Change V Rising’s castle decay by editing the CastleDecayRateModifier value in the server’s JSON settings. The default is 1.0; set it to 0 to disable castle decay. Stop the server before editing, save the file, restart the server, and verify the result in-game.

Guides disagree about whether the key belongs in ServerGameSettings.json or ServerHostSettings.json. Gameplay rules are generally kept in the game-settings file, so start with ServerGameSettings.json, but search both files if the key is missing. The exact placement can vary by build, hosting panel, or preset.

What CastleDecayRateModifier controls
Castle decay is the rate at which a castle deteriorates after its Blood Essence runs out. CastleDecayRateModifier is a multiplier applied to that decay behavior:
- Lower values slow the loss of a castle.
1.0is the default multiplier.- Higher values make abandoned castles decay faster.
0disables castle decay.
The setting changes the decay rate, not the amount of Blood Essence a castle consumes. A castle can still require Blood Essence to remain powered; the modifier determines what happens when that supply is exhausted.

There are no published, authoritative decay-time statistics in the available material, so do not treat a multiplier as a fixed number of hours or days. The multiplier expresses relative speed rather than a guaranteed timetable.
Find the setting in the right server file
Before changing anything, shut the server down completely. Editing while the process is running can allow the server to rewrite the file when it exits, discarding your change.
Start with ServerGameSettings.json
Most recent guidance places gameplay rules such as castle behavior, loot, PvP and resource rates in ServerGameSettings.json. Open that file in a plain-text editor and search for CastleDecayRateModifier. One documented layout places the key inside the CastleStatModifiers_Global object, alongside settings such as CastleLimit and CastleBloodEssenceDrainModifier.
Check ServerHostSettings.json if necessary
Some guides and community configurations show the same key at the top level beside values such as BuildCostModifier and CraftRateModifier, while other guides place it in ServerHostSettings.json. If a search of ServerGameSettings.json finds nothing, search the host-settings file before creating a new entry. Do not maintain two competing copies unless your hosting software explicitly requires that arrangement; determine which file your current installation actually loads.

Recognize a JSON setting
The value must be a number, not a quoted text string. A valid entry looks like this:
"CastleDecayRateModifier": 0If the key is nested in an object, preserve the surrounding braces and commas. JSON is strict: an extra comma, a missing quote or an unmatched brace can prevent the server from reading the file.
Change the rate on a self-hosted or dedicated server
- Stop the server. Use the normal shutdown command or service control and wait until the server process has exited.
- Back up the settings file. Copy the current JSON file before editing so you can restore the previous configuration if the server rejects the file or a preset overwrites it.
- Open the settings files. Look for
ServerGameSettings.jsonin the server’s save or configuration directory. If the key is absent, inspectServerHostSettings.jsonas well. - Search for the exact key. Use your editor’s search function for
CastleDecayRateModifier. Check the spelling and capitalization; configuration keys are not interchangeable with similarly named settings. - Replace only the numeric value. Use
0for no decay,1.0for the default rate, or another multiplier appropriate for your server. Leave the key name and JSON punctuation intact. - Save the file as JSON. Do not let the editor append a second extension such as
.txt, and do not convert the file into a different format. - Review the difficulty or preset selection. One hosting guide reports that a difficulty preset can override manual edits and recommends entering a custom preset before saving. That behavior is not confirmed by a second source, so treat it as a possibility: if your value keeps reverting, inspect the preset or custom-settings control before assuming the modifier is invalid.
- Start the server again. Allow the server to finish loading before connecting. If it fails to start, restore the backup and correct the JSON syntax or file location.
- Verify in the game. Join the server and check that the castle behaves according to the selected policy. Verification after every restart catches edits made to an unused save, an overwritten preset or the wrong settings file.
Change the rate through a hosting control panel
Many game-server providers publish a dedicated castle-decay control or expose the setting in a configuration editor. The panel route is preferable when it exists because the provider may generate the correct JSON structure and restart the service for you.
- Stop the server from the provider’s control panel.
- Open the server-configuration or game-settings editor.
- Search for
CastleDecayRateModifieror use the panel’s castle-decay control. - Enter the multiplier and save the configuration.
- Check whether the panel applies a preset after saving; a preset can replace hand-edited values on some installations.
- Start or restart the server from the panel.
- Connect to the server and confirm the in-game result.
If the panel does not expose the setting, ask the provider which file it generates rather than editing a downloaded copy that the panel will later replace. A manual edit is useful only when it survives the panel’s save and restart process.

Choose a multiplier for your server
The following ranges are community suggestions, not measurements or official recommendations. Use them as starting points, then adjust after observing how your players use the server.

A zero setting is appropriate when preserving builds is more important than reclaiming abandoned territory. A value above one is useful when inactive castles obstruct expansion or when a seasonal PvP server needs faster turnover. For a mixed community, starting below the default is less disruptive than immediately using a high multiplier, because players have more time to notice an empty Blood Essence reserve and respond.

Self-hosted versus hosted configuration

Troubleshoot a change that does not take effect
The key is not in ServerGameSettings.json
Search the complete file, including nested objects. If the key is genuinely absent, stop and inspect ServerHostSettings.json. The conflicting layouts reported by guides mean that adding the key to an arbitrary location is less reliable than finding the file and structure your build already uses.
The value returns to its old number
Check whether the server starts from a difficulty preset or whether a hosting panel regenerates the file. Save the desired value through the active preset or panel, then restart and inspect the file again. If it changes back immediately, the generated configuration—not the copy you edited—is controlling the server.

The server will not start after saving
Restore the backup, then compare the edited line with the original structure. Look for a missing comma, a stray quote, an unmatched brace or a value entered as words instead of a number. Once the server starts with the backup, make one small change at a time and restart after each change.
The server starts but the castle behaves normally
Confirm that you edited the save currently launched by the server, not a template or an unused world. Verify the exact spelling of CastleDecayRateModifier, make sure the server was fully stopped before the edit, and restart it after saving. Check the active file again after the restart for a preset or panel rewrite.

Ask the provider whether the option is stored under advanced game settings or whether support must apply it. Editing a local download will not help if the provider regenerates its configuration on every restart.

Do not rely solely on a successful server boot. The server can load valid JSON while ignoring a key placed in the wrong file or outside the structure expected by that build.
- Reconnect after the restart rather than testing an old session.
- Check a castle whose Blood Essence status you can observe.
- For a no-decay policy, confirm that the server’s castle behavior matches the intended permanent-world rules after the normal depletion condition occurs.
- For a faster or slower multiplier, monitor the result over the server’s normal play cycle; no authoritative source provides a universal conversion from the multiplier to a precise elapsed time.
- Tell players when the policy changes, especially on a PvP server where the rate affects how quickly inactive bases become available for removal.
Important limitations and planning considerations
Disabling decay does not replace Blood Essence management
CastleDecayRateModifier: 0 prevents the decay process, but the setting is not documented as changing Blood Essence drain. Keep the two controls separate when explaining server rules to players.
High values are a governance choice
Increasing the multiplier can clear inactive bases faster, but it also leaves less time for players who are temporarily away. Publish the value in your server rules and consider warning players before moving from the default to a substantially higher rate.

Keep a dated copy of the working JSON file before experimenting with a new multiplier. If the server software, preset or hosting panel changes the file layout, the backup gives you a known-good configuration to restore.
Treat the file location as build-dependent
Because secondary guides show both settings files and more than one JSON structure, do not assume that a path copied from another server applies to yours. The loaded file, the existing key and the server’s own preset behavior are stronger evidence than a generic guide’s folder name.
