Rust controls world-save frequency with the server.saveinterval convar, measured in seconds. To save every 15 minutes, an administrator can run server.saveinterval 900. Apply it live through the F1 console or RCON, then place the same line in server.cfg or your startup configuration if the setting must survive a restart.

Shorter intervals limit progress lost after a crash but can increase periodic save work and stutter. Longer intervals reduce how often saves occur, but more recent progress can disappear after an unexpected shutdown.

What server.saveinterval controls
The value tells the Rust dedicated server how many seconds to wait between automatic world saves. It is a duration, not a number of saves per hour and not a minute value.
60means an automatic save about every minute.300means about every five minutes.600means about every 10 minutes.900means about every 15 minutes.
For example, enter server.saveinterval 900 to request a 15-minute interval. The setting affects the server process and its world data; it does not change how often a player’s computer writes screenshots, recordings or local files.

Change the interval while the server is running
A live change is useful when you are testing a value or need to react to performance problems without rebuilding the server configuration.
Using the F1 console
- Join the server with an account that has administrator or moderator permission.
- Open Rust’s F1 console.
- Enter
server.saveinterval <seconds>, replacing<seconds>with the desired whole-number interval. For 15 minutes, useserver.saveinterval 900. - Submit the command and leave the server running. The new value applies to subsequent automatic saves.
If the console rejects the command or reports a permission problem, confirm that the account is authenticated with the required server privilege rather than merely being connected as a normal player.

- Connect to the server’s RCON interface with an account that can execute server commands.
- Run
server.saveinterval <seconds>, such asserver.saveinterval 900. - Keep the RCON response or console output available so you can confirm whether the command was accepted.
Check the current value
Run server.saveinterval without a new number in the local console or through RCON. The server should return its current value. Checking rather than assuming is particularly important because published default values differ between hosting guides and can change with Rust updates.

Make the setting survive a restart
A live console command is not a reliable permanent configuration. Put the convar in the server’s persistent configuration as well.
Add it to server.cfg
- Stop the server cleanly before editing its configuration.
- Open the
server.cfgfile used by that installation. - Add one line containing the desired value, for example
server.saveinterval 900. - Save the file and start the server.
- After startup, query
server.saveintervalin the local console or RCON to verify that the loaded value matches the file.
The exact location of server.cfg depends on the server installation and hosting environment. Use the configuration file that your launch setup actually loads; placing a correct line in an unused copy has no effect.
Set it on the startup command line
If your deployment supplies convars through the startup command, add server.saveinterval with its seconds value to that command using the syntax required by your launcher or host. For example, the value to pass is conceptually server.saveinterval 900; the surrounding command-line formatting varies between management panels, scripts and service definitions.

Do not configure contradictory values in several places without checking which source wins in your setup. After every restart, query the live value and treat that result as authoritative.
Choosing a practical interval
There is no universally correct number. The decision is a trade-off between the amount of progress you are willing to lose and the amount of periodic save work your server can absorb.
Shorter intervals
- Reduce the maximum time between automatic saves, so an unexpected crash generally leaves less unsaved progress.
- Cause save operations to occur more frequently. On a server with a large save file, that additional work can contribute to periodic stutter.
- Can be appropriate when preserving recent building, inventory or world changes is more important than minimizing save activity.
Longer intervals
- Reduce how often the world is written, which can lessen periodic save-related stutter on servers with large save files.
- Increase the amount of progress that may be lost if the process crashes or the machine restarts before the next save.
- Can be appropriate when the current interval causes noticeable pauses and the community accepts a larger recovery window.
Use a measured change
- Record the current value with
server.saveinterval. - Change one variable at a time, using a clear value such as 300, 600 or 900 seconds.
- Observe several save cycles for hitching, player reports and restart recovery.
- If stutter worsens, increase the interval cautiously. If crash-related loss is unacceptable, reduce it instead.
- Once the value is chosen, put it in the persistent configuration and verify it after a restart.
Do not set the interval extremely low merely because frequent saves sound safer. Guidance for the convar warns that an interval that is too low can have adverse effects; the right value depends on the server’s save workload and tolerance for lost progress.

What is Rust’s default save interval?
A single official default should not be assumed. Third-party hosting guides publish conflicting figures, and none of these figures is an official Facepunch confirmation.

Because those claims disagree, query your own server with server.saveinterval instead of relying on a number copied from a setup guide. Rust updates, server distributions and launch configurations can also make old instructions stale.
Force a save immediately
Community administration guides commonly describe server.save as a command that forces an immediate save. That behavior has not been verified here against a current official Facepunch reference, so treat it as an operational command to test on your own server rather than as a guaranteed substitute for the configured interval.
If you use it, run it from the authorized F1 console, RCON session or local console and watch the server output for confirmation. It does not remove the need to configure server.saveinterval; it is intended for an on-demand save between automatic cycles.
Troubleshoot a value that does not stick
The command is rejected
- Check that you are authenticated as an administrator or moderator in the F1 console, or as an authorized RCON user.
- Check spelling: the convar is
server.saveinterval, with no space between “save” and “interval.” - Use a numeric seconds value, such as
300or900, rather than writing “5m” or “15 minutes.”
The value changes, then reverts after a restart
- A live console change affects the running process but is not necessarily written back to disk.
- Confirm that the line exists in the
server.cfgactually loaded by the server, or in the startup configuration used by your service. - Search for another startup script, panel setting or configuration file that supplies a different value later in the launch sequence.
- Restart, query
server.saveinterval, and compare the result with the intended persistent value.
Players report a hitch during saves
- Confirm the active value and note when the hitch occurs.
- If the pause lines up with each save, test a somewhat longer interval to reduce save frequency.
- Monitor whether the longer interval creates an unacceptable recovery window for your players.
- Keep the value that balances observed stutter against the amount of progress the community is willing to lose.
A crash loses more progress than expected
Verify the current interval first. A longer value inherently leaves a larger unsaved window, and a server that was restarted before its configuration loaded may be using a different value than the one you intended. Lower the interval only after confirming the live setting.
Keep the configuration maintainable
- Write the unit in an administrator note: for example, “900 seconds (15 minutes).” This prevents someone from mistaking the value for minutes.
- After Rust updates or a hosting-panel migration, recheck the convar because command names, defaults and configuration-file locations are volatile.
- Document who can use F1 and RCON to change the setting, since an unauthorized live change can silently alter crash-loss and performance behavior.
- Use the live query after maintenance windows and unexpected restarts; it is more dependable than assuming an old guide’s default still applies.
The essential workflow is simple: choose a seconds value, apply server.saveinterval <seconds> live when needed, persist the same line in the configuration that your server loads, and verify the running value after startup.
