, and sound options depend on the model and whether the earbuds can connect.
How do I check my AirPods battery?
On iPhone or iPad

Open Settings > Bluetooth, find your AirPods, and tap the Info button beside their name. The charge information appears when they are connected. Apple’s [AirPods charge instructions] explain the available battery indicators.

Choose Control Center > Sound from the menu bar and select your AirPods to see their charge.
Read the case status light
The light gives a broad status rather than a percentage. Green means fully charged; amber means less than one full charge remains. When the earbuds are inside as you open the lid, the light indicates their charge. With the earbuds removed, it indicates the case charge. If no light appears, the AirPods may need charging. Check the case’s connector before choosing a cable: cases use Lightning or USB-C depending on the model, and only some cases support wireless charging.

Low-battery alerts
Apple says iPhone and iPad alerts appear when charge reaches 20%, 10%, and 5%. The AirPods also play a tone at 10% and again shortly before they turn off.

Open Find My, tap Devices, and select your AirPods. If prompted because the earbuds are separated, choose the left or right AirPod.

Check the map. If Find Nearby is offered, follow its on-screen directions. Otherwise, use Play Sound when the AirPods are reachable. Apple’s [lost AirPods instructions] describe these options.

If the AirPods are still missing and the model supports it, turn on Lost Mode and add contact information.

Find My has to be enabled before the loss. The AirPods must also have been paired with an iPhone or iPad signed in to the Apple Account you use to view them. Lost Mode and offline finding require the Find My network to have been enabled in advance; the network may not be available in some countries or regions.
Can I find my AirPods if they’re offline?
Sometimes Find My can show a last known location, but an offline map pin is not necessarily current. If the AirPods are out of range or need charge, the app may show their last known location, Offline, or No location found. Play Sound and nearby directions may not work until they reconnect. Apple says a paired device can receive a notification if they come online again.

For supported models with Find My network enabled, Apple’s current user guide says they can remain locatable for up to 24 hours after last connecting, even when they are not nearby. The guide lists AirPods 3, AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max among supported models. Availability and features vary by model and region.
Can I find just one AirPod?
Yes, if Find My has a location for it. When separated, most models show only one AirPod’s location at a time: find that earbud, put it back in its case, then refresh Find My to locate the other. AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3 can show each AirPod and the case separately on the map, according to Apple’s current guide.
Which Find My features depend on the model?
Separate case location, case sounds, Lost Mode options, and precise nearby finding are not available on every model. Apple’s guide says AirPods Pro 2 and Pro 3 can show direction and distance for nearby finding when used with a UWB-capable iPhone. Check the guide for your exact AirPods model before relying on a particular feature.
What if I can’t recover the AirPods?
Apple offers replacement AirPods or charging cases for missing pieces. Identify the exact model before choosing a replacement so the earbud or case matches your set. If you need a charging cable instead, check whether the case has a Lightning or USB-C port first; a cable can charge the case but cannot help locate it.
