Stellar DeFi combines exchange and liquidity features built into the Stellar protocol with applications built on Soroban, Stellar’s smart-contract platform. Its built-in order book and automated market maker are distinct from Soroban-based swaps or lending apps, while anchors connect some Stellar assets to fiat payment services. These parts work together across the ecosystem, but they are not all one interchangeable system.
What makes up Stellar’s DeFi ecosystem?
There are three main layers to understand:
- Protocol-native trading and liquidity: Stellar includes an order-book decentralized exchange and built-in automated market-maker (AMM) pools.
- Smart-contract applications: Soroban lets developers build application-level services, including swaps and lending or borrowing protocols.
- Anchors and payment rails: Anchor services connect certain Stellar assets to traditional payment methods by accepting deposits or redeeming tokens, subject to the provider’s terms.
Stellar’s current product site calls the smart-contract platform “Stellar Smart Contracts” and identifies Soroban as its former name. Developer documentation and ecosystem materials still use “Soroban,” so both names may appear when exploring the network.

How does Stellar’s built-in exchange and AMM work?
Order-book trading
The Stellar protocol maintains account balances and supports an order-book decentralized exchange. In an order book, participants place offers to trade one asset for another; this is a different trading mechanism from an AMM pool.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuilt-in AMM pools
A built-in liquidity pool holds two assets. Its constant-product invariant constrains trades as the pool’s asset balances change. A liquidity provider deposits eligible assets and receives pool shares representing a proportional claim on the pool. Fees accrue proportionally and are collected when the provider withdraws.

- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
Stellar’s liquidity documentation describes a 30-basis-point (0.30%) trading fee for its built-in AMM pools. That is the pool trading fee, not a Stellar network fee. Accounts need the appropriate trustlines for the assets in a pool and for the pool shares.
How are Soroban DeFi apps different?
Soroban is the programmable application layer, where developers can build services such as swaps, lending and borrowing, wallets, bridges, and oracles. Those services are application logic, rather than the protocol’s built-in exchange or AMM.

Stellar’s developer documentation includes a constant-product pool contract as an example of how a Soroban app can handle token deposits, proportional shares, and fee accrual. The documentation explicitly warns that the example is not ready for production. It also says Soroban pools are exclusive to Soroban and cannot interact with the built-in Stellar AMM pools.

| Where it runs | As protocol functionality on Stellar | As a smart-contract application on Soroban |
| Pool mechanics | Two-asset pool, constant-product invariant, proportional pool shares, and documented 0.30% trading fee | Can implement pool mechanics in application logic; the cited constant-product contract is an example, not production-ready |
| Can the pools interact? | No interaction with Soroban pools | No interaction with built-in Stellar AMM pools |
Where do lending and other protocols fit?
Lending and borrowing are examples of services built at the application layer. Stellar names Blend as a lending and borrowing protocol and says it helps power a yield product on the Meru digital wallet. A Stellar developer meeting dated April 16, 2026, reported Blend above $80 million in total value locked (TVL) at that time. Treat that figure as a dated snapshot, not a current balance or a measure of safety, returns, or future liquidity.

- Multiple ways of locking: you can use the matching screws to lock up the steel bitcoin wallets; You can also lock them up and hide them in other places if you still feel unsafe; The hole on the bitcoin wallet measures 6 mm/ 0.24 inch in diameter, suitable for hanging
The same meeting notes reported that Sushi had deployed a concentrated-liquidity decentralized exchange on Stellar, with PYUSD/USDC and XLM/USDC pools live at the time. That report does not establish whether those pools remain available now. Availability and pool conditions can change.
How do anchors connect Stellar to fiat services?
An anchor is a service that connects Stellar to traditional payment rails. It can accept fiat and issue an equivalent digital token, or redeem tokens for real-world value. Stellar identifies several standards used for these integrations:

- READY IN 3 MINUTES – Set up your ELLIPAL X Card crypto wallet on the offline Starter device, then tap to the ELLIPAL mobile App and start using it. This 100% offline crypto wallet is a no battery crypto wallet with no charging, no firmware updates, and no complicated setup.
- TURN ANY WALLET INTO A CARD – Already have a wallet? Import your recovery phrase from MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Ledger, Trezor, or any compatible seed phrase wallet. X Card works as a backup wallet and physical twin of your existing bitcoin wallet, ethereum wallet, NFT wallet, or altcoin wallet — no transfers, no new accounts, no starting over.
- BUILT ON AN EAL6+ SECURE CHIP – Designed as a secure crypto wallet and private key wallet, X Card generates and stores your private keys inside the EAL6+ secure chip. Your keys never reach your phone, the App, USB, Bluetooth, or the internet, making it a true no bluetooth hardware wallet and no USB crypto wallet.
- ONE APP, EVERYTHING CRYPTO – Manage more with one cold storage wallet. Buy, sell, swap, send, spend, and earn across 45+ blockchains and 10,000+ tokens. Use X Card as your cryptocurrency wallet, coins and tokens wallet, DeFi wallet, and staking wallet for everyday crypto management.
- TAP TO CRYPTO – Carry your crypto cold wallet on a card and secure every transaction with one NFC tap. ELLIPAL X Card combines the simplicity of a crypto wallet with the protection of a cold storage hardware wallet.
- SEP-6: programmatic deposits and withdrawals. A wallet integration can collect and submit customer information.
- SEP-24: hosted deposits and withdrawals. The anchor uses a hosted web view to collect customer information.
- SEP-31: an API standard for cross-border payments.
These standards describe integration approaches; they do not guarantee that a particular anchor supports a given asset, payment method, country, or customer. Availability, identity checks, supported assets, and terms vary by provider and location. Stellar’s official Anchor Directory is a place to look for anchor services, but check each provider’s current requirements before relying on it.

- For a swap or pool: confirm whether it uses the built-in AMM or a Soroban contract, which assets and markets are supported, what fees apply, and what liquidity is available.
- For lending: read the protocol’s documentation for its collateral, borrowing, and liquidation rules; the general ecosystem descriptions do not establish one set of lending terms.
- For a Soroban contract: look for production-specific documentation and security information. Do not treat Stellar’s example pool contract as audited or ready-to-use software.
- For a fiat deposit or redemption: confirm provider availability, supported assets, identity requirements, payment methods, and terms for your location.
- For any DeFi transaction: account for changing liquidity, asset, contract, and provider conditions. The cited materials do not establish that every protocol has the same risk profile.
