To change a Hytale server’s message of the day, stop the server, edit the MOTD value in the server’s root config.json, save valid JSON, and restart the server. The stock value is an empty string: "MOTD": "". For example, "MOTD": "Welcome to my server!" sets the message for players who join after the restart.

The root file is the one beside the server’s mods/ and universe/ directories. A world-specific universe/worlds/<name>/config.json is a different file and does not replace the server-wide MOTD.

What the Hytale server MOTD controls
The MOTD is the message associated with the running server when players join. It is controlled by the uppercase MOTD key in the server’s root configuration file. The default is an empty string, so a newly configured server can have no message until you enter one.
Changing this value is a configuration edit, not a command that is guaranteed to apply while the process is running. Stop the server before editing, then restart it after saving. Players who join after that restart receive the new text.

Where is the MOTD in Hytale config.json?
Look in the top-level directory of the Hytale server installation. The correct file is:
config.json
That file is at the same level as directories such as:

Do not open a world directory first. Per-world rules are stored under universe/worlds/<name>/config.json; editing that file is not the normal way to set the server-wide message of the day.
If your host presents files through a control panel rather than a file browser, use the panel’s Hytale settings page described below. The field still writes the same server setting, even when you do not see the JSON directly.
How to change Hytale server MOTD in the root file
- Stop the server. Shut it down from the console or hosting panel and wait until the panel reports that it is offline. Editing while it is running risks the process writing its current configuration back over your change.
- Open the root
config.json. Confirm that the file is besidemods/anduniverse/, rather than inside a world folder. - Find the
MOTDproperty. The stock entry is"MOTD": "". Keep the property name in uppercase. - Replace only the value. For a welcome message, use
"MOTD": "Welcome to my server!". Keep the surrounding double quotation marks. - Save the file as JSON. Do not add a trailing comma, remove a comma that separates neighboring properties, or leave an unclosed quotation mark.
- Start or restart the server. The changed message is available to players who join after this restart.

}In a real configuration file, other properties will appear before or after this entry. Preserve them; change the text between the value’s quotation marks.

Keep the JSON valid
Hytale can only read the setting if the complete configuration remains valid JSON. A single missing comma, an extra comma, a curly quotation mark, or an unclosed quote can prevent the file from loading correctly. If the server refuses to start or the MOTD remains unchanged after a restart, validate the entire file with a JSON validator such as JSONLint before trying again.
Common editing mistakes
- Using single quotes: JSON strings require straight double quotes, as in
"MOTD": "Welcome". - Adding a trailing comma: The last property in an object cannot end with an extra comma.
- Deleting a separator: If another property follows
MOTD, the entries need the comma that separates them. - Pasting formatted text: Replace curly quotation marks with ordinary keyboard double quotes.
- Editing a partial download: Validate the complete
config.json, not only the line containingMOTD.
Make a backup copy of the original file before editing. If the edited file causes a startup problem, stop the server, restore the backup, and then reapply the change carefully.
Hosting-panel instructions
Panel labels and layouts can change with provider updates, but the setting is still the Hytale server MOTD. The following paths describe the interfaces documented for the 2026-10-14 configuration snapshot.

If your panel does not use these names, look for Hytale server settings, properties, or a configuration-file editor. Do not create a second MOTD entry in an unrelated file simply because the menu names differ.
Restart behavior and who sees the new message
A save operation alone is not enough for the stock setting. The server reads the configuration when it starts, so perform a full restart after saving. The practical check is to connect with a player account after the restart. The new MOTD is intended for players who join after that point.

If you changed the file while the server was still running, stop it and verify the file again before restarting. A running instance may have retained the old value or may have rewritten its configuration during shutdown.
Hytale MOTD not showing: a troubleshooting path
When the message does not appear, check the causes in this order. Each one corresponds to a different failure mode, so changing the text repeatedly without checking the file and restart state will not solve the underlying problem.
1. The server was not restarted
Confirm that the process actually stopped and started after you saved the setting. A panel’s Save button is not necessarily a restart. Use the panel’s Restart control, or stop the server completely and start it again.
2. The wrong player session was used for testing
Connect after the restart rather than relying on a session that was already connected. The documented behavior applies to players who join after the server has loaded the new configuration.

Check the path. The server-wide setting belongs in the root config.json, next to mods/ and universe/. A file at universe/worlds/<name>/config.json contains per-world rules and is not the root MOTD setting.

4. The JSON is invalid
Run the complete file through a JSON validator. Look especially for a missing or extra comma, unmatched quotation marks, or smart quotes inserted by a rich-text editor. Correct the syntax, save, and restart again.
5. The message is being confused with Server Discovery text
Server Discovery does not display the MOTD. The server-list text comes from the description in the server profile associated with the Hytale account. To change what appears in that listing, edit the profile description instead of the root config.json MOTD.
6. A plugin is controlling the visible message
A third-party MOTD plugin can provide its own workflow, including live edits or a command such as /motd reload. That is separate from the stock configuration key. If such a plugin is installed, follow its documented reload procedure and check whether it is replacing the text supplied by the root file.
Server MOTD versus Server Discovery description
These two pieces of text serve different purposes:
- Server MOTD: the
MOTDvalue in the rootconfig.json, loaded when the server starts and shown to players who join after the restart. - Server Discovery description: the description in the server profile associated with the Hytale account, used for the server-list presentation.
Changing one does not change the other. If your new wording appears when players connect but the old wording remains in Server Discovery, the profile description is the field that needs editing.
Root configuration versus per-world configuration
Hytale servers can contain configuration at more than one level. The root file governs server-wide settings such as the stock MOTD entry described here. A world’s own file is located at universe/worlds/<name>/config.json and is intended for rules specific to that world.
Before saving, inspect the path shown by your file manager or panel. A familiar filename is not enough: two files can both be called config.json while affecting different scopes. If an edit to a world file produces no change to the join message, return to the root file.
Using a plugin for live MOTD changes
Some third-party MOTD plugins advertise live editing and a reload command. For example, a CurseForge “Message of the Day” mod may expose /motd reload. This is a plugin workflow rather than a replacement for the stock key.

Use a plugin only when you specifically need its additional behavior and have confirmed that it supports your Hytale server version. Keep the distinction clear when troubleshooting: a plugin may store its own message, while the unmodified server reads MOTD from the root config.json during startup.
Safe editing checklist
- Stop the server before opening the file.
- Back up the existing root
config.json. - Verify that the path is beside
mods/anduniverse/. - Change the existing uppercase
MOTDvalue instead of creating a duplicate key. - Use straight double quotes and valid JSON commas.
- Validate the complete file if anything looks unusual.
- Save, restart, and test by joining afterward.
- If the server-list wording is the issue, edit the account profile description instead.
What the available guidance does not establish
The documented setup confirms the key name, default empty value, restart requirement, file location, and the difference between MOTD and Server Discovery text. It does not establish a character limit for the message or confirm which formatting codes are supported. Treat those details as version-dependent rather than assuming that color codes, line breaks, or unlimited text will work.
Panel menu names and the arrangement of the server configuration can also change as Hytale and hosting dashboards are updated. If a menu has moved, locate the equivalent Hytale server properties or root configuration editor and apply the same file-level change.
The Bottom Line
Edit the uppercase MOTD value in the root config.json, keep the file valid, and restart the server. If the message still does not appear, first check the restart, the file path, and whether you are actually trying to change the separate Server Discovery profile description.
