Inspect your skateboard before every ride. Check the deck, trucks and hardware, wheels and bearings, and the standing surface. If a part is cracked, broken, seriously loose, or not working normally, do not ride until it is repaired or replaced.
Use this pre-ride inspection
- Look over the deck. Check the wood across the board, especially around the truck mounting areas, for cracks, splits, or splintering. A product-specific Playlife manual says to check the deck wood before use and not ride a deck with cracks; New Zealand Transport Agency guidance says to replace cracked boards. Playlife skateboard manual; NZTA skateboard guidance.
- Check trucks and fasteners. Look for cracks, broken pieces, or parts that move when they should be secure. Check the truck mounting screws, axle nuts, and other hardware. Tighten hardware that is merely loose, but do not treat tightening as a fix for damaged parts. CPSC, Skateboarding Safety; AAOS OrthoInfo, Skateboarding Safety.
- Inspect wheels and bearings. Look for cracks, nicks, or obvious wear. Spin each wheel and check that it turns normally; if it binds, wobbles, or otherwise behaves unusually, stop and inspect the wheel and bearing rather than riding on it. - Check the standing surface and edges. Make sure the top is not slippery and that no sharp metal edges are exposed. AAOS OrthoInfo, Skateboarding Safety; National Safety Council, Skateboarding Safety.
- Scan the route before setting off. Look for holes, bumps, rocks, debris, uneven pavement, and slippery patches. A sound board does not make an unsafe riding surface safe. CPSC, Skateboarding Safety; National Safety Council, Skateboarding Safety.
When not to ride
Do not ride if you find a cracked or broken part, serious looseness, or a component that malfunctions. Replace a cracked deck or other damaged component; tightening is appropriate only for hardware that is loose and otherwise intact. If the defect is serious or you are unsure whether a part is damaged, have a qualified skateboard shop or repair service assess it. The cited guidance gives no universal crack-size threshold or single test that certifies a board as safe.

What a basic adjustment can—and cannot—do
A skateboard tool, also called a skate tool or T-tool, can help adjust and tighten compatible board hardware. It cannot repair a crack in the deck, a broken truck, or a damaged wheel. When replacing a component, check that the new part is compatible with your board; seek qualified help for serious defects.

Make the check part of every ride
The National Safety Council advises inspecting the skateboard before a ride to make sure it is in good working order, and AAOS OrthoInfo says to inspect it before every ride. CPSC’s Skateboarding Safety fact sheet gives the same practical instruction: “Inspect/adjust your board before you ride.” The habit is quick: inspect the board, confirm the hardware and wheels work normally, then check the ground where you plan to ride.
