AST SpaceMobile’s satellite rollout shows schedule pressure: its earlier 2026 deployment plans called for roughly 45 or more satellites in orbit, while the company reported 13 spacecraft in orbit on August 10, 2026. That comparison matters because the constellation must be deployed before AST can build the coverage and capacity it plans to offer through mobile-network partners. The August update did not announce a replacement year-end target or identify one cause for the gap.
How AST’s stated plans compare with reported progress
The dated milestones show why investors should distinguish company targets from completed launches and current in-orbit status. Targets are forward-looking plans, not achieved results.

| Date and source | What AST reported | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| March 2, 2026 — Q4 2025 business update | A target of 45–60 satellites in orbit by the end of 2026, with additional launches expected every one to two months on average. | A company plan for deployment through the end of 2026. |
| May 11, 2026 — Q1 2026 business update | A 2026 target of approximately 45 BlueBird satellites in orbit. AST expected BlueBirds 8–10 to launch in mid-June aboard a Falcon 9. | A later, more specific target; AST also cited launch-provider agreements including Blue Origin and SpaceX. |
| August 10, 2026 — Q2 2026 business update | 13 spacecraft in orbit after BlueBirds 8–13 launched. BlueBirds 14–16 were expected to be ready to ship shortly; BlueBirds 17–46 were in various stages of production and assembly. | A reported status, not a new firm year-end target. Production or shipment readiness is not the same as launch or operational deployment. |
AST’s launch page lists BlueBird 6 launching on December 23, 2025; BlueBird 7 on April 19, 2026; BlueBirds 8–10 on June 17; and BlueBirds 11–13 on August 5. Those completed launches give context to the reported in-orbit count, but do not establish when the next launch will occur.

Satellite deployment is an operational dependency, not merely a headline metric. A slower build can postpone the coverage and capacity AST intends to sell through mobile-network partners, and may affect the timing of service milestones. It does not by itself establish how long any milestone will move or what the eventual financial impact will be.

Keep four milestones separate
- Launch execution: A planned launch window is not a completed launch.
- Manufacturing readiness: A spacecraft in production, assembly, or ready to ship is not necessarily integrated, launched, or operating.
- In-orbit deployment: The relevant count for constellation buildout is spacecraft actually in orbit, not spacecraft under construction.
- Commercialization: A service plan or commercial commitment is not the same as service availability, recognized revenue, or recurring commercial scale.
These distinctions help prevent two common errors in reading company updates: treating factory progress as deployed capacity, and treating a commercial backlog as proof that the network needed to serve it is already in place.
Beta-service plans are not evidence of broad availability
In its August 10 update, AST said it was preparing beta service in 2026 with select strategic partners. The company also described approximately 3,000 initial digital cells activated across the continental United States as progress toward beta service. This is a preparation milestone; the update does not establish that beta service had begun or that broad, mass-market service was available.

AST Chairman and CEO Abel Avellan said the company was “preparing to initiate beta services with select strategic partners” as it got ready to ship BlueBirds 14, 15, and 16 and continued production through BlueBird 46. The statement describes management’s plan and status at that time, not a completed service launch.
What is known about launch timing—and what is not
AST’s BlueBird page cautions that exact orbital launch timing can change because of launch-provider readiness, weather, and other factors. The Q2 update reports launch and production status, but does not identify a single cause for the schedule pressure, give a firm date for the next launch, or state a revised explicit year-end satellite count.

Investors can reasonably infer that deployment was under pressure relative to earlier stated goals. They should not attribute the gap solely to a launch provider, manufacturing, regulation, or another specific cause without a company statement supporting that explanation. The Q2 update also cautions that actual results can differ from forward-looking statements.

AST reported approximately $1.30 billion in aggregate contracted revenue backlog and contract awards in its August 10, 2026 Q2 update. That commercial commitment measure is separate from the number of spacecraft in orbit. It does not establish that the constellation is deployed, that every commitment will convert into recognized revenue, or when any such revenue would be recognized.

For an investor assessment, read the commercial figure alongside operational milestones: completed launches, in-orbit status, manufacturing and shipping progress, and evidence that planned services have actually started. One metric cannot substitute for the others.
