How to Check a Stellar DeFi Protocol Before Connecting Your Wallet

A practical checklist for verifying the site, network, contract, wallet authorization, and simulation before a Stellar DeFi transaction.

To check a Stellar DeFi protocol before connecting your wallet, verify the site and intended network, identify the exact contract and function, inspect what the wallet asks you to authorize, and simulate a proposed Soroban call where possible. These checks help you understand an interaction; they do not prove that a protocol or its code is safe.

How do I check a Stellar DeFi protocol before connecting my wallet?

Start with the project and the specific action you plan to take. A familiar name, a wallet connection, or an ecosystem listing does not establish that a site or deployed contract is authentic. Stellar’s Contract Explorer guidance includes a network selector, but selecting a network does not authenticate the project or contract.

  1. Verify the site. Navigate from a project source you already trust, such as its established documentation, rather than following an unsolicited message or advertisement. Check the domain carefully.
  2. Confirm the network. Make sure the site and wallet indicate the Stellar network you intended to use. Do not proceed if they disagree or the network is unclear.
  3. Find the contract ID and function. Compare the contract ID and intended function with the project’s documentation and other trustworthy references. A protocol name alone does not prove that a contract ID is genuine.
  4. Understand the proposed action. Identify the arguments, addresses, and assets involved before approving anything. If those details are unavailable or do not match what you meant to do, stop and investigate.

This process can establish what a proposed interaction appears to target. It does not independently verify a protocol’s deployment, governance, administrators, economics, or security.

What should I check before signing a Soroban transaction?

Read the wallet prompt as a description of the action you are authorizing, not as a routine confirmation. Stellar documentation distinguishes authorization—deciding which operations an account permits—from authentication, which concerns proving identity or control.

  • Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
  • Check the contract or destination, function, arguments, addresses, and assets shown in the prompt.
  • Compare the requested action with the one you initiated. A prompt that is opaque, unexpected, or materially different is a reason not to sign until you can explain it.
  • Do not treat connecting a wallet as proof that a later request is safe. Review each authorization or transaction separately.

Stellar’s Soroban transaction-signing guide distinguishes signing a transaction from signing an authorization entry. It describes transaction signing as intended for accounts that fully trust and know how to thoroughly verify the transaction’s authenticity and security. The guide recommends enforcement-mode simulation to validate signatures and execution before submission.

Can I simulate a Stellar smart-contract transaction before submitting it?

Yes. The Stellar RPC simulateTransaction method can simulate a contract invocation without submitting it. The reference describes it for a single invokeHostFunction transaction and lists authorization modes including enforce, record, and record_allow_nonroot. It can return effective transaction data, required authorizations, simulation results, and a minimal resource fee. The reference page was last updated August 19, 2025, so consult the live documentation for current details.

In Stellar Lab’s Contract Explorer, the documented flow is to choose a network, enter a contract and function, provide parameters, and simulate. Simulation can help you inspect the proposed call’s results and fees before deciding what to do.

Read calls and write calls are different

Stellar Lab’s guidance says a read operation does not change contract state; you do not need to submit a read just to inspect its result. A write operation changes network data and should be submitted only when you intend that state change. Use the tool’s guidance and the wallet prompt to understand which kind of operation you are dealing with.

Simulation is a preview, not a safety verdict

A simulation runs against a temporary ledger snapshot. The ledger can change before you submit, making the simulated footprint stale and the later outcome different. A successful simulation does not establish that the protocol is benign, that its code has been audited, or that the interaction is appropriate for you.

How should I assess a protocol’s audit claims?

An audit label alone is not enough to establish what was reviewed. If a project cites an audit, locate the report and check the reviewing organization, the specific contracts and versions in scope, and whether the deployed code matches that scope. An audit describes a review; it is not a guarantee of safety. No particular protocol’s audit history or contract deployment is established here, so those claims require project-specific verification.

When should I stop rather than connect or sign?

  • You cannot establish that you are on the intended site or network.
  • The contract ID, function, arguments, addresses, or assets do not match the action you intended.
  • The wallet prompt is too opaque to understand or asks for an unexpected authorization.
  • You cannot explain the state change a write operation would make.
  • You are relying on a successful simulation, an ecosystem listing, or an audit label as proof that the protocol is safe.

When any of these apply, do not sign while uncertain. Seek enough reliable information to understand the exact interaction first.
