To ride a Waymo robotaxi, request a trip in the Waymo app where service is available, follow the app’s pickup directions, unlock the vehicle, and tap Start ride once you are seated and buckled. The car may meet you somewhere other than the pin you entered, so check the suggested pickup spot and its countdown before walking to it. In Austin and Atlanta, rides are booked through Uber instead.
Where can you book a Waymo ride?
Waymo’s FAQ currently lists Dallas, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, Orlando, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Tampa as service markets. Availability is not necessarily open to everyone or every address within those places: some areas may have invitation or early-rider access, and coverage can change. Check the actual pickup and destination in the app rather than relying on a city name alone. In Austin and Atlanta, Waymo says riders should book through Uber. How do you request and pay for a ride?
- Install the Waymo app and create an account. Enter your destination and choose an available pickup point.
- Review the proposed pickup and drop-off. The app selects locations the vehicle can reach and stop at; they may not match the curb or map pin you expected.
- Check the fare estimate before requesting. The estimate is specific to the trip shown in your app.
- Request the ride. Waymo says up to four passengers can ride.
Add a valid payment method before your first ride, even if you plan to use Waymo Cash. Waymo lists Apple Pay, Google Pay, major credit cards, and debit cards; gift cards and the option to buy Waymo Cash in the app may not be available to every rider. See Waymo’s FAQ for current payment details.

There is no single fare that applies across markets and trips. Waymo says fares account for a minimum price, distance, and trip duration; the estimate can also reflect demand, pickup and drop-off availability, advance booking, tolls, airport access fees, applicable surcharges, and changes to a trip. Late cancellations or no-shows may incur fees. Use the estimate displayed for your own itinerary rather than assuming a fare from another city or time will apply. Waymo says a trip’s fare is based on its most direct route, so an unexpected reroute does not change that trip’s cost. Waymo explains fare factors in its FAQ.

Can you schedule a Waymo ride?
If scheduling is offered for your trip, Waymo’s current help information says you can book from five minutes to one hour ahead. The fare is determined when you book and changes only if you edit the ride; arrival may be within five minutes of the selected time. A standard cancellation fee may apply once the vehicle is on its way. These options and terms depend on the market and what the app offers, so check the booking screen. Where will the car pick you up?
Expect the app to direct you to a spot the vehicle can safely and legally reach—not necessarily the exact pin, building entrance, or curb you had in mind. Traffic, road closures, construction, pedestrians, cyclists, parked cars, and restrictions such as bus stops or red curbs can affect where the car can stop. Waymo says it notifies you if the walk to pickup is more than three minutes.

Review the pickup instructions before setting out. You may be able to select another available pickup point in the app. The Minimize walking time setting aims to bring the car to your side of the street, but it does not guarantee no walking; a shorter walk can also mean a longer trip. Accessibility and pickup options can vary by location. Waymo’s pickup guidance describes these options.

- Watch for arrival alerts. Waymo says the app notifies you when the car is one minute away and when it arrives.
- Follow the app’s countdown. The car usually waits five minutes, but may have to leave sooner in a busy area. If you miss the pickup, the ride may be canceled and a no-show fee may apply.
- Use the car-finding tools if needed. Select Find my pickup or Find my car for visual, audio, and haptic directions. Depending on the situation, the app may also offer a chime or horn option. Contact Support if you still cannot locate the vehicle.
- Unlock, enter, and buckle up. The vehicle arrives locked. Unlock it in the app; automatic unlocking or door opening may be available depending on the vehicle.
- Start the trip. Tap Start ride in the app or on the in-car screen.
The in-car screen shows the route and what the Waymo Driver sees. You can use the screen, physical seat and window controls, and cabin preferences; Waymo says other controls are off-limits. If you need to end the trip before the destination, choose Pull over in the app or on the screen. The vehicle will look for a safe place to stop. Waymo’s rider help covers pickup and in-car controls.

What happens at drop-off?
Wait until the vehicle has fully stopped, open the door, exit, and close the door behind you. If the drop-off point is unsuitable, Waymo says Pull ahead can direct the car to the next eligible spot up to a block ahead at no charge. See Waymo’s ride guidance for drop-off instructions.

Waymo documents screen-reader compatibility, spoken in-car announcements, pickup wayfinding, and the Minimize walking time option. Service animals may accompany riders. Its wheelchair-accessible vehicle service uses manually driven vehicles, not autonomous ones. Booking arrangements differ by city: Waymo describes app requests in San Francisco and Los Angeles, contacting Support in Phoenix, and local providers in Las Vegas. For help during a trip, use Help in the app or Support on the in-car screen. Waymo says Support is available by phone, chat, and email 24/7. Chat is intended for simple questions; email is for non-urgent matters, with a stated response time of within 24 hours. Waymo’s support guidance explains how to reach the team.
