Yes. Steam Frame is designed to stream games from a PC over a wireless connection. Connecting the PC to the router with Ethernet is Valve’s recommended way to improve a Steam Link streaming setup, but Valve’s published Steam Frame information does not make a wired PC connection a requirement.
How the Steam Frame connection works
Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone VR headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam library from a PC. It also supports standalone VR and non-VR experiences. In a PC-streaming setup, the headset uses a wireless link; your PC does not need to be plugged into the headset.

Valve lists Wi-Fi 7 (2×2), dual radios for concurrent 5 GHz Wi-Fi and 6 GHz VR streaming, and an included Wi-Fi 6E wireless adapter for a direct low-latency PC link. These are product specifications, not independent performance measurements. Valve’s Steam Frame product information does not say that Ethernet is required for the PC.

What to connect by Ethernet
If you can run a cable, connect the PC that runs the game to the router, and leave the Steam Frame on Wi-Fi. Valve’s general Steam Link guidance says a wired network provides the best result and recommends Ethernet when the streaming client or setup supports it. That is general Remote Play advice—not a Steam Frame-specific compatibility rule or guarantee. Read Valve’s Steam Link and Remote Play network guidance.

The router itself does not need an Ethernet cable running to the headset. The useful arrangement is a wired PC host and a wireless headset on the local network. The reviewed Valve material does not state that the PC and headset must use a particular router model or that Ethernet is mandatory.
Choose the best connection you already have
| Setup | What it means | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| PC on Ethernet; headset on Wi-Fi | Matches Valve’s general recommendation to wire the streaming host where practical. | Try this first if the router is reachable from the PC. |
| PC and headset on Wi-Fi | Valve’s Steam Frame information does not rule this out, but wireless traffic can compete for airtime. | If streaming is unstable, try Ethernet for the PC before changing other equipment. |
| Headset using the included direct wireless adapter | Valve lists the adapter as an option for a direct low-latency PC link. | Use the connection method that suits your setup; Valve’s product specifications do not establish a measured advantage for every home. |
Wi-Fi band and congestion matter
For general Steam Link streaming, Valve recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi rather than the more congested 2.4 GHz band and warns that simultaneous wireless traffic can interfere. Steam Frame’s listed dual-radio design includes concurrent 5 GHz Wi-Fi and 6 GHz VR streaming, but Valve’s general Steam Link guidance should not be read as a Steam Frame-specific promise about latency or performance.

- Where your network supports it, use a 5 GHz connection for general Steam Link streaming rather than 2.4 GHz.
- Reduce competing wireless activity during a session if you encounter interruptions.
- If the PC is currently on Wi-Fi and the router is accessible by cable, Ethernet is a reasonable setup change to try.
Do you need to buy an Ethernet cable?
Only consider one if your PC currently uses Wi-Fi and you can connect it to the router by cable. Ethernet is Valve’s general recommendation for the host in a Remote Play setup, not a Steam Frame requirement. Valve does not specify a cable category in the cited guidance, so a particular Cat rating should not be treated as necessary for Steam Frame.
