The better choice depends on your console, the game’s online requirements, your local rules, and whether you value a disc-based access path or the convenience of a download. Sony has also announced that new PlayStation games will be digital-only starting January 2028, while games released or scheduled for disc release before then are not affected by that plan.
What do you get when you buy a digital PlayStation game?
For US customers, Sony’s terms distinguish everyday purchase language from legal ownership. They state that words such as “purchase” or “own” do not transfer ownership of the content or its intellectual property. Sony generally describes the user’s rights as a personal, limited, non-transferable license, subject to applicable law and product-specific terms. Sony’s US Terms of Service also restrict sale or transfer except where permitted.

Access to Store purchases is associated with the account that bought them. Sony’s US PlayStation Network terms warn that closing or deleting that account may result in losing access to purchased content. This does not mean every account closure or service change automatically erases every game: access can depend on account status, console configuration, the particular content, its terms, and local law. Sony’s additional software and product-specific terms may also apply.
Does a physical disc mean you own the game outright?
A disc gives you a physical copy and a way to access a game on compatible hardware with a disc drive. It is a different access path from a license tied to a Store account, but it is not a blanket promise that every part of the game is on the disc, that every feature works offline, or that the copy can always be transferred or resold. Game design, publisher terms, local law, and the console still matter.

Sony’s US terms make a narrow offline-access point: if a console is suspended, disc games that run without connecting to Sony’s services may still be playable. That does not establish offline behavior for every title. A game may rely on online services, publisher authentication, updates, downloads, or other external components. Check the individual game’s requirements if offline access matters to you. Sony’s suspension guidance and US service terms describe the limits.
Can you resell or lend PlayStation games?
Do not assume a disc automatically gives you an unrestricted resale right. Sony’s European Software Usage Terms, dated January 2023, say users must not resell disc-based or digital games unless Sony—and, where relevant, the publisher—expressly authorizes it. That is Sony’s stated contractual language for that region and date, not a rule established here for every country or a conclusion about enforceability everywhere.

In practice, whether a physical game can be sold and what it might fetch depend on applicable local law, the relevant platform and publisher terms, the game, the disc’s condition, demand, and retailer or marketplace policies. The available sources do not establish a universal right to resell or an average resale value. Digital purchases, meanwhile, are generally non-transferable under the cited US terms, subject to applicable local law.

How does your PS5 affect the choice?
A disc is useful only if your console can read it. Sony describes the PS5 Digital Edition as disc-free. For the PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 model group, Sony lists a separate detachable disc drive; compatibility is model-specific, so check your exact console before buying a drive or a disc game.

- Take advantage of multidirectional 3D Audio; hear enemies approaching from any direction. (3D audio with stereo headphones (analog or USB))
- Bask in the beautiful worlds you travel through, brought to life by precise art direction and arresting attention to detail.
- Switch between full 4K resolution at a targeted 30 frames per second, or dynamic resolution upscaled to 4K at a targeted 60fps. (4K resolution requires a compatible 4K TV or display)
What happens if you want a refund?
Return rights depend on both region and purchase channel. For eligible physical merchandise bought from PlayStation Direct in the US, Sony says customers have 30 days from shipment to initiate a refund-eligible return. Its policy requires disc games to be unopened, with security seals intact, to count as being in original condition. This is a PlayStation Direct policy, not a rule for every retailer. Read the PlayStation Direct US returns policy and check the policy of the seller you used.
Digital cancellation rules also vary by region. Sony’s regional terms give an EEA example: buyers generally have a 14-day cancellation period, but agreeing to immediate delivery can limit that right. Sony says digital content generally cannot be cancelled once downloading or streaming has started, subject to faults and other rights under applicable law. Do not treat this EEA example as the rule in every country. Sony’s regional cancellation terms explain the conditions.

Will new PlayStation games still come on disc?
Sony announced on July 1, 2026, that physical disc production for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. The announcement says this change does not affect games released, or scheduled for release, in disc format before January 2028. This is Sony’s announced plan for new PlayStation releases, not evidence that every existing disc will stop working or that all physical games will disappear on that date. Sony’s PlayStation.Blog announcement is the source for the date and scope.
