How to choose a side hustle
Start with what your audience already values and what you can deliver consistently. A useful comparison is not “which pays the most?”—there is no verified universal earnings ranking—but what each model asks you to do, how it earns, and what it depends on.

1. Use platform monetization when you meet the requirements
YouTube offers several distinct monetization features: watch-page and Shorts ads, YouTube Premium revenue, Shopping, channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks. They are not all automatically unlocked by joining the YouTube Partner Program (YPP); each feature can have additional conditions, and availability can depend on geography and legal eligibility. YouTube Help’s published baseline application routes, accessed in 2026, are either 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the previous 90 days. These are YouTube’s thresholds, not a general rule for other platforms or a promise of revenue. YPP also requires policy compliance, a supported country or region, no active Community Guidelines strikes, two-step verification, access to advanced features, and an AdSense for YouTube account. Confirm the live requirements before planning around them, since platform rules can change.
Choose a feature that fits how viewers use your content. Ads and Premium revenue are tied to eligible viewing; memberships and fan-funding features rely on viewers choosing to pay or participate; Shopping connects content with products. Treat each as a separate route with its own qualification and audience fit, rather than assuming one approval unlocks everything.

2. Recommend products through affiliate links or a storefront
Affiliate marketing can suit creators whose viewers ask what they use, or whose tutorials naturally involve particular products. Amazon’s Influencer Program says creators may apply using a qualifying TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, or Facebook account. The program describes a storefront, themed Idea Lists, photo and video content, affiliate links, and shoppable content. Earnings depend on qualifying purchases; simply posting a link does not itself earn a commission.
Make recommendations useful and specific: explain what a product does in your workflow, who it may suit, and any limitation you know. Do not buy equipment solely to promote it or treat acceptance as automatic. 3. Pursue brand partnerships without confusing them with ad revenue
A sponsorship is a direct commercial arrangement around content, while platform ad revenue is paid through a platform’s monetization system. Brand work may also involve licensing content or allowing paid amplification, but those arrangements need clearly agreed scope, usage, duration, and deliverables. No typical deal rate or guaranteed route to a partnership is established here.
YouTube announced creator-brand partnership tools on September 23, 2026, including ways to share brand-partner access and paid-promotion capabilities. The same announcement said Amazon product tagging, then available in the United States, was planned to expand to India and Brazil in the coming weeks and to more countries before year end. That is a dated rollout statement, not confirmation of current availability: check the current YouTube announcement and the features visible to your account and market.

For any partnership, assess whether the product fits your audience and whether the brief gives you enough room to make accurate content. Separate sponsored claims from your independent opinion, and agree in writing on what is being made and how the brand may use it.
4. Sell a service based on your creator skills
A service can turn a skill you use for your own channel into client work. Examples include editing, thumbnail or graphic design, writing, production assistance, and consulting. Unlike affiliate income, this is primarily payment for labor and expertise; it does not require a large audience, but it does require finding a buyer and delivering the agreed work.
- Choose a narrow deliverable. Define the result, such as editing a specified video or reviewing a channel’s publishing workflow.
- Show relevant samples. Use work you have permission to share and explain your contribution accurately.
- Set scope before starting. Agree on deliverables, revisions, deadlines, rights, and payment terms with the client.
- Track the real workload. Include communication and revisions when deciding whether a project is worthwhile for you.
There is no single verified standard rate for these services. Rates and demand depend on the work, buyer, market, and agreement, so do not base a plan on an assumed creator-wide average.

5. Package your knowledge as a digital product or paid access
If viewers repeatedly ask for a repeatable resource, consider a template, guide, course, or other digital product. If they value continuing access, a paid membership or community may fit better. These models monetize knowledge or ongoing access rather than a client’s purchase of your time, but they still involve work: creating the offer, explaining its value, handling support, and keeping any ongoing promise.
Keep the offer tied to a real audience need. A one-off resource has a different maintenance burden from an ongoing community; do not promise continuing access or updates unless you can sustain them. The specific fees and terms of outside membership platforms are not established here, so check a provider’s current terms before choosing one.
6. Treat a 24/7 YouTube stream as a format, not an income guarantee
Some creators use playlists or prerecorded video in a continuous YouTube live stream as one way to publish. That is a distribution format, not a monetization shortcut: revenue still depends on applicable YouTube eligibility, feature access, policy compliance, audience response, and the rights to every piece of content. A stream being live continuously does not by itself guarantee views or earnings.
If you use prerecorded material, make sure you have the necessary rights and that the channel complies with YouTube’s monetization and copyright rules. Reused or unlicensed material can create policy and rights problems; a continuous loop does not change those obligations.

More than one income route can reduce reliance on a single platform or buyer, but adding offers also adds work. A practical sequence is to select one route that matches your existing content, test whether viewers or clients respond, and keep only commitments you can fulfill. For example, a tutorial creator might first make relevant product recommendations, then offer a clearly scoped editing or consulting service if clients ask for help. That is a planning example, not a claim about likely earnings.
