Before paying for a used PS5 Pro, see it start up, inspect it in person, test PlayStation service access with the seller present, and match every included item to the listing. Ask the seller to deactivate the console and erase their data before handover. A successful check reduces risk; it cannot guarantee the console will never fail later.
1. Arrange a live test before you meet
Check the seller’s reputation and feedback, then ask for a short video of the actual console powering on and reaching the home screen. Ask them to show a stable picture, an internet connection where relevant, and the ports, buttons, and disc drive if the unit has one. PlayStation’s used-product buying guide specifically recommends asking for video proof and checking these functions.

Request a written list of everything included and compare it with the listing. Ask whether the console can sign in to PlayStation services and whether the seller will deactivate it and remove their access before the sale. A video is a useful first screen, but it cannot replace checking the console yourself.
2. Inspect the console and its identity markings
Examine the exterior and covers for cracks, dents, impact marks, liquid residue, unusual gaps, and heavy dust. Look for signs of overheating or damage. PlayStation recommends an in-person inspection because some physical problems may not be apparent in a video.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
- Check that the serial number is present and legible.
- Look for signs that warranty seals have been broken.
- Do not open or disassemble the console for a casual purchase check. If it appears to need internal service, treat it as a repair risk or walk away.
PlayStation’s buying guide flags missing serial numbers and broken seals as inspection concerns. Its serial and model number guide explains where to find those markings.
3. Test power, picture, sound, and controls
Connect the PS5 Pro to a display and use it for several minutes. Check for a stable image and sound, and navigate the system normally. Watch for flickering, unexpected shutdowns, repeated error messages, or abnormal heat or noise. PlayStation’s PS5 Pro troubleshooting guidance covers overheating, image flickering, audio, disc, and TV-connection problems; these are symptoms to notice, not a comprehensive diagnostic test.
Test the console buttons and front and rear ports that you can reasonably access. Pair and operate the controller included in the deal; check that it charges if a charging cable is included. Confirm the controller and other items match what the seller advertised.

Insert a known-good game or supported video disc and check that the console recognizes it and loads. If it fails, try a different game, Blu-ray, or DVD before concluding the drive is faulty. PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs, so those are not valid test media. See PlayStation’s PS5 Pro disc troubleshooting guidance for further checks.
4. Verify PlayStation service access and account state
With the seller present, connect the console to the internet and check that it can access PlayStation services. A successful network connection by itself is not enough: PlayStation warns that a console reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from its services. Test service access directly rather than assuming the console is clear because it reaches the internet.
Have the seller deactivate the console and confirm they will no longer have access to it. Do not rely on an existing profile remaining usable; the purchase should transfer the console, not the seller’s account. If the seller refuses a live service check or will not deactivate it, treat that as unresolved risk rather than a pass. PlayStation’s used-product buying guide advises buyers to ensure the seller has deactivated a console and no longer has access.

Agree on the reset before handover
Ask the seller to back up anything they need and reset the console for transfer before you take it. PlayStation’s PS5 reset instructions distinguish a data-erasing reset from Restore Default Settings: restoring default settings changes settings but does not delete user or game data. Resetting deletes that data and cannot be undone. Make sure the seller understands the difference and has completed any needed backup first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Match accessories to the actual listing
There is no single universal used PS5 Pro bundle inventory established by PlayStation’s buying guide. Check what this seller promised rather than assuming every regional package includes the same items. Use the listing as your checklist and physically verify each item:
- PS5 Pro console and any controller or controllers promised
- Stand or base, if promised
- Power lead, HDMI cable, and USB charging or data cable, if listed
- Retail packaging, if promised
- Any separately advertised extras
Check that cables fit securely and that promised accessories are present and undamaged. Photograph the serial number and included items for your records, but avoid unnecessarily exposing personal account information.
6. Settle return and warranty terms before paying
Confirm the seller’s return window and what recourse you have if a fault appears after purchase. PlayStation’s US buying guidance says third-party used products may not be covered by warranty; its US/Canada PS5 limited-warranty page states a one-year warranty for the original purchaser. The warranty page also excludes products whose serial number has been altered, defaced, or removed. These terms are region-specific, and the cited warranty is for the original purchaser, so ask for proof of purchase and check local terms rather than assuming coverage transfers to you.
PlayStation says certified refurbished PlayStation products include warranty, but that is distinct from an ordinary third-party used sale. Check the precise seller, region, and offer terms before relying on coverage.
What a pre-purchase check can and cannot establish
A live inspection can reveal current faults and unresolved account or service issues, but it cannot prove the console will never fail later. If a feature cannot be tested, record it as unknown rather than treating it as a pass. PlayStation notes its used-product buying guidance is not comprehensive; bundle contents, return rights, warranty transferability, and service availability depend on the offer and region.
