Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBuy a used PlayStation only after you have verified its identity, tested the ports and controller, checked the disc drive when fitted, and confirmed that the seller has removed their account. A console that boots is not necessarily a good purchase: intermittent HDMI faults, stick drift, overheating, storage errors, account locks and missing accessories can turn a cheap listing into an expensive repair.
Use the procedure below in person whenever possible. If you cannot meet the seller, request a continuous video showing the same tests, including the serial label, every port, the controller and the disc drive. Sony’s PlayStation buying guide specifically advises asking for a video that tests “all ports, buttons, and disc drives (if applicable)” before agreeing to an in-person visit.

1. Confirm exactly which PlayStation you are buying
“PS5” and “PS4” listings can hide important differences. Identify the generation, model family, storage configuration and disc capability before comparing price or arranging collection.

Match the physical unit to the listing
- Ask the seller to photograph the model and serial-number labels in good light.
- Compare those labels with the listing title, photographs and description. The unit should be identified as a PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, PS5 Digital Edition or a PS5 model with a disc drive.
- Record the model and serial numbers for your own notes. Do not rely on a stock image or a seller’s typed description.
- Check that the serial label has not been removed, scraped, covered or replaced. Sony lists altered or missing serial numbers among warranty exclusions, so treat one as a serious warning even if the console appears to work.
| Identity to verify | What must be true before purchase | Test implication |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 | The exact PS4 model and included storage/accessories match the listing. | Test HDMI, USB, network, controller and the optical drive if the advertised unit has one. |
| PS4 Pro | The listing clearly identifies the Pro model rather than a standard PS4. | Use the same functional checks; do not pay a Pro premium for an incorrectly identified console. |
| PS5 with a disc drive | The console physically has the drive and the seller has not substituted a Digital Edition. | Test insertion, recognition, installation or playback and ejection with a known-good disc. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | The listing and price reflect that there is no optical drive. | Do not expect a disc test. Confirm that you are comfortable buying a download-only console. |
| PS5 model described only as “PS5” | The seller states whether it is the disc or Digital Edition and supplies matching photographs. | Resolve the ambiguity before travelling or paying a deposit. |
Ask for a live demonstration before travelling
Request a single, unedited video in which the seller shows the serial label, starts the console from a powered-off state, opens settings, connects a controller, tests every port, launches a game or application and tests the disc drive when present. A video cannot prove long-term reliability, but it can expose a missing drive, damaged socket, account lock or obvious error before you spend time and travel money.
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
2. Bring the right equipment for an in-person test
A quick power-on demonstration is not enough. Arrange to use a known-good television or monitor and bring equipment that lets you isolate the console from the seller’s accessories.
- A television or monitor with a working HDMI input.
- Your own known-good HDMI cable, if the seller permits it, so a faulty cable does not hide a console problem.
- A compatible controller, or the included controller plus its charging cable.
- A known-good compatible game or movie disc for a console with an optical drive.
- A power outlet you know works. Avoid judging a console through a loose extension lead or overloaded power strip.
- A phone or notebook for recording the model, serial number, included accessories and any defects.
Ask permission before connecting anything and keep the test transparent. If the seller refuses a basic, reasonable check, do not compensate for that risk by offering more money.
3. Inspect the exterior before switching on
Look for impact, liquid and heat damage
- Examine every panel for cracks, gaps, deep scratches, melted plastic, discoloration or liquid marks.
- Check vents for packed dust, insect residue or signs that the console was operated in a smoky or damp environment.
- Inspect the feet and, on a PS5, the stand or mounting hardware. Missing or damaged support parts can leave the console unstable and restrict airflow.
- Look at the HDMI socket with a light. It should be straight, firmly mounted and free from bent contacts or a pushed-in shell.
- Check USB sockets for bent tongues, looseness or corrosion.
- Look for missing expansion covers, drive covers or cosmetic pieces that the listing did not disclose.
Check for evidence of opening or repair
Uneven seams, missing screws, mismatched panels, damaged security seals or tool marks suggest that the console has been opened. Opening does not automatically mean the unit is defective, but ask what was repaired, who performed it and whether a receipt exists. Sony’s safety and warranty information excludes unauthorized opening or service, so a repaired unit may not have the protection you expect from a new product.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A removed or altered serial label is different from ordinary cosmetic wear: make it a walk-away condition unless you have an unusually strong, written return arrangement and a price that reflects the risk.
4. Test power-on, boot and system stability
Observe a complete cold boot
- Have the seller shut the console down completely rather than leaving it in rest mode.
- Turn it on and watch for a normal startup sequence, stable indicator lights and a picture on the display.
- Let it reach the home screen. Do not accept a test that stops at the startup logo.
- Open settings and move through several menus. Look for freezes, missing text, graphical corruption or repeated error messages.
- Launch a game or application and leave it running long enough to reveal shutdowns, overheating warnings, fan surges or storage errors.
Listen for a fan that immediately races and stays loud, repeated clicking, grinding or electrical buzzing. A brief change in fan speed during loading is not by itself proof of failure; persistent noise accompanied by heat warnings, crashes or shutdowns is a reason to decline.
Check storage behavior
Open the game or application library and confirm that installed content appears normally. Watch for “storage corrupted,” repeated repair prompts, unusually long loading, missing thumbnails or an inability to install a small update. You cannot determine remaining drive life from one visit, so treat unexplained storage messages as a present fault rather than a promise that a reset will fix it.
5. Verify HDMI, audio and every accessible port
HDMI and display test
- Connect the console directly to a known-good television or monitor, without an AV receiver, switch or capture device in between.
- Use a known-good HDMI cable and select the correct input.
- Confirm a stable picture while moving through menus and launching a game. Watch for flicker, sparkles, black screens, intermittent signal loss or a picture that returns only when the plug is held at an angle.
- Confirm that sound arrives through the display or the expected audio path.
- Gently touch the cable near the socket without forcing it. Excessive movement at the socket indicates a loose or damaged connector.
An HDMI fault can be intermittent and may not appear during a seller’s short demonstration. Test both the startup screen and an active game, and repeat the connection once after the console has warmed up.
USB and network checks
- Insert the controller cable into each USB port that you intend to use. Confirm charging and, where applicable, data recognition.
- Connect another USB accessory if available and permitted. A port that supplies power but never recognizes data may still be defective.
- Connect the console to the seller’s network or a permitted hotspot and verify that it can reach the network. On PS4, the built-in path is Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
- Do not confuse a seller’s slow or restricted internet with a console fault. The relevant result is whether the console can establish a connection and report it consistently.
6. Test the included controller as a separate piece of hardware
A worn controller can erase the value of an otherwise sound console. Pair the included controller and test each function rather than checking only the analog sticks.
- Press every face button, the D-pad, both stick clicks and each shoulder button.
- Pull both triggers slowly through their full travel. They should register smoothly without sticking or activating when untouched.
- Move each analog stick through a full circle and leave it centered. In a game or system menu, look for a character or cursor that drifts without input.
- Press and swipe the touchpad where supported, and test motion response in a compatible game or menu.
- Connect headphones to the controller jack and confirm that audio and microphone input work if you need them.
- Disconnect the cable and verify a stable wireless connection at normal seating distance.
- Charge the controller and check that the console recognizes it. A controller that works only while plugged in may need a battery repair or replacement.
Record missing buttons, stick drift, a weak battery, a damaged charging port or a cracked shell. If the controller fails, deduct the current cost of a suitable replacement DualSense or DualShock 4 from your offer rather than assuming the seller will provide one later.

- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, Disc Drive, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold separately
7. Test the optical drive when the console has one
Use a known-good disc
- Inspect the disc for deep scratches, then insert a known-good compatible game or movie disc.
- Confirm that the console accepts it smoothly and displays the correct title.
- Start installation or playback. Wait long enough to establish that recognition is not a brief menu glitch.
- Listen for abnormal grinding, repeated clicking or scraping. A short mechanical sound during insertion can be normal; persistent noise is not.
- Eject the disc from the system menu and, if available, the physical eject control. It should come out cleanly without being pulled or tilted.
- Repeat with a second disc if the first result is uncertain.
A PS5 model with a disc drive supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD media. A PS5 Digital Edition has no drive at all, so first confirm the model identity. Do not pay for a “disc version” whose drive the seller will not demonstrate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Confirm account, activation and reset status
At handover
The seller should sign out and deactivate the console so they no longer have access to it. Ask them to demonstrate this while the console is connected, then restart it and verify that it reaches a setup or neutral user-selection state rather than opening directly into their profile.
Do not accept a console that remains tied to the seller’s account, requires their password to use purchased content or displays an activation warning they cannot explain. A receipt or a photograph of the seller’s identity does not replace account removal.
After you take ownership
- Before adding your account, connect the console to your own display and network and confirm that the basic tests still pass.
- Back up any data that is legitimately yours, if applicable.
- Use Sony’s official reset process for the specific PS4 or PS5 model to erase the previous user’s data and restore a clean setup state.
- Only then add your account, enable your preferred security settings and download your own games.
Sony’s transfer and disposal guidance says to back up data and reset a PS4 or PS5 before replacing, transferring or disposing of it. The same principle protects a buyer from inheriting another person’s saved data or account access.
9. Review warranty, repairs and return protection
Questions to ask the seller
- Is the original purchase receipt available, and does it show the date and model?
- Has the console or controller ever been opened, repaired, liquid-damaged or modified?
- What accessories are included: power cable, HDMI cable, stand, charging cable, controller and any drive cover?
- Is there a written return period? Ask how many days you have, who pays return shipping and what condition the console must be in.
- Is the seller a private individual or a retailer offering its own used-product warranty?
Do not assume that a third-party used console carries Sony’s new-product warranty. Altered serial numbers and unauthorized opening or service can exclude warranty coverage. Keep the listing, messages, receipt and photographs until the return period has expired.
Make the return terms testable
A useful return promise states the deadline, acceptable fault conditions and refund method in writing. “It worked when shipped” is not equivalent to a return policy. If the seller will not let you test HDMI, power, the controller or the disc drive, require a clearly written inspection period or walk away.

10. Calculate the total cost, not just the listing price
Compare the used console with a retailer-backed refurbished unit using the same specification. Add every item you would need immediately:
- A replacement controller if the included one has drift, a weak battery or broken buttons.
- A stand, power cable, HDMI cable or charging cable that is missing.
- A storage replacement if the internal drive reports errors or cannot install content.
- A compatible disc drive for a PS5 model designed to accept one, if the drive is missing or defective.
- Shipping, collection travel, payment fees and the cost of returning a faulty unit.
- The value of a written retailer return window or warranty that the private listing does not provide.
Inventory and prices change, so use current local prices when you make the comparison. A lower sticker price is not a saving if one failed controller, drive or HDMI repair removes the difference.
11. Use a clear decision rule
| Finding | Action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| All essential tests pass; identity and serial are clear; seller access is removed; return or warranty terms are acceptable. | Buy at the agreed total cost. | The principal risks have been checked and documented. |
| Only documented cosmetic wear or a missing low-cost accessory is present. | Negotiate a lower price that reflects the replacement or repair. | The defect is visible, limited and priced into the deal. |
| Missing or altered serial number. | Walk away. | Ownership and warranty status cannot be reliably established. |
| Seller refuses a basic test or will not provide a credible return path. | Walk away. | You would be accepting unmeasured hardware and account risk. |
| Intermittent HDMI, power instability, repeated shutdowns or serious storage errors. | Walk away. | These faults can require expensive diagnosis and repair. |
| Disc drive fails when the listing advertises a disc model. | Walk away unless the drive is repaired before purchase under written terms. | The console does not match the promised capability. |
| Seller account remains linked or requires their credentials. | Walk away until the console is properly deactivated and reset. | You cannot securely take ownership of a console controlled by another account. |
12. Final handover checklist
Complete this list before money changes hands:
- Model, edition and disc capability match the listing.
- Serial number is present, readable and photographed.
- No undisclosed cracks, liquid marks, severe dust or bent connectors are visible.
- Cold boot reaches the home screen without errors.
- HDMI picture and sound remain stable during a game.
- USB ports charge and recognize the controller or accessory you tested.
- Network connection succeeds; on PS4, Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection completes.
- Every controller button, stick, trigger, touchpad, motion function, headset jack and wireless connection works.
- Disc insertion, recognition, playback or installation and ejection work when a drive is advertised.
- No overheating warning, abnormal shutdown, repeated error or storage-corruption message appears during the session.
- Seller has signed out and deactivated the console.
- Included accessories, receipt and written return terms are recorded.
- Total delivered cost remains worthwhile after likely replacements and return expenses.
Your verdict
Buy only when the console’s identity is clear, the essential hardware tests pass and the seller has removed their account. Negotiate for documented cosmetic wear or a cheap missing accessory. Walk away from altered serial labels, refused tests, account links, intermittent HDMI or power, serious storage errors and a failed advertised disc drive. This disciplined check is faster and cheaper than discovering a hidden fault after the seller is unreachable.
