To change a Minecraft server’s view or simulation distance, stop the server, edit the relevant setting in server.properties, save the file, and restart the server. View distance controls how much terrain the server sends to players; simulation distance controls how far away the server runs game logic. The settings affect different resources, so changing the right one matters when you are trying to improve performance.

What the two distance settings control

These settings are related, but they are not interchangeable. Lowering view distance can reduce the amount of terrain sent to players. Lowering simulation distance limits how far away active game systems run. If the problem is slow TPS, simulation distance is the more directly relevant setting; if the concern is memory or bandwidth, view distance is the more directly relevant one.

A server with many active farms or redstone systems may be more sensitive to simulation distance than one with little activity.
Change the settings in server.properties
The reliable method covered by the available server guides is to edit the server configuration and restart. Chat commands are not established as a dependable way to change these settings, so use the file method rather than relying on an unverified command.

- Stop the server. Use the stop control in your hosting panel or your normal server shutdown method. If your host provides a file manager and supports editing while the server is running, stopping first is still the safer route because it avoids editing a configuration the server may currently be using.
- Open the server files. In your hosting panel’s file manager, locate
server.propertiesin the server’s main directory. If you manage the server yourself, open that file in a plain-text editor. - Find the property you want to change. Look for
view-distance=and, on a server version that supports it,simulation-distance=. Change the number after the equals sign. For example, a setting might appear asview-distance=8. Use a value accepted by your specific edition and version; the range is not reliably established across the available sources. - Save the file and restart the server. A saved edit does not take effect until the server loads the configuration again. Restart through your host panel or your usual server startup process.
- Check the result in play. Assess the affected issue after the restart. If you changed view distance, check how much terrain players can see and whether memory or network load changes. If you changed simulation distance, check whether distant farms, mobs, or redstone activity are still within the range you need and whether tick performance improves.
Which value should you change?
If terrain is not visible far enough
Adjust view-distance. A lower value means less terrain is sent to each client, which may reduce memory and bandwidth use but also makes the visible world smaller. Choose a change that addresses the performance constraint without cutting off more of the world than players need.
If the server is struggling to keep up with ticks
Consider lowering simulation-distance. Game logic such as mob behavior, crop growth, redstone, fluids, and hoppers runs within the simulated area, so reducing that area can reduce CPU work per tick. The trade-off is that activity farther from players may no longer run as it did at a higher setting.

If you need to preserve both visibility and nearby activity
Change one setting at a time and observe the result before changing the other. This makes it easier to tell whether the change addressed the actual bottleneck. A higher view distance does not by itself establish that distant chunks will run game logic; that is the role of simulation distance.
Defaults and ranges: check your edition and version
Published ranges and defaults are inconsistent, and the available figures do not establish a universal value for every current server version. Treat them as reports, not guaranteed limits. Check the documentation for your exact server software and version before entering a boundary value.

Do not transfer a single-player value to a dedicated server without checking the server’s documentation. One hosting guide reports a different single-player scale and default, but that report is unverified and does not establish dedicated-server behavior.
One guide also claims simulation distance may be clamped to view distance—for example, simulation distance 10 with view distance 8 becoming 8. That behavior is not confirmed here, so do not rely on the example as a rule. If the effective distance appears lower than the configured value, check the documentation for your server software and version.

Java and Bedrock are not the same configuration
The property names discussed above are associated with Java server configuration. Bedrock documentation describes render distance and a separate tick-distance setting, so do not assume that Bedrock uses the same property names or accepts the same values. The exact file entries and controls can depend on the Bedrock server version and hosting setup; confirm them in that version’s documentation before editing.
Likewise, hosting panels may present file editing differently. The essential process remains to identify the right server configuration, change the supported setting, save, and restart. If the panel exposes configuration controls instead of a file manager, use the host’s instructions for those controls rather than creating a second or conflicting configuration.
Common problems after changing a distance
- The change has no effect: confirm you edited the active server’s
server.properties, saved the file, and restarted the server. Make sure the property name is spelled correctly and the number follows the equals sign. - The server will not start or does not accept the value: restore the previous value, then verify the permitted range for the exact server edition and version. The reported ranges conflict, so a value accepted by one setup may not be accepted by another.
- TPS has not improved: view distance primarily affects terrain sent to clients and is associated with memory and bandwidth costs. If CPU work per tick is the issue, inspect simulation distance instead, while considering the impact on distant game activity.
- Farms or other systems behave differently at a distance: review simulation distance. It controls the range in which chunks run the listed game logic, so lowering it can change whether distant activity continues.
- The configured numbers appear inconsistent: do not assume the server silently clamps one setting to the other. Check the documentation for your implementation and version; the claimed clamp behavior is unverified.
Should you use a command instead?
There is no confirmed command in the available evidence that reliably changes either setting on a server. One guide reportedly suggests a live command, while another says the setting is not a gamerule; the command text and behavior are not established. Editing server.properties and restarting is the dependable procedure described here.
