What actually controls the FiveM server icon
FXServer reads the server icon from the server.cfg command load_server_icon. This command tells the server to load a named image and use it as the icon presented to FiveM clients. It is not a resource, a web page setting, or a client-side image. The server process must be able to read the file when it starts.

Requirements before you begin
Gather the following before editing the server:
- Access to the machine or hosting panel that contains your FiveM server files.
- Permission to upload or replace files in the directory containing
server.cfg. - A final image saved as PNG at exactly 96×96 pixels.
- The exact filename, including its uppercase and lowercase letters.
- A planned restart window, because the server needs to read the configuration and image again.
Make a copy of server.cfg before changing it. A backup lets you restore the previous configuration if a typo prevents the server from starting or if you need to compare the old and new lines.
Create a compliant icon
Set the canvas to 96×96 pixels
The required dimensions are exactly 96 pixels wide by 96 pixels high. Both dimensions matter: a 96×95, 128×128, or rectangular image does not meet the documented requirement. Several hosting guides report that other sizes are ignored, and a Cfx.re forum report describes a startup message stating that a server icon is not 96×96 when the dimensions are wrong.
In an image editor, create a square canvas, set width to 96 px and height to 96 px, then export the finished artwork rather than merely resizing the editor window. If you resize an existing logo, inspect the result after resizing so that important lettering or edges have not been cropped.
Save as PNG
Export the file in PNG format. Transparency is allowed, so a transparent background can be used when it suits the logo. Confirm the file extension after export; some operating systems hide extensions and can leave you with a name such as logo.png.jpg or logo.png.png.
Keep the artwork simple enough to remain recognizable at 96 pixels. A high-contrast mark, short text, and clear silhouette generally survive the small canvas better than fine detail. This is design guidance, not an additional FXServer requirement.

Keep the file lean and clean
No official file-size ceiling is established in the available documentation. One forum user reported that an icon was rejected and said the file needed to be 100 kB or less; that is an individual report, not a confirmed universal limit. If your PNG is unusually large, export it again with normal PNG compression and remove unnecessary metadata.
A separate forum report identified Adobe Photoshop metadata in a PNG and suggested re-exporting without metadata when an otherwise valid icon failed. Treat that as a troubleshooting option rather than a formal specification: first verify the dimensions, format, filename, and location.
Upload the PNG beside server.cfg
Put the image in the server’s root or data directory—the same directory that contains server.cfg. The command resolves the filename from the server’s files, so an image stored only on your personal computer or at a remote image URL is not enough.
With a hosting control panel, open the file manager for the server, navigate to the folder where server.cfg is visible, and upload the PNG there. With SSH or another file-transfer method, copy the file into that same folder. The exact path differs by host and operating system; the reliable check is visual or command-line confirmation that both entries are in one directory.

cd /path/to/your/server-data
ls -l server.cfg your-file.pngThe listing should show both files. The path above is an example; use the actual directory for your installation. On Windows, use File Explorer or your panel’s file manager and confirm that server.cfg and the PNG appear together.
Add load_server_icon to server.cfg
Open server.cfg in a text editor and add one line anywhere among the server commands:
load_server_icon "your-file.png"Change only the filename to the name you uploaded. If the file is called CityLogo.PNG, use CityLogo.PNG in the configuration; citylogo.png may fail on case-sensitive systems. Do not add a web address, a drive letter from your own computer, or a path that points outside the server’s files unless your hosting documentation explicitly requires a different layout.
Save the file as plain text. Check that your editor did not add a second extension, convert quotation marks into unusual “smart quotes,” or insert the line inside a commented section. A comment line beginning with a comment character will not execute the command.
If you are replacing an existing icon, edit the existing load_server_icon line rather than leaving several competing lines. Keeping one active command makes it clear which file the server should load. Retain a backup of the old image if you may need to roll back.

Restart FXServer and verify the result
- Save
server.cfgand finish uploading the PNG. - Stop the FiveM server cleanly using the stop or restart control in your panel, or the normal process-management command for your installation.
- Start the server again so FXServer reads the configuration and image from disk.
- Watch the startup console for file and dimension errors.
- Check the server in the FiveM browser after it is online.
- If the browser still shows the previous image, connect directly by IP and inspect the icon there. A forum user notes that the main browser page may not update immediately, and the exact propagation delay is not documented.
Do not treat a stale browser thumbnail alone as proof that the configuration failed. The direct-IP check separates a server-side loading problem from delayed or cached presentation in the public list.
Complete setup checklist
- The image is a PNG, not a JPEG renamed with a PNG extension.
- The pixel dimensions are exactly 96×96.
- The image is in the same directory as
server.cfg. - The name in
load_server_iconmatches the uploaded file character for character, including case. - The command is active, not commented out, and appears only once for the intended icon.
- The file is available to the account that runs FXServer.
- The server was restarted after both the image and configuration were saved.
- You tested by direct IP if the public browser still displayed an old thumbnail.
Troubleshoot an icon that is not showing
Work from the first startup error you can reproduce. Changing several things at once makes it harder to identify the cause.

Filename and case checks
Filename errors are especially common when a panel displays a friendly name but the underlying file has a different case or extension. Copy the name directly from the file manager when possible. Compare characters such as hyphens, underscores, spaces, and numbers. If you want to eliminate ambiguity, use a short lowercase name such as servericon.png and update the configuration to match.
Directory checks
Large server installations can contain multiple data folders and more than one configuration file. The file must be beside the server.cfg that the running FXServer process actually loads. If your panel has separate development and production instances, verify the instance selected in the start command before editing files.

Remote-image checks
Do not paste an Imgur or other image-hosting link into load_server_icon. A forum report describes Imgur blocking this use, and remote hosting introduces an additional dependency. Hosting the PNG locally avoids that failure mode and follows the documented command’s file-based behavior.

Changing the icon later
To update the artwork, create another compliant 96×96 PNG, upload it beside server.cfg, replace the filename in the existing load_server_icon line, and restart. You can also overwrite the existing file while keeping the same name, then restart; using a new filename can make it easier to confirm that the active configuration points to the intended asset.
Keep old versions outside the active directory or give them distinct names so that only one image is referenced. After every change, perform the same startup and direct-IP verification rather than relying solely on a browser thumbnail.
What your hosting provider needs to support
The procedure is the same whether you run the server on your own machine or through a hosting panel. A provider must give you a way to edit server.cfg and upload a file into the directory that contains it. Panels that expose only resource folders, or that prevent access to the server data directory, cannot complete this method until the provider grants the required access.
For readers choosing a host, Godlike.Host’s FiveM servers use its own game panel with SFTP/FTP access, so you can upload the PNG beside server.cfg and edit the configuration. It is not on Cfx.re’s list of authorized FiveM hosts (fivem.net, 10 Oct 2026).
Panel labels vary, so look for functions named File Manager, Startup, Configuration, Console, Restart, or similar. Do not assume that a panel’s “server icon” field is authoritative unless it ultimately writes the documented load_server_icon setting and places the PNG where FXServer can read it.
Security and operational precautions
- Use an image you have permission to distribute on a public server listing.
- Keep the PNG free of private information in visible artwork or metadata.
- Back up
server.cfgbefore editing, especially on a production server. - Restart during a maintenance window because players will be disconnected.
- Record the filename and dimensions in your deployment notes so another administrator can reproduce the setup.
The reliable method in one sequence
- Export a square PNG at exactly 96×96 pixels.
- Upload it to the directory containing the active
server.cfg. - Add or update
load_server_icon "filename.png". - Save the configuration and restart FXServer.
- Read the startup console, then verify by direct IP if the public browser thumbnail has not refreshed.
This explicit local-file configuration is the supported path for setting a FiveM server icon. It avoids the unreliable automatic-icon.png assumption and gives you clear checks for dimensions, filename, location, and restart state.
