You can change the name on your Epic Games account from Epic’s website without changing your PlayStation Online ID or Xbox gamertag. Sign in to the Epic account linked to your game, verify its email address, open Account settings, replace the value in Display name, and select Continue. Epic allows a display-name change once every two weeks. Nintendo Switch uses the Epic display name, so the result is different there than on PlayStation or Xbox.
The important distinction is ownership: Epic controls the Epic display name, while PlayStation and Xbox control the names shown on their platforms. Changing the Epic value will not rename either console account.

What changes when you edit your Epic display name
The display name is attached to your Epic Games account. Epic says it appears in the Epic Games Launcher, on its official forum and AnswerHub, and when you play Epic games on PC, Mac, Switch or mobile. The account setting is therefore the correct place to change the name used in those contexts. Epic’s explanation is available in Where can I find my Epic Games Display Name?

PlayStation and Xbox are separate. Their consoles show the PlayStation ID/display name or Xbox gamertag/display name supplied by those platforms. Epic states that changing the Epic display name does not affect either one. A player can consequently see one name on a console and another in Epic’s launcher or account pages.

Nintendo is the exception among the consoles covered by Epic’s locator: Nintendo uses the Epic Games display name. If your goal is to rename a Switch identity, the Epic account procedure is the relevant one.
Epic name versus console name
Use this map before changing anything. It prevents the common mistake of editing the wrong account.

If you want a different PSN name or Xbox gamertag, Epic’s account page is not the setting to use. You must follow the platform’s own account process instead. The Epic change only addresses the Epic-owned name.

Check these requirements first
A successful rename depends on the account being ready. Check each item before entering a new name.
- You are signing in to the linked Epic account. A console login can lead to a different Epic account from the one you intended, especially if more than one person has used the console.
- The Epic account email is verified. Epic lists email verification as a prerequisite. If the account page asks you to verify the address, complete that process before attempting the rename.
- The account is not within the two-week cooldown. Epic permits one display-name change every two weeks. A lock beside the field generally indicates that the previous change was too recent.
- You know which identity you are trying to change. Editing Epic’s value cannot rename a PlayStation ID or Xbox gamertag.
- You do not plan to unlink the console account. Unlinking is not part of a normal name change and can affect access to game data associated with the Epic account.

- Open Epic Games’ website and sign in. Use the Epic account connected to the game. If you normally play only on a console and never completed Epic account setup, use the appropriate console sign-in option and follow the setup instructions described in the next section.
- Open Account settings. After signing in, go to the account settings page rather than a console profile page. The display-name control belongs to the Epic account.
- Confirm email verification. The account email must be verified. If it is not, complete Epic’s verification prompt and return to Account settings.
- Find the Display name box. Enter the new name exactly as you want it to appear. Review spelling, capitalization and spacing before submitting; the two-week limit means an accidental change cannot normally be corrected immediately.
- Select Continue. This applies the new Epic display name. The name change does not modify your PlayStation Online ID or Xbox gamertag.
- Check the result where you use Epic’s identity. Reopen the account page or sign in to the Epic Games Launcher to confirm the new value. On a console, compare the result with the platform-specific name table above rather than expecting every screen to change.
If you only have a console account
Some players began playing through a console and never finished creating a full Epic account. In that situation, signing in with an email-password combination you do not recognize can open the wrong account or fail to show the game connection.
Instead, go to Epic’s website and choose the sign-in button for the console you use. Epic’s account guidance says to complete the Finish Setting Up Your Account prompt if it appears. Finish that setup, return to Account settings, verify the account email, and then follow the display-name steps. This process establishes access to the existing linked Epic account. It is not a reason to create a second account or unlink the console. If the account page shows no expected game connection, stop and confirm that you used the correct console sign-in option before making changes.
Why the name can look different in a game
Playing on PlayStation
PlayStation supplies the name shown as the PlayStation Online ID or display name. Epic’s display-name change leaves that value alone. You may therefore see the new Epic name in an Epic account page while other players still see the PSN name in a PlayStation-controlled in-game context.
Playing on Xbox
Xbox supplies the gamertag/display name. Changing Epic’s display name does not rename the gamertag. If the objective is specifically to change the Xbox name, use Microsoft’s Xbox account settings rather than Epic’s Account settings.

Playing on Nintendo Switch
Epic’s display-name locator identifies Nintendo as using the Epic Games display name. A Switch player should therefore expect the Epic rename to be relevant to the name shown while using that account on Switch, subject to the game’s own interface.

These are Epic-controlled contexts in Epic’s documentation. The Epic display name is the value to edit when you want the identity associated with the launcher or Epic account to change.
What a locked Display name field means
If the Display name box is locked or a lock icon appears beside it, the most likely explanation is the two-week cooldown. Epic says a display name can be changed once every two weeks. The page can show when the last change happened: hover over the information icon beside the display-name field to view the relevant date.
Do not repeatedly submit the form or try to bypass the lock by unlinking and relinking a console. Wait until the cooldown has ended, then return to Account settings and try again. The cooldown applies to the Epic display name; it does not give Epic control over the timing of a separate PlayStation or Xbox name change.
When your email is not verified
Epic requires a verified account email for this change. If the Display name control will not let you continue and the account email is unverified, use the verification option associated with the account, complete the email confirmation, and reload Account settings. Make sure the confirmation was sent to an address you can access and that you are still signed in to the intended Epic account.

Email verification and the display-name cooldown are separate checks. Verifying the address does not reset or shorten a two-week wait, and waiting for the cooldown does not verify an email address.
Do not unlink the console to fix a name mismatch
A stale-looking console name in Epic’s Linked accounts area does not mean the Epic display-name procedure failed. Epic says synchronization can take a while. Its linked-account instructions are for changing or managing the connected console account, not for renaming the Epic account.
Unlinking is risky because Epic warns that access to game data associated with the account can be affected. Leave the link in place while waiting for synchronization. Only investigate unlinking when you have a separate, deliberate account-linking problem and have reviewed Epic’s specific instructions in My console display name hasn’t updated on my Epic Games Linked accounts page and How do I change the console account I have linked to my Epic Games account?.

Epic points players to separate display-name rules for names that are rejected. The available procedure does not establish every acceptance criterion, so do not assume that a particular spelling, symbol, length or wording is guaranteed to work. Review Epic’s current name rules from the message or help link shown on the account page and choose another name if necessary.

Child accounts can have additional restrictions. Epic identifies Cabined Accounts as having different features, so a child account may not offer the same display-name options as an unrestricted account. Use Epic’s Cabined Account guidance for the exact case rather than trying to work around the restriction by changing the linked console.
Troubleshooting by symptom

Choose the right procedure for your goal
“I want my Epic launcher name changed.”
Use Epic’s Account settings, verify the email, enter the new Display name and select Continue. This is the direct match for the request.
“I want my Fortnite name changed on Xbox.”
First identify which name the Xbox screen is showing. If it is the Xbox gamertag, an Epic rename will not change it. Use Xbox’s account process for a gamertag change. If a particular screen is showing the Epic identity instead, follow the Epic procedure, but expect the gamertag itself to remain unchanged.
“I want my Fortnite name changed on PlayStation.”
Apply the same distinction: a PlayStation-controlled screen uses the PSN ID/display name, which Epic cannot rename. Change the PlayStation identity through PlayStation if that is the value you want to replace.
“I play on Switch and want the account name changed.”
Nintendo uses the Epic display name according to Epic’s locator. Sign in to the linked Epic account, complete verification and change the Display name there.
“My Epic name and console name are different, and that is okay.”
No correction is required. Different names are expected when one platform supplies its own identity. Keep the Epic display name and platform name separate when telling friends which account to search for or when checking screenshots.

- Write down the current Epic display name so you can identify the account if several profiles are open in the browser.
- Check the account email shown in Account settings before changing anything. A verified address is required, and the correct account matters more than the device used to sign in.
- Decide whether you are changing the Epic identity or a console identity. The two-week Epic cooldown makes it sensible to settle the spelling before submitting.
- Keep the console linked. A display-name edit does not require unlinking, and unlinking can affect access to associated game data.
- After saving, check the Epic launcher or account page for the Epic result, then check the console separately. Seeing the old PlayStation or Xbox name is not evidence that the Epic change failed.
