These steps apply to Windows laptops. They can correct a power or configuration mismatch, but they cannot create performance that the laptop’s hardware or the game does not support. Windows 11 labels and options are given below; Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so use supported software where possible.

First, separate low FPS from stuttering
Low FPS means the game is consistently rendering fewer frames than you want. It is often visible as a persistently low counter, slow camera movement and reduced responsiveness. Stuttering is uneven frame delivery: the game may appear smooth and then pause briefly, hitch during movement or produce irregular pacing even when the displayed FPS number looks acceptable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe same laptop can show both symptoms. A power-saving mode may hold performance down throughout a session, while a background process can cause occasional spikes. Treat the symptoms separately rather than assuming that one setting will solve every problem.

1. Establish a repeatable baseline before changing settings
Without a consistent comparison, it is easy to mistake a different scene or a temporary background task for an improvement. Choose one game and repeat the same short test each time.
- Use the same save point, map area or repeatable route.
- Keep resolution, graphics presets, texture settings, ray-tracing options and the game’s display mode unchanged during the first comparison.
- Record whether the laptop is on battery or connected to its normal power adapter.
- Note whether the problem started after a Windows update, graphics-driver update, game patch or settings change.
- Compare both the sustained frame rate and the timing of the hitches. A higher average with worse hitching is not an overall improvement.
This is a practical test method, not a universal benchmark prescribed by Microsoft. Its purpose is to give every change the same conditions.
2. Check power state and Windows power mode
A gaming laptop can behave very differently on battery and on its adapter. Before changing game settings, connect the charger that normally powers the machine and confirm that Windows recognizes it. If the adapter is under-sized, damaged or intermittently disconnecting, the system may repeatedly change its performance state.
Windows 11: choose a performance-oriented mode
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Power & battery.
- Under the power-mode control, select Best performance when maximum performance is needed and external power is available.
- Run the same in-game test again.
Microsoft describes Best performance as a mode that can let the processor operate at higher performance levels when needed. It also increases power consumption: on a laptop, the battery drains faster and the device may run warmer. A warmer chassis after selecting this mode is therefore expected; it is not, by itself, proof of thermal throttling.
What the power modes change
| Mode | When it makes sense | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Best power efficiency | Battery use, quiet light work and situations where game performance is not the priority | Can limit performance and worsen a low-FPS problem |
| Balanced | General use or gaming when heat, noise and battery life need to be moderated | May not sustain the highest performance available from the hardware |
| Best performance | Plugged-in gaming when you need the laptop to favor responsiveness | Uses more power and may make the laptop warmer |
Some PCs expose different choices, and custom power plans can change what is available. If the selector is missing, use the options that your edition and manufacturer provide rather than assuming a hidden mode is present.

3. Make sure the game is using the intended GPU
Many laptops contain an integrated graphics processor and a separate, more powerful GPU. Windows 11 can set a per-application preference, but selecting High performance is a check, not a guarantee that every game will run faster. The game, driver and laptop firmware still affect the result.
Set a per-game preference in Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Find the game in the app list. If it is not listed, use the option to browse for and add its executable.
- Select the game and open Options.
- Choose High performance, save the setting and restart the game.
- Repeat your baseline test and compare both FPS and hitching.
The exact choices depend on whether the system has more than one graphics processor. If Windows shows only one GPU, there is no second adapter to select through this page.
Windowed-game optimization
Windows 11 also provides Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 titles running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. If you change this setting, restart the game before judging the result. It is not a universal fix, and a full-screen game or an incompatible API may not use it.
4. Find background resource contention
A brief hitch can occur when another application consumes processor time, memory or storage bandwidth. Task Manager can show whether that is happening while the game is running.
Use Task Manager while reproducing the problem
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Processes, sort by CPU, Memory and Disk in turn.
- On Performance, watch the graphs for CPU, memory and disk activity as the stutter occurs.
- Close applications you recognize and do not need, then repeat the same game test.
Typical examples include a browser with many tabs, a file-transfer operation, a program installing an update or another game launcher doing work in the background. Do not indiscriminately disable security software, drivers or essential Windows services; closing an unknown process can create a new problem.

Windows includes controls for background activity for supported apps. Their availability and behavior vary by app and Windows version, so treat them as a targeted way to reduce unwanted work rather than a blanket gaming optimization. First identify a process that correlates with the hitch, then change only that app’s setting and test again.
5. Handle graphics-driver changes based on timing
Driver troubleshooting is most useful when tied to an event. If stuttering began immediately after a graphics-driver or Windows update, rolling back may be more sensible than repeatedly installing newer packages. If there was no recent change, updating or reinstalling the correct driver is a reasonable diagnostic step, but neither action proves that the driver caused the stutter.
Use the correct source and sequence
- Identify the exact laptop model, Windows edition and graphics adapter.
- Check the laptop maker’s support page first for a driver intended for that model and operating system. Graphics-adapter makers may also provide packages, but laptop-specific power switching and display features can depend on the system maker’s version.
- If the problem follows a recent update, use Windows’ driver rollback option when it is available and the previous driver is still installed.
- If rollback is unavailable or the driver is damaged, update or reinstall the appropriate display driver, restart Windows and repeat the baseline test.
Microsoft’s documented rollback and reinstall guidance addresses display symptoms such as flickering or a scrambled image. Applying it to game stutter is a troubleshooting inference, not evidence that every stutter is a driver fault. Keep notes about which version you installed so you can reverse the change.
6. Verify refresh rate and variable refresh support
Refresh rate describes how often the display can update, while FPS describes how many frames the game renders. A 144 Hz panel does not force a game to render at 144 FPS, and selecting a higher refresh rate cannot manufacture missing GPU performance.

Check the active display in Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Confirm that the selected display is the laptop panel or external monitor you are actually using.
- Review the current refresh rate and the rates Windows offers.
- Check whether Windows reports variable refresh rate (VRR) capability.
The available rates depend on the display, connection and hardware. Some games can use VRR dynamically when the display supports it. If you change the refresh rate or a VRR-related setting, restart the game and use the same test scene. A mismatch between the selected display and the display showing the game can make a correct setting appear ineffective.
7. Investigate heat without guessing at a temperature limit
Best performance can make a laptop warmer, but warmth alone does not establish thermal throttling. The Microsoft guidance reviewed here supplies no universal temperature cutoff and does not prove that a cooling pad, stand or software utility will fix stutter on every model.
When heat becomes a model-specific issue
- The laptop becomes progressively slower during a session rather than starting slow.
- Hitches correlate with the chassis becoming hot or fans reaching their highest speed.
- Performance returns after the machine cools or after a restart.
These signs justify checking the manufacturer’s diagnostics, ventilation requirements and support documentation for the exact model. Keep intake and exhaust vents unobstructed and use the manufacturer’s recommended surface. Do not apply a universal temperature threshold from another laptop; cooling design, sensors and firmware differ.
Only after heat has been identified as a likely contributor should you consider a ventilated stand or cooling pad. The cited Windows guidance does not establish that an accessory will solve the problem or work with every laptop, so treat a purchase as an experiment with a return option, not a guaranteed repair.

8. Use the results to identify the limiting factor
| Observation after a controlled change | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Performance improves only when the adapter is connected or Best performance is selected | Power policy or power state was limiting sustained performance | Use the performance mode for plugged-in gaming and accept its battery and heat trade-offs |
| The game improves after selecting High performance in Graphics settings | The previous per-app GPU preference may have selected the wrong adapter or policy | Keep the setting for that game and verify it again after major Windows or driver changes |
| Hitches line up with CPU, memory or disk spikes from another process | Resource contention is interrupting frame delivery | Close or reconfigure the identified app; avoid disabling unrelated system services |
| The problem begins directly after a driver update | The new driver is a plausible trigger, not a confirmed cause | Try a documented rollback, then test; otherwise install the model-appropriate driver |
| Changing refresh rate does not change rendered FPS | The display limit and the game’s rendering limit are separate | Check VRR support and game frame pacing rather than expecting refresh rate alone to add FPS |
| Performance degrades as the laptop heats | Heat or firmware behavior may be involved | Use model-specific diagnostics and airflow guidance before buying an accessory |
Common mistakes that make stutter harder to diagnose
- Changing several variables at once: You cannot tell whether power mode, GPU assignment or a driver made the difference. Change one category, restart when instructed and repeat the same scene.
- Testing on battery and charger interchangeably: Record the power state for every comparison.
- Equating refresh rate with FPS: A faster panel can display more frequent updates but does not increase the game’s rendering workload capacity.
- Assuming Best performance is always better: It consumes more power and may increase heat; use it when that trade-off is acceptable.
- Installing a generic driver first: Laptop-specific switching and display behavior can depend on the system maker’s package.
- Closing critical services at random: Target the process that correlates with the hitch and leave security and essential Windows components alone.
- Buying cooling hardware before confirming heat: No universal threshold or accessory guarantee is established; diagnose the model first.
What these Windows steps cannot establish
These checks can reveal a power policy, GPU-selection or background-process mismatch. They do not determine whether a particular game’s graphics settings exceed the laptop’s hardware, whether a component upgrade is compatible, or whether a BIOS option, game patch or third-party utility is responsible. Those questions require documentation for the exact laptop and game. If the same controlled test remains slow after power, GPU, resource, driver and display checks, the remaining limit may simply be the hardware-and-game combination rather than a Windows setting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will selecting Best performance always increase FPS?
No. It removes a power-policy constraint when one is present, but it cannot make hardware render beyond its capability. It also uses more power and may make the laptop warmer.
Should I always force every game to High performance?
Only on systems with more than one GPU and when testing shows the preference helps. It is a per-game diagnostic and setting, not a guaranteed improvement for every title.
Can a higher monitor refresh rate fix stuttering?
Not by itself. Refresh rate is the display’s update capability; FPS is the game’s rendered output. Check VRR and frame pacing separately.
What should I do if stutter started after a driver update?
Record the timing, try the documented rollback option if available, and test again. If rollback is not appropriate, install the driver intended for the exact laptop model and operating system.
