The way you change a Minecraft skin depends on the edition. In Minecraft: Java Edition, you upload an image from your Minecraft profile page or from the Launcher’s Skins tab, then choose the Wide (classic) or Slim model. In Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, you make the change in Dressing Room, where you equip Character Creator items, classic skins, or content obtained from Marketplace. The menus are not interchangeable, so identify the edition shown in your Launcher or title screen before following any steps.

First, identify your Minecraft edition
Java and Bedrock are separate editions with different account menus and skin systems. A missing button usually means that instructions for the other edition are being followed.

- Java Edition is distributed through Minecraft.net for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its custom-skin workflow is an image upload handled on your profile page or in the Java section of Minecraft Launcher.
- Bedrock Edition is available on Windows, consoles, mobile devices, Chromebook, VR headsets, and other platform-specific stores. Its skin controls are in Dressing Room, not in the Java profile upload page.
On a computer, open the Launcher and read the edition name beside the game you are about to start. On another device, check the edition name on the title screen or in the platform’s installed game listing. If the screen says Bedrock, use the Dressing Room instructions below. If it says Java Edition, use one of the upload methods.
Change a Java skin from your Minecraft profile
The profile method is useful when you want to upload a custom image without first opening a game world. It changes the Java skin associated with your profile.

Upload the image in a browser
- Open your Minecraft profile page and choose Change Skin.
- Under the model choices, select Classic for the standard, wide-armed model or Slim for the narrow-armed model.
- Scroll to Upload Custom Skin.
- Select Select File, browse to the skin image on your device, and choose it.
- Select Upload to apply the image to the selected model.
The model choice matters. A skin drawn for slim arms can look incorrect when assigned to the standard model, and a standard-model skin can look misaligned on slim arms. Select the model that matches the file you intend to use before uploading rather than trying to correct the appearance in-game.
Confirm that the change reached the game
After uploading, start Java Edition while signed in with the same account used on the profile page. If an already-open game does not show the new appearance immediately, leave the game and start it again so it can load the current profile data. Check the selected model as well as the image: a correct file paired with the wrong model can appear to be a failed upload.
Change a Java skin in Minecraft Launcher
The Launcher provides the same basic result with a separate saved-skin entry. This route is convenient if you switch among several images.
Create and equip a saved skin
- Open Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Open the Skins tab.
- Select New Skin.
- Enter a name for the skin so you can recognize it later.
- Choose Wide or Slim. Wide corresponds to the standard/classic model used in the profile workflow.
- Select Browse and choose the skin image from your device.
- Select Save & Use.
The saved entry remains available in the Launcher’s Skins tab, allowing you to return to it instead of browsing for the same file again. If the image is accepted but the character’s arms look wrong, edit or recreate the entry with the other model setting and save it again.

Java version compatibility for Slim arms
The official Java guidance notes that Slim arms are fully supported in version 1.8 and later. Older versions can display black pixels on slim arms even when the uploaded image and model selection are otherwise correct. If you must run an older Java version, use the standard/wide model or expect that limitation; changing the image alone will not add Slim support to that version.

Classic and Wide describe the same standard body shape in their respective interfaces. Slim is a different arm shape, not a separate type of account or a Bedrock feature. Java versions before 1.8 may render Slim arms with black pixels, while version 1.8 and later fully support them according to the official guidance.

Dressing Room is exclusive to Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. It is the central place for character slots, Character Creator items, and classic skins.
Equip Character Creator items
- Start Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.
- Select Dressing Room from the main menu.
- Select an existing character slot, or create a new slot.
- Select Edit Character.
- Open the Body or Style tab.
- Browse to the item you want, select it, and choose Equip.
Character Creator customization is assembled from item categories rather than uploaded as one Java-style image. Use the character slot to keep a particular combination available, then edit that slot whenever you want to replace an item. The exact arrangement of categories can vary by device and game update, but the route remains Dressing Room, character slot, Edit Character, then Body or Style.

Equip a classic Bedrock skin
- Open Dressing Room.
- Select the character slot you want to change.
- Select Edit Character.
- Choose Classic Skins in the left navigation.
- Select the classic skin you want.
- Choose Equip.
Classic skins and Character Creator items are different systems. The official Bedrock instructions state that a classic skin cannot be customized with Character Creator items. If you need to use an item from Body or Style, choose a Character Creator character rather than trying to layer it onto a classic-skin selection.
Use Bedrock Marketplace skins and other owned content
Marketplace content is obtained and managed inside Bedrock. A purchase or prior entitlement does not automatically mean that the item is currently downloaded or equipped.

Find and download content you already own
- Launch Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.
- Select Marketplace.
- Open My Library.
- Look in Owned or Marketplace Pass, depending on how the content was obtained.
- Find the skin or pack and choose Download when that option is shown.
- When the item is available, choose Equip if offered, or open Dressing Room and select it from the appropriate side-menu section.
For a character customization item, the final selection happens in Dressing Room. Marketplace is where you locate the entitlement and download it; Dressing Room is where you select the resulting skin, character, or item for use.
If a Marketplace skin is not listed
Return to Marketplace, open My Library, and check both Owned and Marketplace Pass. This is the documented place to verify that the item belongs to the signed-in account and is available to download. Only after it appears there should you try to equip it in Dressing Room. If the item is present but not usable, confirm that the game is using the account that owns it and that the download has completed.

Can you use the same skin on Java and Bedrock?
The two editions do not share one skin-changing interface. Java accepts an uploaded image tied to a selected Wide or Slim model, while Bedrock equips classic skins or builds a character from Dressing Room items. Therefore, a Java upload does not become a Bedrock Dressing Room item simply because both games use the same account.

The documented workflows do not promise automatic conversion, automatic Marketplace ownership, or automatic synchronization of a Java upload into Bedrock.
When troubleshooting a claim that a skin “works on both,” first ask which edition the instructions target and whether the creator provided a Bedrock classic-skin version or only a Java image. Then follow the matching interface rather than looking for the other edition’s controls.
Troubleshooting skin changes
There is no Dressing Room button
Verify the edition before changing settings. Dressing Room is identified by the official guide as a Bedrock-only feature. If the title screen or Launcher shows Java Edition, use the profile-page or Launcher Skins workflow instead. If you expected Bedrock, return to the Launcher or platform library and start the Bedrock installation, not the Java installation.
The Java upload is accepted but the character looks wrong
- Check whether the image was assigned to Classic/Wide or Slim as intended.
- If the arms look incorrect, create or edit the skin entry with the other model selection and save it again.
- Check the game version. Slim arms are fully supported from version 1.8 onward; older versions can show black pixels on Slim arms.
- Restart the Java game after saving so it loads the updated profile data.
The Launcher does not show the skin I just uploaded
Make sure the Launcher is on Minecraft: Java Edition, then open the Skins tab and look for the named entry created with New Skin. If you used the browser route, the profile upload and the Launcher list are two access points to Java skin management; verify that the same account is signed in and that the model selection matches the image.

A classic Bedrock skin will not accept a Character Creator item
This is expected behavior rather than an upload failure. The official Bedrock instructions state that classic skins cannot be customized with Character Creator items. Select a Character Creator character slot when you need Body or Style items, or keep the classic skin as its own selection.
A Marketplace item is missing from Dressing Room
Do not search only through the character editor. Open Marketplace > My Library and check Owned and Marketplace Pass. Download the item if necessary, then return to Dressing Room and use the side menu to locate the relevant category. This separates entitlement and download problems from equipment problems.
The menu labels do not match these instructions
Platform and update differences can change the placement of controls. Look for the edition name first, then use the closest documented path: Java profile or Launcher Skins; Bedrock Dressing Room; Marketplace content through My Library. Do not substitute a Java menu for a Bedrock one merely because both games are signed into the same account.
