Before buying a Windows laptop, check that it can run your essential apps, handle your files and peripherals, and fit the way you use Apple services. Plan to move files separately from apps and accounts, then keep your Mac until you have verified the new setup.
1. Check your apps and everyday workflows
Make a list of the apps and workflows you rely on, especially those used for work, creative projects, or specialist equipment. For each one, check the publisher’s current Windows version, supported file formats, plug-ins or fonts, hardware drivers, and license or subscription terms. A Windows version may require a separate download, license, or alternative workflow.

- Include browser extensions and any work or school software.
- Identify tasks that depend on Apple-only apps or services, rather than assuming another app will behave the same way.
- Download Windows applications from their publishers. Moving files to a PC does not install Mac applications.
Compatibility depends on the specific app and its current release; check with the publisher for the software you use.

Separate files from apps, settings, and account access. Microsoft’s documentation for a PC-to-PC transfer feature says that feature is no longer available and points users to Windows Backup and Restore. The documented transfer excludes applications, saved sign-in credentials, OneDrive files, and BitLocker-encrypted drives. For supported Windows 11 restore setups, Microsoft describes using the same Microsoft account, and notes that apps may need to be reinstalled. Features and availability vary, so check the instructions for the Windows version and setup offered by your new laptop.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)

Choose a transfer route based on how much data you have and whether it is already synced or you can get online:
Cloud sync
For files already stored in a cloud service such as OneDrive, verify they appear online before switching. Sign in to the same account on the PC and allow syncing to finish. Do not assume a cloud placeholder on the Mac means the file is fully available offline or that a transfer feature will copy it.

External storage
An external SSD, hard drive, USB drive, or SD card can suit a large library or an offline transfer. Check that it has enough capacity and that its connectors work with both computers. Microsoft’s Surface guidance for moving from Mac to Windows recommends exFAT for cross-platform drive compatibility. After copying, browse the destination folders to check the files, then safely eject the drive.
Manual copying
For a smaller move, copy selected folders and verify them on the PC. Make an explicit list that may include Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music, Movies, and project folders. Important data can also live in app-specific libraries or on external volumes, so do not rely on the familiar folders alone.

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
3. Audit Apple services and account access
Write down how you use your Mac with your iPhone or iPad, iCloud Drive, Photos, Messages, AirDrop, Apple Watch, AirPods, and Apple-specific apps. Check each feature you rely on; availability of one Apple service on Windows does not establish that the rest of your workflow carries over.
Apple offers iCloud for Windows through the Microsoft Store. Apple says its latest version requires Windows 11 or later, and Outlook 2021 or later for the relevant Outlook integration. Confirm the current requirements and supported features for your intended use on Apple’s iCloud for Windows guidance.

5. Keep the Mac until the move is verified
Use the Windows laptop alongside the Mac until you have checked your data and signed into essential services. Microsoft recommends reviewing important folders and keeping the previous computer until files and apps have been verified.
- Open representative documents, photos, and project files on the Windows laptop.
- Check that cloud files appear and syncing has completed.
- Install and launch critical Windows apps, then confirm any needed licenses or plug-ins.
- Test displays, storage, audio devices, and other important peripherals.
- Sign in to essential accounts and verify multifactor authentication works.
Only after these checks should you consider erasing or trading in the Mac.
