To check the image WhatsApp is likely to show, inspect the exact page you plan to share for a valid, page-specific og:image tag, then paste that same public URL into WhatsApp and inspect the proposed preview before sending. An HTML checker can help diagnose metadata, but only the WhatsApp preview confirms what your sending client currently displays.
What WhatsApp uses to build a link preview
The preview depends on metadata provided by the destination website. Meta’s WhatsApp developer guidance identifies four relevant Open Graph fields: og:title, og:description, og:url and og:image. The tags belong in the page’s HTML <head>, and the head markup should appear within the first 300 KB of the HTML. The title, description and canonical URL should be non-empty.

The image tag should contain an absolute URL, such as https://example.com/images/article-preview.jpg, rather than a relative path such as /images/article-preview.jpg. Meta’s guidance, mirrored in documentation by ChatArchitect, says the image should be under 600 KB, at least 300 pixels wide, and have a width-to-height ratio of 4:1 or less.

Check the page’s metadata
1. Use the exact public URL
Copy the precise URL you intend to send, including its path and any meaningful query string. Open it in a private browser window or another session where you are not logged in. If the page requires authentication, redirects somewhere unexpected, or is unavailable to visitors, its preview may not represent the page you intended to share.

2. Inspect the returned HTML
Open the page source in your browser (often available by right-clicking and choosing View Page Source) and search for og:title, og:description, og:url and og:image. Check that the tags are inside <head>, are present in the returned HTML rather than only appearing after client-side JavaScript runs, and occur early enough in the document.
A minimal example looks like this; replace every example value with information and an image URL for the page being shared:

Open the full og:image URL directly. It should resolve to the intended image without a login or an error, and the published guidance above gives the size and dimension limits to check. Also confirm that the image suits this particular page: a site-wide default image can be valid technically but wrong for an article or product page.

- Open the WhatsApp chat where you plan to share the link.
- Paste the exact public URL into the message field and wait for the preview card to appear.
- Check the displayed image, title and description against the page you meant to share. If the card is wrong, do not assume the recipient will see a corrected version; fix or investigate the metadata first.
- If you are sending through a particular integration or workflow, verify the received result in that integration as well. Valid page metadata alone does not establish that every message type or client will display a card identically.
Use a checker as a diagnostic, not a guarantee
An independent link-preview checker can show which tags it reads and help identify missing or malformed values. It is useful for debugging, but it is not an official WhatsApp debugger and its rendering is not proof that every WhatsApp client will show the same card. WhaTools describes a preview-checking feature and explicitly says it is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta. Confirm the result in the WhatsApp client you will use.

Why isn’t my WhatsApp link preview showing?
- The sender has disabled previews. WhatsApp Help Center gives the path on Android as Settings > Privacy > Advanced > Disable link previews. Menu wording can vary by client version. This setting affects previews on links the sender sends, not previews they receive.
- The tags are absent or not in the returned HTML. Add the Open Graph values to the page’s server-returned head and check the source again. Metadata added only after JavaScript runs may not be present in the HTML a preview fetcher reads.
- The image URL is not usable. Use an absolute, publicly fetchable image URL and check the file against the published size and dimension guidance.
- You checked a different URL. Test the exact destination URL, not just the homepage, a staging page or a similar page on the same site.
- An earlier result may be cached. Retest after updating the page, but do not rely on a particular waiting period or a universal cache-clearing procedure: no official WhatsApp cache duration or dependable reset method is established here.
Why is the wrong image showing?
First compare the exact page’s og:image value with the image you intended to use. Then open that image URL directly and confirm it returns the correct, accessible file. If the metadata and file are correct but WhatsApp still displays an older or different image, cached state may be involved; the available official guidance does not establish when that state expires or a guaranteed way to clear it. Check the exact URL again in WhatsApp after the page update rather than assuming a checker’s result controls WhatsApp’s display.
