To estimate how long a laptop will last away from an outlet, compare independent battery tests for the exact model and configuration under a workload like yours. Treat a manufacturer’s “up to” figure as a result from particular test conditions—not a promise of all-day runtime.
Start with tests that match how you use a laptop
Battery life is workload-dependent. Web browsing, document work, video streaming, local video playback, gaming, and idle use draw power differently, so their runtimes are not interchangeable. Look for more than one test where possible, then focus on the scenario closest to your typical day.

- Mostly browsing and documents: Look for a connected web-browsing or productivity test, not just local video playback.
- Streaming: Prefer a test that streams over the internet. Local playback avoids some of the work and connectivity involved in streaming.
- Watching downloaded video: A local video playback result may be relevant, but it describes that specific activity rather than a mixed workday.
- Gaming: Find a gaming workload result if available. A light-use test will not tell you how long the laptop lasts under sustained game activity.
Microsoft Learn separates web browsing, streaming, local playback, and idle into distinct screen-on measurement scenarios, and recommends internet access for most scenarios to better resemble typical connected use: Device under test setup for battery-life measurements.
Find the method behind each runtime claim
Manufacturer claims
When a manufacturer advertises “up to” a stated number of hours, look for the conditions behind it: the test method and workload, laptop configuration, screen and power settings, and whether Wi-Fi or other connectivity was enabled. Lenovo notes that advertised runtime depends on test settings, configuration, workload, and usage conditions: How to Evaluate Laptop Battery Life. Without comparable conditions, an advertised maximum cannot be directly set beside an independent reviewer’s result.

Independent reviews
Search for testing of the exact model and hardware configuration you are considering. A product family may offer different processors and displays, and a test of one version does not necessarily describe another. Favor reviewers who explain their procedure and apply it consistently across the laptops they compare. RTINGS, for example, describes its battery test method and distinguishes local video playback from other forms of use: Our Laptop Performance Tests: Battery.
Read the conditions alongside the hours. Check screen brightness, power mode, wireless connectivity, background activity, and the apps or playback method. If the reviewer does not state a condition, do not assume it matches your own setup.

Use battery capacity as context, not a runtime calculator
Battery capacity is commonly listed in watt-hours (Wh). It helps describe how much energy the battery can store, but it does not tell you how many hours the laptop will run by itself. Processor activity, display settings, software, and what you do all affect power use; a larger Wh figure alone does not establish longer runtime. Microsoft Learn describes its Local Video Playback assessment this way: “As part of the Battery Run Down job, the Local Video Playback assessment measures the usage rate of a computer’s battery during full-screen local video playback.” See Microsoft Learn’s Local Video Playback documentation. That result is useful for that playback scenario; it does not, on its own, predict web browsing, streaming, or a mixed workday. Some benchmark profiles report several workload types rather than a single headline number. PCMark 10’s Battery Life Profile includes modern office, applications, video, gaming, and idle: PCMark 10 Battery Life Profile technical guide. These categories help distinguish different use cases, but you still need to check how a particular reviewer configured and ran the test.

For each laptop, record the test and its conditions before comparing the reported hours. A simple comparison table keeps mismatches visible:

| Connectivity and software | Whether internet access and radios were on, what apps or playback method were used, and whether background activity was controlled. |
| Method consistency | Whether the same publisher used the same procedure for both candidates. |
| Battery capacity | Capacity in Wh, if stated; use it as context rather than a substitute for runtime testing. |
Compare the runtime figures only after checking those details. A consistent test from one reviewer is generally more useful for ranking two candidates than two unrelated headline figures, while a workload close to your own use is more useful for estimating your experience.

Make a practical estimate for your own day
- Write down your usual use. Note whether your day is mainly browsing and documents, streaming, video playback, gaming, or a mix.
- Find independent results for the exact configuration. Check that the processor and display options align with the laptop you plan to buy.
- Select the closest workload result. Avoid treating an idle or local-video number as an everyday mixed-use prediction.
- Check the test setup. Compare brightness, power settings, connectivity, background activity, and apps with the way you expect to use the laptop.
- Use capacity only as supporting information. Note the Wh figure if available, but base your estimate on relevant runtime testing.
- Keep uncertainty visible. If the review does not disclose key settings or tests another configuration, regard its result as a rough comparison rather than a precise forecast.
