How to Check a Used PS4’s Condition Before You Buy

The safest way to buy a second-hand PS4 is to test the actual console before you pay, identify its exact CUH model and storage, confirm that it can use PlayStation services, and get any return promise in writing. A listing that says only “PS4” does not tell you whether it is an original model, Slim or Pro, which revision it is, how much storage it has, or whether its disc drive and ports work.

Use the checklist below in order. If the seller will not allow basic tests, the serial number is missing or altered, the console cannot connect to services, or the return arrangement is only verbal, walk away.

What to check before you meet the seller

Do as much screening as possible before travelling. Ask the seller for a video that shows the console powering on, producing a stable picture, accepting controller input, testing every port and button, reading a disc where applicable, and connecting to the internet. Sony’s used-buying guidance specifically recommends asking for a demonstration of “all ports, buttons, and disc drives (if applicable)” before agreeing to meet.

Ask for the information that affects value

  • The exact console family: original PS4, PS4 Slim or PS4 Pro.
  • The CUH model code printed on the console.
  • Internal storage capacity shown in the system menu, not just the seller’s headline.
  • Whether an optical disc drive is present and working.
  • What is included: DUALSHOCK 4 controller, power cable, HDMI cable, USB cable, stand or original packaging.
  • Any known repairs, replaced parts, liquid exposure, overheating or account problems.
  • The return period, refund conditions and who pays return shipping.

Check the seller’s ratings and feedback on the marketplace. An unusually low price, evasive answers or refusal to demonstrate functions is a reason to pause rather than a reason to rush. Third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered by Sony’s warranty. Certified-refurbished products can have separate warranty coverage, but that is different from an ordinary private or marketplace sale.

  • "Suspend mode" eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button.
  • Enables the greatest game developers in the world to unlock their creativity and push the boundaries of play through a platform that is tuned specifically to their needs.

  • Gamers can share their epic triumphs by hitting the "SHARE button" on the controller, scan through the last few minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game.

Bring a practical test kit

For an in-person inspection, bring a known-good HDMI cable if the seller agrees, a USB cable that can charge a controller, and a USB storage device if you want to test a port. Bring a game disc compatible with the console’s drive, or ask the seller to provide one. Use a display you trust when possible; a faulty television or cable can look like a console fault.

Identify the exact PS4 model and serial number

Read the model and serial labels on the console itself. Compare them with the listing, box and any receipt. Record the CUH code, storage capacity and whether the machine has a disc drive. “1TB” and “Pro” in a listing are claims to verify, not specifications to assume.

Why the CUH code matters

PS4 hardware was sold in multiple revisions. The original PS4, Slim and Pro differ in physical design, ports, dimensions, power requirements and graphics capability. Even within one family, the CUH model identifies a particular regional revision. Record the complete code, including the final letters and numbers, rather than writing only “PS4 Pro.”

Check the system information screen

  1. Turn on the console and sign in with a temporary test user if necessary.
  2. Open Settings and select System.
  3. Open System Information and compare the displayed model and software details with the physical label.
  4. Open Storage (or Storage Management, depending on the software layout) and confirm the reported capacity and available space.

The usable capacity will be lower than the advertised drive size because system software occupies space. What matters at this stage is that the menu reports the expected class of drive and does not show warnings, corruption messages or extremely slow responses.

Record the serial number before payment

Photograph or write down the serial number and include it on a receipt or bill of sale. A removed, defaced or unreadable number is a serious warning: it makes ownership disputes and service claims harder, and Sony’s hardware warranty excludes products with altered or removed serial numbers or warranty seals.

Inspect the case, connectors and cooling path

Examine the console under good light before connecting it. Cosmetic scratches are usually negotiable; structural damage and signs of liquid or heat are not.

Exterior inspection checklist

  • Look for cracks, bent panels, gaps between sections or panels that do not sit flush.
  • Check every HDMI, USB, network, optical-audio and power connector for looseness, bent contacts or impact damage.
  • Look for liquid staining, corrosion, sticky residue or a smell of dampness or burnt electronics.
  • Confirm that all feet are present and that the console sits level.
  • Inspect the ventilation openings for heavy dust, pet hair or blocked passages.
  • Gently move the unit once and listen for rattling parts. Do not shake it forcefully.
  • Check that the serial label and warranty seal are present and have not been cut, peeled or replaced.

Do not open the console during a casual purchase inspection. A broken seal can indicate a prior repair or cleaning and may affect warranty eligibility. It does not prove that the repair was poor, but it means you should demand documentation, a longer return period or a lower risk-adjusted price.

Check where the seller operates it

The PS4 needs unobstructed airflow. During the test, place it on a hard, level surface with space around the vents; do not run it inside a closed cabinet or on soft bedding. A console that overheats because of the seller’s setup may appear healthy briefly, while a console with a damaged fan or clogged heatsink can fail under sustained load.

Run a complete functional test

Test each subsystem, not just the home screen. Keep notes and stop at the first problem so you can ask the seller to explain it.

1. Cold-boot power and HDMI output

  1. Ask the seller to shut the PS4 down fully, not leave it in Rest Mode.
  2. Unplug it briefly, reconnect power and start it with the console’s power button.
  3. Confirm that the indicator light behaves normally and that the system reaches the home screen without repeated restarts.
  4. Watch the picture for flicker, black screens, horizontal lines, sparkles, colour shifts, dropouts or HDCP-related errors.
  5. Gently move the HDMI plug at the console end. The picture should not cut out; do not force the connector.

Test with a known-good cable or display if possible. If the problem follows the console to another cable and screen, treat it as a console fault rather than a television problem.

2. Controller, buttons and charging

Pair the DUALSHOCK 4 and test every input in a game or the system menus:

  • PS button and touchpad click and movement.
  • Face buttons: triangle, circle, cross and square.
  • Directional pad, both analog sticks and stick clicks.
  • L1, L2, R1 and R2, including the full travel of the triggers.
  • Share and Options buttons.
  • Vibration, if a game or controller test can trigger it.

Connect the controller by USB and confirm that it charges. A controller that only works wirelessly, has drift, a loose trigger or a failing battery may require replacement even if the console itself is sound. Confirm how many controllers and which cables are included in the agreed price.

  • Play online with your friends, save games online and more with PlayStation Plus membership (sold separately).
  • All the greatest, games, TV, music and more. Connect with your friends to broadcast and celebrate your epic moments at the press of the Share button to Twitch, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

3. Test every USB port

Plug the controller into each USB port in turn. Confirm that the console recognizes it and charges it. If you brought a known-good storage device, connect it as well and check whether the PS4 detects it. A single dead port may be repairable; multiple ports that fail or disconnect when touched suggest board or connector damage.

4. Test Wi-Fi, Ethernet and PlayStation services

  1. Open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
  2. Connect to the seller’s Wi-Fi, or use Ethernet if available.
  3. Run Test Internet Connection and wait for the result.
  4. If the seller permits, open the PlayStation sign-in or store functions and verify that the console reaches the service normally.

A failed home network can be the seller’s router, so do not diagnose a ban from one failed connection alone. However, a console that repeatedly cannot reach PlayStation services on a working network deserves a clear explanation and a return option. Sony warns that a PlayStation product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services.

5. Test the disc drive on disc-equipped models

  1. Use a known-good game or Blu-ray disc that is clean and free of deep scratches.
  2. Insert it normally and confirm that the console accepts it without grinding, repeated clicking or hesitation.
  3. Wait for the disc icon to appear, then launch the game or allow installation to begin.
  4. Use the eject button and confirm that the disc comes out cleanly.
  5. Insert it again if the first attempt was borderline; intermittent reading is still a fault.

Do not assume a digital-only use case makes a broken drive irrelevant. The drive is part of the hardware you are buying, and replacement can be difficult or uneconomic. If the listing says a disc drive is included, test it or negotiate a price that reflects the untested condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Check storage health and behavior

Open the storage screen and look for the expected drive size, free-space figure and any error messages. Browse menus, start an installed game and copy a small file if practical. Warning signs include unusually long loading, repeated “cannot read” errors, corrupted-data messages, crashes while installing and a drive that disappears from the storage menu.

USB extended storage is separate from the internal drive. If an external drive is included, test it independently and confirm that the seller is not counting it as internal capacity.

7. Apply a sustained load

Run a demanding game for long enough to reveal fan, heat and stability problems rather than stopping at the menu. Listen for a fan that becomes abnormally loud, grinding or fluctuating. Watch for shutdowns, freezes, graphical artifacts, error messages or loss of video. A short demonstration cannot establish long-term thermal health, so the written return period matters even after a successful in-person test.

Check the account, activation and ownership status

Complete this step with the seller present before handing over money. The console should be usable by you without retaining the seller’s access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Ask the seller to back up anything they need and sign out of PlayStation Network.
  2. Have them remove their user account from the PS4.
  3. In Settings > Account Management, have them select Activate as Your Primary PS4, then choose Deactivate when the menu offers it.
  4. Restart the console and confirm that it reaches the initial setup or a clean user-selection screen.
  5. Create a temporary test user or begin setup far enough to verify that the system is not locked to the seller’s credentials.

Deactivation helps ensure the seller no longer has the console designated as their primary system and cannot continue using it to access your console. It does not make a lost-or-stolen console safe to buy: Sony says a reported device may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. Ask for a receipt or bill of sale showing the serial number and seller’s contact details so you have evidence of the transaction.

Warranty, returns and evidence

Get the seller’s promises in writing before payment. Save screenshots of the listing, photographs of the console and accessories, the serial number, messages about faults and the agreed return deadline. If the marketplace provides a formal return process, use it rather than relying on a chat message.

What Sony’s warranty language means for a used buyer

Sony’s buying guidance says third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered by Sony warranty. A certified-refurbished unit can include warranty coverage under its own terms. A Sony PS4 hardware manual for model CUH-7115B specifies a one-year warranty for the original purchaser, while excluding misuse, tampering, normal wear and tear, and products with altered, defaced or removed serial numbers or warranty seals. That original-purchaser wording does not automatically transfer protection to a second owner.

Write down the return conditions

  • Number of days allowed for a return.
  • Whether the return covers intermittent faults discovered after extended play.
  • Refund amount and whether original shipping is included.
  • Who pays return shipping and how the item must be packaged.
  • Whether the listed accessories and storage are part of the return.

A verbal “you can bring it back if anything is wrong” is difficult to enforce. A written policy is part of the console’s value and should influence what you are willing to pay.

Walk away immediately when

  • The seller refuses a basic power-on and port test.
  • The serial number is missing, altered or inconsistent with the listing.
  • The console shows liquid damage, severe corrosion, major cracks or repeated overheating.
  • The seller will not remove their account and deactivate the console.
  • Network-service access cannot be explained or tested on a working connection.
  • The price is attractive only because the return promise is verbal.

What to do after you buy

  1. Photograph the console, serial label and included accessories as soon as you receive it.
  2. Reset it through Settings > Initialization > Initialize PS4 if it was not already returned to setup, after confirming you have the seller’s written records.
  3. Install the latest available system software through the normal system-update menu.
  4. Test every function again during the written return period, including a long gaming session, disc reading, all USB ports and network services.
  5. Keep the packaging until you are satisfied that the console is stable.

If a fault appears, document the exact symptom, date, game or disc involved, error code and steps that reproduce it. Contact the seller through the marketplace’s official channel before attempting a repair; opening the console can affect return or warranty rights.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I tell whether a used PS4 is banned before buying it?

You cannot establish service status from the exterior or serial label alone. Connect the console to a working network and, with the seller’s permission, test PlayStation services. A device reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended, so retain a bill of sale and use a written return period.

Is a loud PS4 fan proof that the console is failing?

No. Fan speed depends on the game, room temperature and airflow. Abnormally loud or grinding noise, overheating warnings, shutdowns, artifacts or instability during a sustained game session are stronger warning signs than a brief increase in fan speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy a PS4 with a broken warranty seal?

Only if the seller provides credible repair details and a return period that covers testing. A broken seal indicates prior opening, and altered or removed seals or serial numbers can exclude Sony warranty coverage.

What is the most important accessory to test?

Test the included DUALSHOCK 4 for every button, both sticks, triggers, touchpad, vibration and USB charging. Also verify the HDMI and power cables, because replacing missing or faulty accessories adds to the real cost.
