How to Change Your WordPress Domain Name Without Losing Traffic

A complete, step-by-step process for changing your WordPress domain while protecting search traffic, links, indexing, and visitor access.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can move a WordPress site to a new domain without permanently sacrificing search traffic, but only if the move is treated as a URL migration rather than a simple domain swap. Build a complete old-to-new URL map, prepare the new site, change WordPress’s URL settings, update stored links safely, publish one-to-one 301 redirects, then use Google Search Console’s Change of Address tool from the old property. Keep the redirects in place for at least 180 days—and preferably at least a year—and judge performance using the combined traffic from both domains.

A short-term decline is normal. Google’s community guidance describes domain moves as gradual and says visibility can fluctuate for months while pages are recrawled and signals are reassigned. The procedure below is designed to prevent avoidable losses such as redirecting every page to the home page, leaving old URLs as 404s, or changing serialized WordPress data with an unsafe database replacement.

What must happen for a safe domain change

A domain migration has four separate jobs: preserve the URL inventory, make the new WordPress installation resolve at the new address, tell browsers and search engines where each old URL moved, and monitor the transition until old-domain requests disappear. Skipping any one of these creates a different failure: missing redirects lose long-tail pages, inconsistent WordPress settings create loops or broken assets, an unsafe search-and-replace can damage serialized options, and judging only the new domain can make a successful migration look like a traffic collapse.

  • Map every important URL. Include pages, posts, categories, media URLs that receive visits, and URL variants such as www and non-www.
  • Prepare the destination first. The new domain needs working hosting, HTTPS, WordPress, and a verified Search Console property before the old site is redirected.
  • Use page-to-page permanent redirects. Each old URL should resolve to its equivalent new URL whenever an equivalent exists.
  • Transfer Google’s site-move signal. Change of Address is for moves between domains or subdomains and is run from the old property after redirects are live.
  • Measure the right baseline. Compare combined organic visits from both domains with the pre-migration baseline, not the new domain by itself.

1. Inventory the old site before touching WordPress

Do not start by editing the WordPress URL fields. First create a spreadsheet or database containing every old URL that could matter. The inventory is your redirect plan and your test list.

Collect URLs from three sources

  1. XML sitemap: Export every URL currently listed in the old site’s sitemap, including separate post, page, category, image, or custom-post-type sitemaps.
  2. Google Search Console: Export URLs from the old property’s page indexing and performance reports. Include pages with impressions even when clicks are low; those pages may be important after the move.
  3. Analytics: Export every URL that received a visit during the last 12 months. A page that is quiet today can still have seasonal or referral traffic.

Normalize the list so each row uses one canonical spelling. Record the complete path and query-string behavior, whether the URL returns a 200, 301, 404, or another status, and the destination URL you intend to use. Add rows for URL forms that users may request directly: HTTP and HTTPS, www and non-www, and the bare domain. The redirect system must account for those variants even if they were not in the sitemap.

Build an old-to-new URL map

For an unchanged page, the path usually remains the same and only the host changes. For a renamed or consolidated page, choose the most relevant replacement rather than sending the visitor to the home page. If no genuinely equivalent page remains, a useful related page is preferable to a deceptive redirect; pages with no suitable destination may need to return a deliberate 404 or 410 instead of creating a site-wide redirect rule.

Inventory item What to capture Why it matters
Old canonical URL Full HTTPS URL and path Provides the source for a redirect and later testing
Search Console URL Pages with impressions, clicks, or indexing issues Protects search-visible URLs that may not appear in analytics
Analytics URL Any URL visited in the previous 12 months Captures seasonal, referral, and low-frequency traffic
New destination Exact matching URL or the closest relevant replacement Prevents blanket home-page redirects
Redirect status Test result and date Shows which mappings still need correction

Take a full backup of the database and files before changing settings. Keep the old hosting and domain active; visitors and crawlers still need to reach the old URLs while the redirects are being tested and for the months that follow.

2. Prepare the new domain, hosting, and HTTPS

Point the new domain at the destination hosting and install or clone WordPress there before switching traffic. Obtain a valid TLS certificate and confirm that the site loads over https:// without certificate warnings. Verify the new domain in Google Search Console before the cutover. If the site has subdomains, verify each relevant property as well.

Keep the destination crawlable during testing, but do not accidentally publish a second, indexable copy for weeks. The important requirement is that the final new URLs resolve correctly and that the old URLs remain available to issue redirects. Check that the database, uploads directory, themes, plugins, and scheduled jobs are present on the new host before changing DNS or WordPress’s address.

3. Change WordPress Address and Site Address

For a standard, single-site WordPress installation, open Settings → General and change both fields:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • WordPress Address (URL): the address where the WordPress core files are installed.
  • Site Address (URL): the public address visitors use.

Enter the complete HTTPS address with no trailing slash, for example https://new.example.com. Save once, then sign in again at the new domain and test the front end, administrator, media library, and a representative post. Leaving one field on the old domain can produce mixed links, login failures, or redirect loops.

When the dashboard fields are inaccessible

You can define the values in wp-config.php before the WordPress bootstrap line:

define('WP_HOME', 'https://new.example.com');
define('WP_SITEURL', 'https://new.example.com');

These constants override the dashboard fields and lock them so they cannot be edited there. They control what WordPress uses at runtime; they do not update the underlying database values. Remove the constants later if you want the URLs editable from Settings → General.

If you used WordPress’s RELOCATE method to regain access during a move, remove the RELOCATE line immediately after the address is corrected. Leaving it enabled is an unnecessary security and configuration risk.

WordPress Multisite is different

The Settings → General procedure applies to a single install. Multisite domain changes require manual database edits and a network-specific plan for the main site, mapped domains, and subsites. Back up the database first and treat each site and subdomain as a separate URL set. Do not apply a single-site tutorial blindly to a network.

4. Replace absolute URLs without corrupting WordPress data

Changing the two address settings does not rewrite every old absolute URL stored in post content, widget settings, plugin options, or theme configuration. Search for the old host in the database and in files, then update only the references that should point to the new domain.

Use a serialization-aware WP-CLI replacement

WP-CLI’s search-replace command understands serialized PHP values, which is important because many WordPress options and page-builder settings store lengths alongside strings. Run a dry run first:

wp search-replace 'https://old.example.com' 'https://new.example.com' --all-tables-with-prefix --skip-columns=guid --dry-run

Review the tables and replacement counts. If the results are correct and you have a current backup, run the same command without --dry-run:

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
wp search-replace 'https://old.example.com' 'https://new.example.com' --all-tables-with-prefix --skip-columns=guid

A blind raw SQL text replacement can corrupt serialized data because the stored string length may no longer match its contents. That is why a serialization-aware tool is preferred. If your site uses multiple old URL spellings—such as HTTP, HTTPS, www, and non-www—perform separate reviewed replacements where appropriate.

Do not change GUIDs

Exclude the guid column. WordPress uses GUIDs as stable identifiers for feeds and other integrations; they are not intended to be rewritten as part of a domain move.

Check files and generated links

  • Search theme files for hard-coded old-domain links, image paths, stylesheet URLs, and JavaScript endpoints.
  • Review .htaccess or equivalent server configuration for rules that still name the old host.
  • Inspect upload paths and plugin options that contain absolute URLs.
  • Regenerate caches after the replacement and clear any CDN cache before testing.
  • Leave normal bloginfo() template calls alone; they generate the site address from WordPress settings and usually do not need manual edits.

Open several posts, pages, attachment URLs, feeds, search results, and forms on the new domain. View the HTML source for canonical tags and internal links; an apparently correct page can still emit an old-domain canonical or asset URL.

5. Implement one-to-one 301 redirects

The redirect layer is the main traffic-preservation mechanism. A 301 tells browsers and search engines that a URL has moved permanently. A 302 is temporary and signals that the old URL should remain the primary address, so it is not the normal choice for a permanent domain migration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Redirect every old URL to its matching new URL

Prefer rules at the web server or CDN because they run before WordPress and remain available even if the application is unavailable. A typical Apache rule for a complete domain move is:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?old.example.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://new.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Adapt the syntax to your host and test it in a staging or controlled window. The rule preserves the path, so /guides/example/ goes to https://new.example.com/guides/example/. Confirm how your server handles query strings; campaign parameters generally should be preserved unless you have a documented reason to remove them.

Account for all variants: HTTP, HTTPS, www, non-www, and the bare domain. The old domain must redirect directly to the final new URL, not first to an intermediate HTTP or www URL. A chain such as old HTTP → old HTTPS → new HTTPS adds latency and creates extra opportunities for failure.

Plugin redirects are an alternative

If server or CDN access is unavailable, a redirect plugin such as Redirection can implement individual mappings. Maintain an export or backup of its rules, and verify that plugin redirects return an actual 301 before relying on them. Application-level redirects are slower than server rules and will fail if WordPress cannot load.

Why a home-page redirect is harmful

Sending every old URL to the home page discards the context that made the old page rank. It also creates a poor visitor experience and can be treated as an irrelevant redirect. Use the URL map to send each page to its closest equivalent; do not replace hundreds of distinct destinations with one catch-all target.

6. Run Google Search Console Change of Address in the right order

Use Change of Address only after the new site works and the old-to-new 301 redirects are live. The tool is for a move between domains or subdomains. It is not needed for an HTTP-to-HTTPS change, a www-to-non-www change on the same domain, or moving pages within one site.

Requirements

  • You must be an owner of both the old and new Search Console properties.
  • Use the same Google account for both properties.
  • The tool operates at domain level, so cover every relevant subdomain variant.
  • Critical pre-checks must pass before the move can be submitted.

Open Search Console for the old property, start Change of Address, select the verified new property, complete the validation checks, and submit. Do not start from the new property: the move is initiated from the old one. If the site uses separate www and non-www properties or several subdomains, repeat the appropriate verification and move process for each variant.

Google’s tool guidance says the move notification remains available for 180 days when critical checks pass. It also says to keep redirects for at least 180 days, and longer when Google Search continues sending requests to old URLs. Google’s broader site-move guidance recommends maintaining redirects for at least a year. In practice, leave them in place indefinitely when the old domain is affordable and still receives meaningful links or traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not chain migrations immediately—for example, old domain A to B and then B to C. Complete and stabilize one move before considering another, because chained moves complicate redirect discovery and the Change of Address process.

7. Update the new site’s SEO signals

After the new domain is live, submit its XML sitemap in the new Search Console property. The sitemap should list the new canonical HTTPS URLs, not the old domain. Update canonical tags, internal links, navigation, XML sitemap references, and any structured configuration that still names the old host.

Check representative pages manually and with a crawler or HTTP client:

  • The new URL returns a successful page response.
  • The old URL returns one direct 301 to the matching new URL.
  • The destination page has a self-consistent canonical URL on the new domain.
  • Internal links and image, CSS, and JavaScript assets use the new address.
  • The sitemap contains only the intended new URLs.

Do not delete the old sitemap and redirect rules immediately after submission. Search engines and users can continue to discover old URLs from external links, bookmarks, search results, and cached documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Monitor traffic, errors, and indexing after launch

Use a combined traffic baseline

For the first weeks and months, add organic traffic from both domains when comparing performance with the pre-migration period. Looking only at the new domain ignores visitors who are still following old search results or links through redirects. Segment by landing page, country, device, and query where your analytics system supports it, but keep the primary comparison consistent with the same dates and seasonal period used for the baseline.

Watch old-domain server logs

Review logs for the old domain for several weeks. Look specifically for 404 responses, redirect loops, unexpected 5xx errors, and high-volume requests for paths absent from your original inventory. Add a direct redirect when a legitimate old URL was missed. Keep checking after the initial launch because less frequently crawled pages can appear later.

Check Search Console reports

Monitor indexing, page performance, and the Change of Address status in both properties. New-domain pages should gradually replace old-domain pages in reporting. A temporary dip does not by itself prove a failed migration; investigate whether the combined traffic, redirect coverage, and crawl errors are improving before rolling back.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Admin redirects repeatedly or will not load WordPress Address and Site Address disagree, or old constants remain Set both URLs to the same HTTPS host, inspect WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL, and remove temporary RELOCATE usage
Pages load but images or styles remain on the old domain Absolute URLs remain in content, options, or theme files Run a reviewed WP-CLI search-replace, inspect hard-coded files, clear caches, and test page source
Every old URL lands on the home page A blanket redirect replaced page-level mappings Replace it with path-preserving or individual 301 rules based on the URL inventory
Redirect testing shows two or more hops HTTP/HTTPS or www normalization is layered incorrectly Make each old variant point directly to the final new HTTPS URL
Search Console Change of Address is unavailable Properties are not both verified by the same account, or the move is not domain-to-domain Verify both domain-level properties and use the tool only for a domain or subdomain move
New pages are indexed with old canonicals Canonical tags or generated settings were not updated Correct the site-wide canonical output, update internal links and sitemap URLs, then request recrawling through normal Search Console workflows
Traffic appears to vanish immediately Only the new domain was measured, or crawlers are still processing the move Combine both domains in the baseline and continue checking redirects, logs, and indexing over the following weeks and months

Final migration checklist

  1. Export URLs from the old sitemap, Search Console page reports, and the last year of analytics.
  2. Create a reviewed old-to-new map, including www, non-www, HTTP, HTTPS, and bare-domain variants.
  3. Back up WordPress files and the database.
  4. Set up the new domain, hosting, HTTPS, WordPress, and Search Console verification.
  5. Change both WordPress URL fields, or temporarily define WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL.
  6. Remove any temporary RELOCATE line and plan separate handling for Multisite.
  7. Run a dry-run WP-CLI search-replace, exclude GUIDs, then perform the reviewed replacement.
  8. Inspect themes, plugins, upload paths, .htaccess, canonicals, internal links, and generated assets.
  9. Publish direct one-to-one 301 redirects from every old variant to its final matching URL.
  10. Verify redirects and destination pages before submitting Change of Address from the old property.
  11. Submit the new sitemap and keep old redirects for at least 180 days, preferably a year or longer.
  12. Monitor combined organic traffic, old-domain logs, 404s, redirect chains, and indexing until the migration stabilizes.

The safest expectation is controlled continuity, not an instant transfer. A complete URL map, technically correct WordPress settings, serialization-safe content updates, direct 301s, correct Search Console sequencing, and patient monitoring address the parts of a domain move that the site owner can control.
