What “change modpack version” actually changes
A modpack version is a published build of a collection of mods, configuration files, scripts, and often a specific Minecraft and mod-loader combination. Switching the pack version is different from changing only the base Minecraft version in an instance. A launcher may need to replace many files, not just one game-version value.

The author must also have published the target build: if no file exists for that Minecraft or pack version, the launcher cannot offer it. Menu labels can move between releases, so the wording below reflects the documented interfaces available at the time of writing.
Do not confuse a pack update with installing one new mod. A pack selector normally resolves the publisher’s complete file set, including the loader, configuration and dependency choices associated with that build. If you manually edit a version number or replace only a loader, you can leave the instance with a mixture the launcher does not recognize.

Prepare before switching
Back up the data that matters
Close Minecraft and the launcher’s running game process. Make a copy of the instance folder, including the world or worlds, before selecting an update, reinstall, or downgrade. At minimum, preserve:
- the
savesfolder and any server-specific world data; - resource packs, screenshots, and options files you have customized;
- manually added mods, shader packs, scripts, and configuration files;
- the complete instance folder if you have enough storage.
Store the backup outside the live instance directory. A separate dated copy lets you restore the previous pack if a world fails to open or a custom change disappears. Do not rely on the launcher’s rollback behavior as your only backup: the documented workflows replace or reinstall files, and not every launcher promises an undo button.
Check whether you are upgrading or downgrading
Moving to a newer pack build is usually the safer direction, but it can still alter configs and remove files. Downgrading is the high-risk case. The Fabulously Optimized wiki warns: “Never downgrade to an older version, this could corrupt your worlds and settings!” Treat a downgrade as a migration: use a backup and, where possible, test the older build in a separate instance first.
A downgrade can mean both an older pack release and an older Minecraft release. Check both labels in the picker. If the target is older, never make your only copy of a world the test subject. Open a duplicate first, confirm that it loads, and keep the original backup untouched.
Decide whether to preserve custom edits
Pack updates can overwrite files you changed locally. CurseForge Support states: “Any custom changes you made to the modpack’s content will be overwritten when changing versions, unless you select Update to new Profile.” If preserving the current installation is more important than updating it in place, use a separate-profile or new-instance option where the launcher offers one.
Make a short inventory of edits before switching. Note manually added mods, changed key bindings, altered configuration files, resource packs, shaders and scripts. After the new instance starts, compare that inventory with what is present rather than assuming every local file survived.

Confirm the target build
Write down the target pack version, Minecraft version and loader shown by the launcher. This prevents selecting a similarly named build by mistake, especially when a pack publishes several files for different game versions. If the target does not appear, the author may not have uploaded it, or the launcher may be hiding an incompatible game-version file.

Change a modpack version in the CurseForge app
Use the built-in version menu
- Open the My Modpacks view.
- Hover over the pack you want to change.
- Click the small arrows next to Play.
- Choose Update to the latest version or select a specific version from the dropdown.
- Click Continue and let the app apply the files.
The menu appears only when the pack author has uploaded another file. A pack can therefore have a newer Minecraft release available while still offering no alternate build for the particular pack you installed. Selecting “latest” means the latest published file available to that profile, not necessarily the newest Minecraft release overall.
Wait for the operation to finish before launching. Then open the profile details and verify that the displayed pack and Minecraft versions match the target you selected. If the launcher reports a missing dependency or a different loader, stop and restore the backup rather than repeatedly starting the world.
Keep the old installation as a separate profile
Changing versions in place replaces the current pack content. To keep the existing installation, choose Update to new Profile when offered, or enable Update to a separate modpack profile. This gives you a second profile to test while leaving the original files available.

This option is useful when you have extensive configuration edits or want to compare a world in both versions. Give the new profile a distinct name, launch it once without importing the old world, and then copy or test a duplicate save. Keep the original profile until the new one has loaded successfully and your important settings are accounted for.
Fix a missing Change Version control
If the version control is absent, open the profile’s options and disable Allow content management for this profile. Return to the pack card and check the arrows beside Play again. The control still will not appear if the author has not published another compatible file.
A missing control is therefore not always an installation error. Check profile permissions first, then verify that another file exists for the pack. If neither condition is met, there is no in-app target to select; use a separate profile only when you have a specific published file to install.
Change a modpack version in the Modrinth App
Switch to another published pack build
- Open Library and select the instance.
- Click the gear icon to open instance settings.
- Under the installed modpack, click Change version.
- Pick the target pack version and follow the confirmation prompts.
The app’s changelog describes a list of every available version and an explicit warning before risky changes, including a version tied to a different Minecraft release or a downgrade. Read the warning instead of dismissing it: it identifies when the requested build is not a routine same-version update.

- Open Change version as above.
- Enable Show incompatible so versions for a newer Minecraft release are displayed.
- Select the desired latest version.
- When the app asks whether to move to the newer game version, click Update to ….
- Read the warning and confirm with Update modpack.
The confirmation is intentional: moving across Minecraft versions can require a different loader or mod set, and the app wants you to approve that incompatibility rather than silently installing it. If you do not confirm the final update, the instance remains on its existing version.
Handle a downgrade
The same picker can expose older builds, but do not treat the action as a routine rollback. Make a full backup first and test the old version with a copy of the world. The Fabulously Optimized warning about corruption applies particularly to this direction.
After a downgrade, verify the world, settings and resource packs separately. If the save fails to load, close the game and return to the backup rather than saving over it from another version.
Change a modpack version in Prism Launcher
Update a pack installed from a platform
- Close Minecraft and any process using the instance.
- In the instance list, right-click the pack and choose Edit.
- Open the platform tab that supplied the pack, such as CurseForge or Modrinth.
- Open the version dropdown and select the target build.
- Click Update pack and wait for the operation to finish before launching.
Some guides note that the dropdown can be wider than the default window. If the complete list is not visible, enlarge the window and reopen the selector. Make sure the platform tab matches the source from which the instance was installed; a pack supplied by one platform may not be selectable from another tab.
Check the instance after the update and confirm that the files were actually replaced. If the game was still running, close it and repeat the operation only after preserving a fresh backup.
Install a ZIP you downloaded yourself
For a self-downloaded pack archive, use Update from File in the same platform-management area, select the ZIP, and confirm the replacement. Keep the original instance backup because a file-based update can still replace configuration and custom content.

Use the archive’s own version information to select the intended file. Do not assume that a ZIP with a newer date is compatible with the Minecraft version already configured in the instance.
Account for version-label differences
Prism’s official site listing showed version 11.0.3, while a third-party guide published in 2026 refers to version 11.1.1 released in September 2026. That discrepancy does not establish which build you have; use the labels and controls displayed by your installed application. The documented update sequence above comes from a community guide rather than verified official in-place documentation.
Because menu wording can differ between releases, look for the platform tab, version dropdown and Update pack action even if their positions are not identical. If an option is absent, do not edit instance files manually; use Update from File or create a clean instance.
Change a modpack version in ATLauncher
Use Reinstall with a selected version
- Open the Instances tab.
- Select the instance and click Edit Instance.
- Choose Reinstall.
- Under Version to Install, select the target pack version.
- Click Reinstall again to apply it.
ATLauncher’s workflow is a reinstall rather than a narrowly scoped in-place patch. The newest build appears at the top of the version list in the documented interface. Because reinstall can replace a broad set of files, make the instance backup before opening this dialog and verify the world afterward.
Keep the old backup until you have launched the selected build and confirmed the save, controls and resource packs. If you intended only to change the pack build but the target also lists another Minecraft version, stop and check the target details before accepting the reinstall.

Why there is no one-click switch
The available MultiMC documentation does not show a built-in modpack-version switch. Its Instance Version page concerns changing the base Minecraft version, an operation that can replace loaders such as Forge or LiteLoader; that is not the same as selecting a different published modpack build.

Changing the base game version in an existing instance is therefore not a substitute for installing the publisher’s target pack file. It may leave out pack-specific mods, scripts or configurations.
Use a new instance as the workaround
- Click Add Instance.
- Open the Modrinth tab and select the pack and target version.
- Install the new instance without deleting the old one.
- Copy the required
saves, resource packs, screenshots, and options files from the old instance to the new one. - Launch the new instance and check the world, controls, graphics settings, and mod-dependent behavior.
- Delete the old instance only after the new copy works and the backup is safe.
The Fabulously Optimized comparison describes MultiMC upgrades as manual. Copy only data you understand: blindly moving every configuration file can bring incompatible settings into the new pack. Keep the old instance available while testing, and retain the external backup even after the new instance appears healthy.
Change a modpack version in GDLauncher
GDLauncher provides a direct control on its Settings page. Open the instance settings, click Change Modpack Version, choose the published target, and confirm. The same backup and custom-file cautions apply even though the operation is presented as a button rather than a reinstall.
Verify the selected pack and Minecraft labels after the change. If the desired version is absent, it has not been made available to that instance through the launcher’s source.

When the target uses a different Minecraft version
A pack-version change and a Minecraft-version change often occur together, but they are separate compatibility decisions. The Modrinth App explicitly exposes versions for another game version through Show incompatible and requires confirmation with Update modpack. For CurseForge, Prism Launcher, ATLauncher, and MultiMC, the available documentation does not establish a universal automatic migration rule for mismatched Minecraft versions.
Check the target pack’s listed Minecraft version and loader before launching. If the target changes from one game version to another, plan for possible mod replacements, new configuration defaults, and world-format changes. Test with a copied world first instead of opening your only save in the new environment.
Do not infer compatibility merely because the pack name is unchanged. A publisher can release separate files under the same pack for different game versions. Select the exact file and keep the prior instance until the target has passed a normal launch and world check.
Troubleshooting common version-switch problems
The Change Version button is missing
- CurseForge: disable Allow content management for this profile in Profile Options, then reopen the pack card.
- Any launcher: verify that the author has uploaded another file; a launcher cannot offer a version that does not exist.
- MultiMC: use the new-instance procedure because a built-in pack switch is not documented.
The version appears, but the update is blocked
Read the compatibility warning. In Modrinth, enable Show incompatible for a newer Minecraft target and approve the explicit Update modpack step. If the launcher still cannot proceed, confirm that the installed app is signed in where required and that the instance is not running.
For every launcher, close the game before retrying, confirm that the target file is published for the correct platform, and check that you have preserved the backup. Repeated retries can make it harder to determine which files changed.
My custom mods or settings disappeared
That is expected when the update replaces pack content. Restore the backup or create a separate profile, then reapply only the changes compatible with the target version. CurseForge’s separate-profile option is designed to preserve the current install while you test the new one.
The world will not load after a downgrade
Stop launching that save in the downgraded instance. Restore the pre-change instance and world backup, or test the older pack with a duplicate world. Do not overwrite the only known-good copy while troubleshooting.
Prism does not show the full list
Close the game, enlarge the Prism window, reopen the platform tab, and open the version dropdown again. For an archive that is not listed, use Update from File instead of the platform selector.

The target build is not listed
Check whether the pack author uploaded a file for that version and whether you are viewing the correct platform tab or profile. A launcher cannot manufacture an absent build. If you have a publisher-provided ZIP, Prism can use Update from File; MultiMC’s documented route remains a new instance.
Choosing between an in-place switch and a new instance
Use an in-place switch when
- you have a verified backup;
- the target is a published build for the same general environment;
- you do not need to preserve untracked edits in the live profile; and
- the launcher’s own updater recognizes the pack.
Use a separate profile or instance when
- you are downgrading;
- the target changes Minecraft or the mod loader;
- you have extensive custom configuration;
- you want to compare behavior before retiring the old pack; or
- the launcher has no built-in version switch, as with MultiMC.
A second instance costs some disk space but gives you a clean rollback path. Keep the original until the target has opened successfully, the world has been checked, and your settings and resource packs are available. This is also the clearest way to compare two builds without repeatedly mutating one installation.
Quick verification checklist after the switch
- Confirm the displayed modpack, Minecraft and loader versions.
- Launch once with a copied world when the game version changed or the operation was a downgrade.
- Check that the world loads, blocks and items render correctly, and no required mod is missing.
- Review key bindings, graphics options, resource packs and screenshots.
- Only after testing, copy back compatible custom files and retire the old instance.

What should I do if Prism Launcher does not show the target version?
