HAProxy is a high-performance TCP and HTTP load balancer and reverse proxy. It accepts client connections, applies routing and policy rules, and sends traffic to an appropriate server in a backend pool. It can balance encrypted connections without decrypting them, terminate TLS at the edge, or create a new encrypted connection to backend servers. The right design depends on protocol, workload duration, server capacity, session state, failure behavior, and where you need traffic visibility.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What HAProxy does
HAProxy sits between clients and one or more application servers. Clients connect to HAProxy instead of directly to an individual server. HAProxy then chooses a backend server, forwards the connection or request, returns the response, and keeps the server pool available as conditions change.

- TCP mode: HAProxy balances an entire connection. It can inspect connection-level information such as source address or TLS SNI, but it does not make a new decision for every HTTP request inside an established connection.
- HTTP mode: HAProxy understands HTTP requests and can route using paths, headers, cookies, methods, hostnames, and other Layer 7 information. This allows request-level decisions, but it requires HAProxy to process the HTTP protocol.
HAProxy can also terminate TLS, pass encrypted traffic through to a server, or establish TLS on the backend hop. Those choices affect certificate management, routing visibility, end-to-end encryption, and health-check configuration.
The frontend–rules–backend model
Frontend: where traffic enters
A frontend binds to a listening address and port, such as a public HTTP, HTTPS, or TCP endpoint. It accepts client connections and establishes the context in which rules are evaluated. A deployment may use separate frontends for public web traffic, internal services, databases, or administrative protocols.

Rules: how HAProxy decides
Rules can inspect protocol data, HTTP headers, TLS SNI, source attributes, server state, and runtime information. For example, a rule can send requests for one hostname to one backend and requests for another hostname to a different pool. In TCP mode, rules generally choose a destination for the connection; in HTTP mode, they can act on individual requests.
Backend: the server pool and policy
A backend defines the available servers, their addresses and ports, health checks, connection limits, and balancing method. It is also where you express operational behavior such as whether a server is temporarily disabled, how many connections it may accept, and what happens when all healthy servers are busy or unavailable.
This separation makes troubleshooting more systematic: first verify that the frontend receives traffic, then confirm that rules select the intended backend, and finally inspect server health, queues, limits, and responses inside that backend.

How HAProxy chooses a server
No balancing algorithm is universally fastest. Select one by examining how uniform the work is, how long connections or requests remain open, whether servers have equal capacity, whether application state is local to a server, and whether a client must return to the same destination.
| Algorithm | How it works | Best fit | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round robin | Assigns successive turns to servers in rotation. | Similar servers handling requests with broadly similar cost and duration. | It does not account for a server that is already carrying longer or heavier work. |
| Weighted round robin | Gives servers more or fewer turns according to configured weights. | Pools containing machines with unequal capacity. | Weights must reflect reality and may need adjustment as workloads change. |
| Least connections | Prefers the server with fewer active connections. | Connections have different durations or remain open for a long time. | A connection count is only a proxy for work; one connection may be much more expensive than another. |
| Hashing or consistent hashing | Maps a key, such as a client, URL, or cookie, to a server. | Affinity for stateful sessions, caches, or repeat access to the same data. | Changing pool membership can remap keys and reduce flexibility. Bounded-load consistent hashing is documented in the current HAProxy manual. |
Use weighted algorithms when hardware differs, least connections when connection duration varies, and hashing only when affinity has a concrete benefit. If an application stores session state centrally, ordinary round robin may be simpler and more resilient than forcing stickiness.
Health checks and failure handling
HAProxy uses active checks that periodically connect to a server or send a protocol-specific request. When consecutive checks fail to reach the configured failure threshold, HAProxy removes that server from the balancing rotation. After the configured number of successful checks, it returns the server to service. HAProxy Technologies summarizes the purpose directly: “Health checks ensure that only healthy servers are kept in the load balancing rotation.”

Port checks versus application checks
A check that only opens a TCP connection confirms that something is listening on the port. It does not prove that the application can serve a valid response, read its configuration, or reach a dependency such as a database. An HTTP check can send a method to a selected path and require an expected status or response content. Checks can also use SNI, TLS, HTTP/2, and other protocol settings so that the probe follows the same important path as real traffic.
Designing useful thresholds
- Choose a check path that exercises the dependency whose failure would make the server unsuitable, but avoid an endpoint that performs expensive or destructive work.
- Use conservative failure and recovery thresholds. A single transient packet loss should not repeatedly remove and restore a server, a condition commonly called flapping.
- Make the probe’s protocol match production traffic. A TLS service should be checked with the expected TLS settings, and a hostname-routed service should receive the relevant SNI or Host value.
- Monitor both check results and application responses. A server can pass a shallow port test while returning errors to users.
Passive checks
Passive checks react to errors observed during normal traffic, including TCP failures or HTTP errors. They complement active checks by detecting a problem while users are being served. Passive observation should not replace a well-designed active probe: without requests, there may be nothing to observe, and an active check can detect a failure before a large number of clients encounter it.
TLS termination, passthrough, and re-encryption
| Topology | What happens | Advantages | Limitations and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terminate TLS at HAProxy | HAProxy presents the certificate, decrypts traffic, and usually forwards HTTP to the backend. | Centralizes certificates and enables HTTP-aware routing, logging, and policy decisions. | The HAProxy-to-backend hop is not encrypted unless separately configured. Certificate renewal and private-key protection become edge responsibilities. |
| TCP passthrough | HAProxy forwards the encrypted connection without decrypting it. | Preserves encryption visibility to the backend and can support end-to-end TLS ownership by the application. | HAProxy cannot inspect HTTP paths, headers, or response content. Routing is limited to connection-level information such as SNI. |
| Terminate and re-encrypt | HAProxy decrypts the client side, then establishes a new TLS connection to the backend. | Combines HTTP-aware edge routing with encryption on the second hop. | Backend certificates, certificate verification, SNI, cipher compatibility, and health-check TLS settings must all be configured correctly. |
Choose the topology according to trust boundaries and routing needs rather than treating TLS termination as automatically better. If HAProxy must route by URL or header, it needs HTTP visibility. If the backend must retain direct control of the client TLS session, passthrough is more appropriate. Re-encryption is useful when traffic crosses a network segment that should not carry plaintext.

Session affinity and state
Load balancing is easiest when any server can handle any request. If an application keeps session data only in local memory, a user may need to return to the same server. Hashing a stable key or using a cookie-based affinity rule can provide that behavior, but affinity concentrates traffic and makes failures more disruptive: when the preferred server disappears, sessions may be remapped or lost.

Yes, but the architecture matters. HAProxy ALOHA global server load balancing can return a datacenter address based on client geography and datacenter health. When a location is unavailable, its address can be removed from DNS responses.
Best Value
DNS-based global balancing has an unavoidable timing limitation: resolvers and clients cache DNS answers. A client may continue using an old datacenter address until the response’s time-to-live expires, even after the address has been withdrawn. Lowering the TTL can improve change speed but increases DNS query volume and does not guarantee immediate replacement because intermediate caches may honor their own behavior.
| Approach | Strength | Constraint |
|---|---|---|
| DNS-based global balancing | Can select a geographically appropriate datacenter and remove unavailable locations from new DNS answers. | Failover is constrained by DNS caching and TTL expiry. |
| One regional HAProxy layer | Centralizes routing decisions and can react immediately once traffic reaches the proxy. | Clients must first reach that region, adding latency for distant users and creating a larger regional dependency. |
Use global balancing when geographic latency, datacenter failover, or regulatory placement justifies the additional operational complexity. Document the expected DNS convergence time and test what happens to clients that retain an older address.

Operational practices that prevent outages
Validate before reloading
Run configuration validation before every reload and treat a failed validation as a deployment failure. Keep the last known-good configuration available so a bad change can be reverted quickly. A reload process should be tested under live traffic, including connection draining and behavior of long-lived sessions.
Make behavior observable
- Use structured logs that identify the frontend, backend, selected server, termination state, timing, status, and connection errors.
- Inspect health-check status, failure reasons, rise and fall transitions, queue depth, active connections, and response errors.
- Enable runtime statistics and use the administrative interface or CLI to examine server state without waiting for a new deployment.
- Alert on sustained queues, repeated health transitions, exhausted connection limits, and elevated backend errors rather than only on process availability.
Account for version-sensitive features
Recent HAProxy release material describes improvements involving thread-group-aware algorithms, queues, stick tables, peers, HTTP behavior, TLS configuration, CLI capabilities, and tracing. These features and their exact configuration syntax are version-sensitive. Check the manual for the version actually deployed before relying on a capability, and keep configuration examples tied to that version in change documentation.
Capacity, latency, and realistic performance expectations
HAProxy is designed for high performance, but there is no meaningful universal throughput number. Results depend on hardware, protocol mode, TLS cipher and certificate work, payload size, concurrency, connection reuse, logging, rules, health checks, and backend behavior. A benchmark that omits those conditions cannot predict your deployment.
Measure the complete path: connection establishment, TLS handshakes, request processing, queue time, backend response time, and error recovery. Test ordinary traffic and failure cases, including one backend disappearing, all servers reaching connection limits, and a reload while long-lived connections remain open.
Quick Recap
A practical design checklist
- Identify the protocol and decide whether routing needs connection-level information or HTTP request visibility.
- Define the frontend address, TLS boundary, and trust relationship between clients, HAProxy, and backends.
- List backend servers, capacity differences, connection limits, and the application state each server holds.
- Select an algorithm using workload duration, capacity, and affinity requirements rather than habit.
- Implement an application-level health check with matching protocol, hostname, SNI, and TLS settings.
- Set failure and recovery thresholds that tolerate brief network problems without allowing a broken server to serve traffic for too long.
- Decide whether backend traffic needs re-encryption and configure certificate verification where required.
- Instrument logs, runtime statistics, queues, health transitions, and backend errors before the system goes live.
- Validate, reload, roll back, and test failover procedures regularly.
- If using multiple datacenters, document DNS TTL behavior and test stale-address scenarios.
Key takeaways
- HAProxy is both a TCP/HTTP load balancer and a reverse proxy, with TLS termination and initiation capabilities.
- Frontends receive traffic, rules make routing decisions, and backends define servers, checks, limits, and algorithms.
- Algorithm choice follows workload shape, server capacity, state, and affinity needs; no single method wins everywhere.
- Application-aware health checks provide stronger protection than merely checking whether a port is open.
- TLS termination, passthrough, and re-encryption offer different balances of visibility, certificate control, and hop-by-hop protection.
- Global DNS balancing improves geographic selection but cannot eliminate delays caused by cached DNS answers.
