Before installing a Steam game, open its Steam Store page and check System Requirements. Match the requirements for the operating system you’ll use against your PC, then make sure the drive where you plan to install the game has at least the listed available space.
Find the game’s system requirements on Steam
- Open the game’s Steam Store page.
- Find the System Requirements section. Steam Support says each game’s requirements are listed on its Store page: Steam Support: Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Software.
- Read the requirements for the operating system you intend to use. Some listings separate Windows, macOS, and SteamOS + Linux requirements, and the specifications can differ between them. Unpacking’s Steam listing provides an example.
Compare your PC against the right requirements
Check every component the listing specifies, not just the processor or graphics card:

- Operating system and version
- Processor
- Memory (RAM)
- Graphics hardware
- DirectX version or other listed conditions
If Steam lists both Minimum and Recommended specifications, compare your PC with each set separately. Minimum requirements are a baseline, not a promise of a particular frame rate or smooth experience; recommended specifications describe a higher target, not an absolute prerequisite to install.

Steam cautions that meeting a game’s system requirements does not guarantee high FPS or strong performance. Updates can also add features or improve graphical fidelity, potentially making a game run less well on older hardware. Recheck the Store page if the game has been updated since you last looked. Steam Support explains these performance caveats.

Check storage on the drive you’ll use
Look for the game’s stated storage or available-space requirement in its Steam listing. Compare that figure with free space on the particular drive where the Steam library and game will be installed—not just with the total free space across your PC.
Requirements are specific to each title, so one game’s storage figure is not a reliable estimate for another. For example, Steam listings accessed on October 9, 2026 showed 1 GB available space for Unpacking, 40 GB for PRAGMATA, and 50 GB for The Alters.

Available space may differ from the final installed size
Do not assume the listing’s available-space figure equals the game’s completed installation footprint. The Evil Within’s Steam listing calls for 50 GB available for installation and notes that the completed PC installation takes approximately 41 GB. Use the stated available-space requirement when deciding whether you can install.

If the intended drive does not have enough space
- Choose another suitable drive or Steam library with enough free space.
- If no suitable drive has room, consider adding storage or upgrading a drive.
- Check any storage-related notes in the game listing. SSD guidance is title-specific: PRAGMATA and The Alters include SSD recommendations or specifications; that does not make an SSD a universal requirement for Steam games.
