Then check for an outage, verify your account and connection, restart and update, and escalate to the right provider if needed. This order helps separate a service or network problem from a device fault.
First identify what is failing
“Apple TV” can mean an Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD streaming box, or the Apple TV app installed on a smart TV, streaming device, game console, or other platform. The available settings and fixes differ. Apple provides separate guidance for Apple TV app streaming and Apple TV devices and support.

- Does no video play, or is it just one movie, show, or live event?
- Do other video apps work on the same device?
- Does the same title or app fail on another device using the same Wi-Fi?
If only one title fails, the issue may be specific to that content or provider. If every app fails on one device, focus on that device or its connection. If several devices fail on the same network, start with the network or internet provider.
Check service status and account access
For Apple TV app content, check Apple’s System Status. If you are watching through a third-party service, check that provider’s service status too. If an outage is reported, wait for service to return and try again rather than changing device settings.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
If the issue involves an Apple purchase or subscription, confirm that the Apple TV app is signed in to the Apple Account that has access to it. Resolve any password or verification prompt. If other Apple TV app content plays but one third-party app does not, follow that app’s update and sign-in steps; Apple directs users to contact the developer for help with another streaming app downloaded from the App Store.
Test the internet connection
Try another title, then try the same content on another device connected to the same network. If playback fails on multiple devices, the connection is a stronger lead than the Apple TV alone. Temporarily pause bandwidth-heavy activity—Apple notes that other people using the internet can slow the connection—and retry.

- Try Ethernet if your Apple TV model has an Ethernet port. A wired test can help distinguish a Wi-Fi problem from an issue elsewhere. Ethernet is not available on every model.
- Check router placement. Apple advises keeping Apple TV and the router in the same room when possible, while not placing Apple TV directly on or within 30 cm of the router. Avoid obstructions such as metal surfaces.
If other devices still cannot use the internet after these checks, contact your internet provider.

Buffering and low picture quality can point to a connection that is slow or competing with other network use, rather than a failure to start. Pause heavy internet activity, restart the device, and retry. Also check that the title, device, display, software, and connection support the quality you want.
