Epic Games Display Name vs. PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Usernames: What Other Players See

Short answer: In Epic’s supported games, players on PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile see your Epic Games display name. Players on PlayStation see the PlayStation account display name (PSN Online ID), while players on Xbox see the Xbox gamertag. These are separate account names, so changing your Epic display name does not rename your PlayStation or Xbox identity.

The name other players see depends on the platform you are using

Epic’s support guidance covers Fortnite, Fall Guys and Rocket League. Within those games, the platform determines which account supplies the visible name. The rule is not that every game on a console must use the same name; it is Epic’s rule for the games covered by its guidance.

Platform Name shown in Epic’s supported games Account that controls it Where to verify
PC or Mac Epic Games display name Epic Games account Epic account settings, or the name shown in the game lobby
Nintendo Switch Epic Games display name Epic Games account Epic account settings, or the name shown in the game lobby
Mobile Epic Games display name Epic Games account Epic account settings, or the name shown in the game lobby
PlayStation PlayStation account display name, also called the PSN Online ID PlayStation account PlayStation account settings, or the name shown in the game lobby
Xbox Xbox gamertag Xbox account Xbox account settings, or the name shown in the game lobby

Epic explicitly groups Nintendo with PC and mobile: in these games, it says the Epic account display name is always used. A separate nickname you may use elsewhere on a Nintendo account is not the name Epic says appears in the supported games.

What “display name” means here

“Epic Games display name” means the public label on the Epic account, not the email address used to sign in. “PSN Online ID” is the public PlayStation identity, and “gamertag” is the public Xbox identity. They can happen to be identical, but matching text does not make them one shared setting. Each is owned and changed through its respective account.

The same Epic account can therefore have one visible name on a laptop, another on PlayStation and a third on Xbox. That is expected platform behavior, not evidence that the game created duplicate Epic accounts.

Why your console name can differ from your Epic name

Your Epic account and your console account remain distinct identities even when they are linked for gameplay. A linked PlayStation or Xbox account can provide access to an Epic game, but the name rendered above your character or in the lobby is still supplied by the platform rule in the table.

PlayStation

On PlayStation, the visible name is your PlayStation account display name, commonly referred to as your PSN Online ID. If your Epic account says “RiverPilot” but your PlayStation Online ID says “NorthStar,” other players on the PlayStation session will see “NorthStar” in the places Epic describes. Editing “RiverPilot” in Epic account settings does not edit the PlayStation Online ID.

Xbox

On Xbox, the visible name is the Xbox gamertag. An Epic display name such as “RiverPilot” can therefore appear as “NorthStar” to other players if that is the gamertag on the Xbox account you are using. Changing the Epic name alone leaves the gamertag unchanged.

PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile

On these platforms, Epic says the game uses the Epic Games account display name. If you play the same linked account on a PC and a Nintendo Switch, the supported game should identify you with that Epic display name rather than with a separate Nintendo nickname.

Why linking does not merge names

Linking authorizes accounts to work together; it does not create a universal username field. A linked-account page can show the connected platform identity while the game still follows the platform-specific display rule. Treat the link as an association between accounts, not as a rename or migration of either account’s public label.

What appears in a Fortnite lobby and during a match

Epic’s linked-account guidance says the platform display name is visible in the game lobby on the respective platform. In Fortnite, the name appears above the character. That gives you a practical way to check the active identity without guessing from an account email or a console profile screen.

Check the exact device you are playing

  1. Launch Fortnite on the PC, mobile device or console whose name you want to check.
  2. Enter the lobby and look at the name above your character.
  3. Compare that name with the account you intend to rename. On PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile, compare it with the Epic display name; on PlayStation, compare it with the PSN Online ID; on Xbox, compare it with the gamertag.
  4. If you switch platforms, repeat the check. A single linked Epic account can display different names on PlayStation or Xbox than it displays on PC, Nintendo Switch or mobile.

This lobby check is especially useful when a family shares a device, when several console profiles are available, or when an account was linked a long time ago and you no longer remember which platform identity is active.

Check before changing anything

Write down the exact name shown in the lobby, the device being used and the account currently signed in. Then compare those details with the account page you plan to edit. This simple sequence prevents the common mistake of changing an Epic name when the lobby is displaying a console identity, or changing one family member’s profile while another profile is active.

Do not use the email address, Epic account ID or a friend’s platform label as a substitute for the lobby name. Epic’s practical instruction is to inspect the display name in the game on the relevant platform.

How to see every linked account name from Epic

Epic provides a central view of the names associated with linked accounts.

  1. Sign in to your Epic Games account.
  2. Open Account.
  3. Select Linked Accounts.
  4. Review the display name listed for each linked account.

Use this page to identify which PlayStation or Xbox account is connected, then use the in-game lobby check to confirm what is actually being rendered on the platform you are playing. The linked-account page is an account-management view; it does not merge the names into one universal username.

What this page can and cannot tell you

  • It can help identify the platform account connected to your Epic account.
  • It can show the account name Epic associates with each linked account.
  • It cannot make a PlayStation Online ID or Xbox gamertag follow an Epic rename.
  • It does not prove that a different console profile is not signed in on the device; the lobby check remains the final practical check.

Changing the Epic Games display name

Changing the Epic display name affects the name Epic uses on PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile in the supported games. Epic’s instructions impose two conditions: your email address must be verified, and the display name can be changed only once every two weeks.

  1. Sign in to the Epic Games account.
  2. Open the account settings area where your display name is shown.
  3. Confirm that the account email address is verified. If it is not, complete Epic’s verification process before attempting the change.
  4. Enter the new display name and save it using the controls shown in the account settings.
  5. Allow for the two-week change interval. If you changed the name recently, the setting will not permit another change until that interval has elapsed.
  6. Start the relevant game on PC, Nintendo Switch or mobile and check the lobby name above your character.

The change does not rename a PlayStation Online ID or an Xbox gamertag. If the same Epic account is used on one of those consoles, the console name can continue to look different by design.

Requirements and timing to remember

  • Verified email: Epic requires the account email address to be verified before the display-name change.
  • Two-week interval: Epic’s instructions limit changes to once every two weeks. A recently changed name cannot be changed again immediately.
  • Platform scope: The edit controls the Epic name used on PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile in the covered games; it is not a console-account rename.
  • Confirmation: Check the lobby after saving, especially if more than one Epic or console account is used on the device.

If the new name appears on PC but not on a console, that result is consistent with the platform mapping. It is not a reason to repeat the Epic change or assume the update failed.

Changing the name other players see on PlayStation or Xbox

PlayStation: change the PSN identity

Because PlayStation supplies the visible name, use the PlayStation account’s own profile or account-management controls to change the PSN Online ID. Changing the Epic display name is the wrong setting for this job. After the PlayStation change is complete, reopen the game and verify the new name in the lobby.

Xbox: change the gamertag

On Xbox, use the Xbox account’s gamertag controls. An Epic account rename cannot substitute for a gamertag change. Check the lobby after saving the new gamertag to ensure that the account and console profile you intended to edit are the ones currently in use.

Epic’s guidance directs players to the relevant platform websites for PlayStation and Xbox name changes. The exact menus can vary with the platform’s current account interface, so follow the current instructions shown by the platform owner rather than assuming that an Epic setting controls the console name.

Do not change the wrong account

On a shared console, first identify the signed-in PlayStation or Xbox profile. A different profile can make the game show a different Online ID or gamertag even though the console is linked to the same household. Sign out or switch to the intended profile, launch the game again and compare the lobby label before editing any account.

A practical decision guide when the wrong name appears

What you see Most likely control Action
Your new Epic name appears on PC but the old name remains on PlayStation PlayStation Online ID is unchanged Change the PlayStation account name if you want the console label to change
Your new Epic name appears on mobile but not on Xbox Xbox gamertag is unchanged Change the Xbox gamertag, not the Epic display name
A different person’s name appears on a shared console The game is using another console profile Sign out or switch to the intended PlayStation or Xbox account, then check the lobby
The name is correct in account settings but different in the lobby The active platform supplies a different identity Identify the device rule in the platform table and inspect that account’s settings
Names outside your party appear as “Player” A Fortnite gameplay privacy setting may be hiding them Review the display-name privacy setting; this is visibility masking, not a rename

A short troubleshooting sequence

  1. Note the platform and the exact lobby label.
  2. Determine whether the platform should use the Epic name, PSN Online ID or Xbox gamertag.
  3. Open the corresponding account settings, not a different provider’s settings.
  4. Check which profile is signed in if the device is shared.
  5. Make the appropriate change, respecting Epic’s verified-email and two-week requirements when the Epic account is the one being edited.
  6. Return to the lobby and verify the result on that same device.

This sequence also separates a naming issue from a visibility issue. “Player” for opponents is a privacy display setting; a different label above your own character usually points to the active account and platform.

When Fortnite shows “Player” instead of a display name

Fortnite support describes a setting called Hide Other Display Names During Regular Gameplay. When enabled, names of players outside your party or squad are replaced with “Player.” Disabling it allows those names to appear outside your party or squad.

This setting changes what is rendered during gameplay; it does not change anyone’s Epic display name, PSN Online ID or Xbox gamertag. If the wording or location of the control looks different in your current Fortnite build, use the current in-game privacy or gameplay settings labels. Epic’s description of this option is older than its linked-account guidance, so the exact label may have changed.

Distinguish hidden names from account mismatches

  • If only opponents or players outside your party are replaced by “Player,” investigate the hide-display-names option.
  • If your own name is different on one device, investigate which account supplies the platform name.
  • If your party members see a different label for you, compare the platform each person is using; PlayStation and Xbox can expose their console identities while PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile expose the Epic name.
  • If names are visible in the lobby but masked during regular gameplay, treat that as a display setting rather than an account-renaming problem.

Cross-platform examples

Example: Epic name changed, console name did not

You rename an Epic account from “SkyHarbor” to “SkyHarborTV.” On PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile, the supported games use “SkyHarborTV.” On PlayStation, the lobby can still show the PSN Online ID “SkyHarbor,” and on Xbox it can still show the gamertag “HarborPilot.” Nothing is broken: three separate account settings are being applied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example: one account, two visible names

You use one linked Epic account on a laptop and an Xbox console. Other players can see the Epic display name in the laptop session and the Xbox gamertag in the Xbox session. The difference follows the device, not a second Epic account.

Example: Nintendo Switch nickname confusion

Your Nintendo account has a nickname that differs from your Epic display name. In the Epic-supported games covered by the guidance, the displayed name on Nintendo Switch is the Epic display name. Check the Epic account and the lobby rather than assuming the Nintendo nickname is being used.

Example: friends on different platforms

You appear as “RiverPilot” to a friend playing on PC, but as “NorthStar” to a friend playing on PlayStation while you are using that console. The different labels reflect the platform each session uses. Neither friend is necessarily looking at a second account, and changing the Epic name alone will not make the PlayStation label match.

Names, privacy and account ownership

A visible display name is not proof that the underlying Epic account, PlayStation account or Xbox account has been renamed. The platform can mask other players’ names, and a linked account can retain its own identity even when gameplay is shared through Epic services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use Epic account settings to manage the Epic display name.
  • Use PlayStation account settings to manage the PSN Online ID.
  • Use Xbox account settings to manage the gamertag.
  • Use the game lobby to confirm the name actually being presented on the current device.

Keeping those controls separate prevents a common mistake: repeatedly changing an Epic name when the name other players see is supplied by a console account.

Privacy does not change ownership

Masking another player as “Player” does not alter that player’s account, and seeing a console label does not mean the Epic account has been renamed. Account ownership and on-screen visibility are related but separate questions: first identify which account owns the name, then determine whether a privacy setting is hiding it.

Limits of the platform rule

The platform mapping above comes from Epic’s support instructions for Fortnite, Fall Guys and Rocket League. It should not be generalized to every game available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation or Xbox. Individual games can implement their own naming systems, overlays or privacy controls.

For an Epic-supported game, however, the reliable sequence is straightforward: identify the device, check the lobby, determine which account owns that name, and change that account’s setting. The two-week Epic change limit and verified-email requirement apply to the Epic display-name setting; they do not turn an Epic rename into a PlayStation or Xbox rename.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Epic Games display name the same as my PlayStation username?

Not necessarily. In Epic’s supported games, PlayStation uses the PlayStation account display name, also called the PSN Online ID. Your Epic display name can be different even when the accounts are linked.

What name do Xbox players see?

When you are playing on Xbox, the visible identity is the Xbox gamertag. To change that label, use the Xbox account’s gamertag controls rather than Epic account settings.

Does Nintendo Switch use my Nintendo nickname?

Epic says that, in the covered games, Nintendo Switch uses the Epic Games account display name. A separate Nintendo nickname is not the name Epic says appears in those games.

Why did changing my Epic name not change the name on my console?

Epic, PlayStation and Xbox names are separate. The Epic change applies to the Epic display name used on PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile; PlayStation continues to use the PSN Online ID and Xbox continues to use the gamertag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where can I confirm which name is active?

Look at the name above your character in the Fortnite lobby on the exact platform you are using. You can also sign in to Epic, open Account and then Linked Accounts to review the names associated with connected platform accounts.

Can I change the Epic display name whenever I want?

No. Epic’s support instructions require a verified email address and limit display-name changes to once every two weeks.

Why do I see “Player” instead of another user’s name?

Fortnite’s “Hide Other Display Names During Regular Gameplay” option can replace the names of players outside your party or squad with “Player.” That masks visibility; it does not rename the players or their accounts.

Will changing the name on one platform change it everywhere?

No. Change the account that supplies the name on that platform. An Epic rename affects the Epic display name, while a PlayStation or Xbox rename affects only that console identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the account page and lobby show different names?

First identify the device. On PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile, compare the lobby with the Epic display name. On PlayStation compare it with the PSN Online ID, and on Xbox compare it with the gamertag. Also check that the intended profile is signed in on a shared console.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which name appears above my character in Fortnite on PC?

Epic says PC uses the Epic Games account display name. Check the Epic account settings and confirm it in the lobby.

Which name appears above my character on PlayStation?

PlayStation uses the PlayStation account display name, or PSN Online ID. An Epic display-name change does not change it.

Which name appears above my character on Xbox?

Xbox uses the Xbox gamertag. Edit the Xbox account if that is the label you want to change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a Nintendo Switch nickname control the name in Epic’s games?

Epic groups Nintendo Switch with PC and mobile and says those games always display the Epic account display name.

How often can I change my Epic display name?

Epic’s instructions allow a change once every two weeks, and the account email must be verified.

Why are other players called “Player”?

The Fortnite setting “Hide Other Display Names During Regular Gameplay” can mask names outside your party or squad. It is a visibility setting, not a rename.

How do I find the linked PlayStation or Xbox name?

Sign in to Epic, open Account, choose Linked Accounts and review the display name listed for each linked account. Confirm the result in the game lobby.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do I see different names on my laptop and console?

The same linked Epic account can show its Epic name on PC and the console account’s PSN Online ID or Xbox gamertag on a console. The difference follows the platform.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Epic-supported games use the Epic display name on PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile, but use the PSN Online ID on PlayStation and the Xbox gamertag on Xbox. Check the lobby, identify the account that supplies that name, and change that account—while remembering that Epic requires a verified email and limits its own name changes to once every two weeks.
