If your driving licence has been “suspended” after a phone-use incident, first check what actually happened: a fixed penalty, a court disqualification, or licence revocation are different outcomes with different next steps. In Great Britain, do not drive while disqualified. Check your driving record and the court order for the end date and any retest requirement before deciding when you can drive again. Northern Ireland has different procedures; contact the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) for licence matters.
First, identify what “suspended” means in your case
A phone-use allegation does not automatically mean you have been banned. Read any notice or court order carefully, then check your driving record to confirm your status and, if you are disqualified, the end date. In Great Britain, the relevant outcome may be one of these:

- Fixed penalty: Police may issue a fixed penalty notice. This is not the same as a court-imposed disqualification. GOV.UK says the police may also warn you, offer driver training, take no action, or charge you with an offence. GOV.UK: Using a mobile phone when driving.
- Court disqualification: A court may ban you from driving following a conviction. The court decides the length based on the seriousness of the offence. A separate totting-up disqualification may follow when you reach 12 or more penalty points within three years.
- New-driver revocation: If you passed your test within the last two years, the new-driver rules can mean your licence is revoked after reaching six penalty points. Revocation is not the same as an ordinary disqualification.
These procedures describe Great Britain. GOV.UK notes that some disqualification rules differ in Northern Ireland; contact the DVA there rather than relying on DVLA instructions.

What penalties can phone use bring?
GOV.UK says holding and using a phone or other device that can send or receive data while driving can result in six penalty points and a £200 fine. The figures are official guidance, not statistical findings. For the described device offence, a court may impose a fine of up to £1,000, or up to £2,500 for a lorry or bus driver. Separately, reaching 12 or more penalty points within three years can lead to a totting-up disqualification. GOV.UK lists the standard periods as six months for a first ban, 12 months for a second ban within three years, and two years for a third within three years. If you have been disqualified, do not drive until the ban ends
Check your driving record and the court order for your disqualification end date. The return-to-driving process in Great Britain depends on how long the ban lasts:

If you received a fixed penalty notice
If you believe a fixed penalty notice was unjust, GOV.UK says you may choose not to pay and argue your case in court. This is different from challenging a decision a court has already made. If the magistrates’ court has already decided your case
GOV.UK describes an application process for eligible challenges, including where you did not know about the case, did not attend, or the court did not have all the evidence. You can apply by phone or online; you will need the case reference and, for a driving case, your licence number. You can speak with a legal representative or legal adviser before applying. GOV.UK: Challenge a magistrates’ court decision.
Do not assume a challenge pauses a ban or permits you to drive. The application guidance does not establish that. Check your court order and obtain advice about your own status before driving or taking action.

Do you need to hand in or reapply for your licence?
GOV.UK says a fixed-penalty recipient does not need to hand their licence to the police or fixed penalty office to accept the notice; the office sends the endorsement to DVLA. A court may require you to hand in your licence, and DVLA may request it in specified cases. Follow the instructions in your notice or order. GOV.UK: Returning your driving licence.
For a disqualification lasting 56 days or more, apply for a new licence before driving again. A shorter ban does not require a new application, but you must wait until it has ended. If your licence was revoked under the new-driver rules, you must apply for a new provisional licence and retake both parts of the test. Check the court order for any additional test requirement.

Can you ask for a disqualification to end early?
You may apply to the court that disqualified you to reduce the ban, but only after the required waiting period and with a good reason. GOV.UK says the waiting period is two years for a ban under four years; half the ban for one of at least four but under ten years; or five years for a ban of ten years or more. Write to the disqualifying court with the offence and conviction dates and supporting information. An application is not an entitlement to have the ban reduced. GOV.UK: Driving disqualifications.
Prevent another phone-use offence
GOV.UK’s guidance says, “You must stay in full control of your vehicle at all times.” It also says, “You can use devices with hands-free access, as long as you do not hold them at any time during usage.” A phone mount can help keep a device hands-free, but it does not make holding or using it while driving lawful, and it must not obstruct your view.
