What you need before changing the settings
The instructions below assume that Gboard is the keyboard displayed when you tap a text field. Exact names and locations can vary by Android release, phone manufacturer, Gboard version, and language. Google documents the keyboard-based route from an active text field rather than one universal Settings-app path for every Android phone.
- Install or update Gboard if it is not your current keyboard.
- Open an app with a text field, such as a messaging, notes, email, or browser app.
- Tap the field so the keyboard appears.
- Have the desired language ready to add if it is not already listed in Gboard.
- If you are checking Pixel advanced voice typing, use an eligible Pixel device and keep Android, Gboard, and Android System Intelligence updated.
A missing microphone icon does not necessarily mean the phone lacks voice typing. The icon can be hidden in the keyboard toolbar, the feature can be disabled, or Gboard can lack microphone permission.

Turn Gboard voice typing on or off
Open the Voice typing control
- Open an app that contains a text field and tap inside the field to show Gboard.
- Tap the keyboard’s Settings control. Depending on the layout, it may be visible on the toolbar.
- If you do not see Settings, open the keyboard’s features menu, choose More, and then choose Settings.
- Open Voice typing.
- Turn voice typing on or off. On eligible Pixel phones, this area can also include Faster voice typing and Advanced voice typing.
The switch controls whether Gboard offers its microphone-based dictation feature. It does not grant Android microphone permission by itself. If the switch is on but dictation cannot hear you, check the permission separately.
Start and stop dictation
- Tap the microphone icon on Gboard.
- Wait for the listening prompt, then speak at a normal pace. Words should appear in the active text field.
- Tap the microphone again or close the keyboard to stop ordinary dictation.
Punctuation commands and recognition behavior can vary by language. If the microphone icon is unavailable, follow the permission and troubleshooting checks later in this guide instead of repeatedly tapping the keyboard toolbar.
Change the language used for voice typing
Gboard’s active language determines which keyboard layout and recognition language are being used. This is separate from Android’s primary device language, which changes system menus and other device-wide text.

- Show Gboard in any text field.
- Open Settings. If the control is hidden, use the keyboard features menu, choose More, and then choose Settings.
- Open the keyboard’s language section and choose the option to add a keyboard or language.
- Select the language and, where offered, the preferred layout.
- Return to the text field. Gboard now has that language available for switching.
The exact language-menu wording can differ between Gboard releases. Adding a language does not automatically make it the active dictation language.
Switch the active Gboard language
- With Gboard visible, tap the globe key to cycle through enabled languages.
- If there is no globe key, touch and hold the space bar, then select the language you want.
- Tap the microphone and dictate after the selected language is shown on the keyboard.
Use this method when you regularly move between languages while keeping Android’s menus in one primary language. It changes Gboard’s current keyboard and voice-typing context, not the language of the whole phone.

Change Android’s primary device language
- Open Android Settings.
- Go to System > Languages & input > Languages.
- Choose Add a language if the language is not listed.
- Move the desired language to the primary position using the on-screen reorder control.
On some phones, Languages & input is shown outside System, or the labels are slightly different. This setting affects system-wide language order. It does not replace the need to add and select a language in Gboard when you want to dictate with that language.
Advanced voice typing has a matching-language requirement
Google’s advanced voice typing documentation requires the primary Gboard language and the primary Android device language to match. If advanced voice typing is missing or will not activate, first make the same language primary in both places. The documented advanced-language list includes English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish.
Standard Gboard talk-to-text supports more languages than the advanced feature, but support is not universal. A language can be available as a keyboard while lacking standard voice typing or advanced voice typing support. Treat the language list shown on your own device as the practical availability check.
| Setting | What it changes | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Gboard language | The active keyboard layout and the language context used when you tap the microphone. | Switch dictation languages without changing Android’s menus. |
| Android primary language | The device-wide language order used by system interfaces and apps that follow Android’s language settings. | Change the phone’s main interface language or satisfy advanced voice typing’s matching requirement. |
| Advanced voice typing language | Only the language combinations supported by an eligible Pixel feature; the primary Gboard and device languages must match. | Use Pixel’s advanced, primarily on-device dictation where supported. |
Standard talk-to-text versus Pixel advanced voice typing
These are different processing modes, not two names for the same privacy behavior. Standard Gboard talk-to-text and Pixel advanced voice typing have different eligibility rules and Google’s documented handling of spoken input differs.
| Characteristic | Standard Gboard talk-to-text | Pixel advanced voice typing |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is found | Gboard’s Voice typing settings and microphone button. | Gboard voice-typing settings on eligible Pixel devices; the menu can include Faster voice typing and Advanced voice typing. |
| Device eligibility | Available wherever the installed Gboard and Android configuration supports the selected language. | Limited to eligible Pixel devices, supported languages, and required software versions or updates. |
| Language rule | Language support is broader than advanced voice typing but not universal. | Primary Gboard and primary Android device languages must match; documented languages are English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. |
| Stated voice processing | Google says voice used for Gboard talk-to-text is sent to Google for transcription. | Google says the text you speak stays on the device and is not sent to Google servers except when you use Fix it or detailed edits. |
| Editing exception | No advanced-mode exception applies; this row does not change the standard talk-to-text behavior. | When Fix it or detailed edits are used, Google says the voice-command transcript and the full text in the input field are sent to Google servers to process the request. |
Do not apply the advanced-voice-typing description to ordinary Gboard dictation, and do not treat an Assistant privacy switch as a replacement for either Gboard setting. Google’s statements describe the named features separately.

Control microphone access
Android permission determines whether Gboard can use the microphone at all. If the microphone button is missing, tapping it produces a permission error, or speech is not detected, check this before changing language settings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Android Settings.
- Go to Apps > Gboard > Permissions > Microphone.
- Choose Allow only while using the app, or the equivalent microphone permission label on your Android version.
- Return to a text field and test the Gboard microphone.
Android manufacturers can use slightly different labels or place permission controls under a broader privacy menu. The important check is that Gboard, not merely the browser or messaging app, has microphone access while it is being used.
If Android shows a device-wide microphone privacy toggle, it must also allow microphone access. A per-app Gboard permission cannot override a global microphone block.
Manage Gboard personalization and learned data
Turn personalization on or off
- Display Gboard in a text field.
- Open the keyboard’s Settings. Use More > Settings if the control is not visible.
- Open Privacy.
- Under Improve Gboard and voice typing, turn Personalise for you on or off.
Google says that when this personalization option is on, transcripts of speech and typing are saved on the device. This setting concerns personalization data; it is not the same as microphone permission and does not change the documented standard talk-to-text transmission rule.
Delete words and other learned data
- Open Gboard’s Settings > Privacy.
- Select Delete learned words and data.
- Confirm the deletion when prompted.
Deleting learned data can remove words and typing information Gboard acquired for personalization. It does not revoke microphone permission, change the active language, or convert standard talk-to-text into on-device processing.

Understand what is sent to Google
Standard Gboard dictation
Google’s Gboard troubleshooting guidance states: “If you use Gboard’s talk-to-text feature, your voice is sent to Google for transcription.” Therefore, switching off Personalise for you should not be described as a promise that ordinary Gboard dictation never leaves the device. The two controls address different functions.
Pixel advanced voice typing
For advanced voice typing, Google states: “The text you speak stays on your device and isn’t sent to Google servers except when you use the ‘Fix it’ or detailed edits features.” Those editing features are the stated exception. Google also says that using them sends the voice-command transcript and the full text in the input field to Google servers so the request can be processed.
Advanced voice typing is therefore not a universal Android privacy mode. It depends on Pixel eligibility, supported languages, matching primary languages, and the relevant software updates. A non-Pixel phone, an unsupported language, or ordinary Gboard talk-to-text should not be assumed to have the same on-device behavior.
Assistant personalized speech recognition is separate
Google’s Assistant documentation distinguishes Personalized speech recognition from Gboard’s voice-typing controls. Disabling Assistant personalized speech recognition does not affect Gboard Assistant Voice Typing, Voice and Audio Activity, Voice Match, Personal Results, or the other named data settings. If your goal is to change Gboard dictation, make the change in Gboard and Android permissions rather than relying on the Assistant switch.
Fix the most common voice-typing problems
The microphone icon is missing
- Open Gboard settings from an active text field and confirm Voice typing is on.
- Use the keyboard features menu and look under More; the icon may not be pinned to the first toolbar row.
- Check Settings > Apps > Gboard > Permissions > Microphone.
- Check Android’s device-wide microphone privacy control if your phone provides one.
- Update Gboard, then reopen the text field.
The microphone appears, but no words are entered
- Confirm Gboard has microphone permission while in use.
- Speak only after the listening prompt appears.
- Verify that the active Gboard language is the language you are speaking.
- Try a different text field to determine whether the problem is limited to one app.
- Restart the phone if the microphone state appears stuck.
The wrong language is recognized
- Open Gboard’s language list and add the desired language if necessary.
- Switch to it with the globe key or by holding the space bar.
- Tap the microphone only after the correct language is active.
- If you are using advanced voice typing, make that same language primary in both Gboard and Android’s device-language list.
Adding a language without selecting it leaves the previous language active, which is why installation alone may not solve recognition errors.
Best Value
Advanced voice typing is not listed
- Confirm that the phone is an eligible Pixel model. The feature is not documented as a general option for every Android device.
- Check that the primary Gboard and Android device languages match.
- Update Gboard and Android System Intelligence.
- After setting up a Pixel, allow time for required updates to arrive before concluding that the feature is unavailable.
- Restart the device after updates and test again.
Language support and eligibility are limited. A missing advanced switch can be an expected compatibility limitation rather than a damaged installation.
An update or setup change did not take effect
- Install available Gboard and Android System Intelligence updates.
- Restart the phone.
- Check connectivity when the problem involves downloading or completing an update.
- Reopen Gboard from an active text field and check the Voice typing menu again.
Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically points to updates, restarting, and connectivity for certain update-related problems. It does not establish one universal recovery sequence for every Android manufacturer.
Choose the right combination of settings
You want ordinary dictation in another language
- Add the language in Gboard.
- Switch to it with the globe key or space-bar language picker.
- Keep Voice typing enabled and grant Gboard microphone permission.
There is no need to change Android’s primary device language unless you also want the system interface changed or you need to satisfy advanced voice typing’s matching rule.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You want Pixel advanced voice typing
- Confirm the Pixel device is eligible and fully updated.
- Update Gboard and Android System Intelligence.
- Set the same language as primary in Gboard and Android.
- Enable Advanced voice typing in Gboard’s Voice typing menu.
- Remember that Fix it and detailed edits have the documented server-processing exception.
You want the fewest personalization features
- In Gboard, open Settings > Privacy.
- Turn Personalise for you off.
- Use Delete learned words and data if you want to remove existing learned words and data.
- Review Gboard’s microphone permission separately and leave it allowed only if you still want dictation.
This combination reduces on-device personalization data but does not change the statement that standard Gboard talk-to-text sends voice to Google for transcription.
You want to stop Gboard from using the microphone
- Open Settings > Apps > Gboard > Permissions > Microphone.
- Deny microphone access or choose the closest equivalent on your Android version.
- Optionally turn off Gboard’s Voice typing switch as well.
Denying permission is the decisive app-level control. Turning off the Gboard feature alone may hide or disable the button, while permission determines whether Gboard can access the microphone.
A concise privacy checklist
- Can Gboard hear me? Check Gboard’s Android microphone permission and any device-wide microphone block.
- Is standard dictation sent for transcription? Google says ordinary Gboard talk-to-text sends your voice to Google.
- Is personalization saving data? Review Privacy > Improve Gboard and voice typing > Personalise for you.
- Can I remove learned words? Use Privacy > Delete learned words and data.
- Is processing primarily on-device? That description applies to Pixel advanced voice typing where eligible, with Fix it and detailed edits as the stated exceptions.
- Will Assistant’s speech setting change Gboard? No. Assistant personalized speech recognition is documented as a separate control.
Bottom line: change the setting that matches the problem
Use Gboard’s Voice typing menu to enable dictation, the globe key or space bar to switch Gboard languages, and Android’s language list only when you need to change the device-wide language or meet advanced voice typing’s matching requirement. Treat microphone permission, personalization, learned-data deletion, standard transcription, Pixel advanced voice typing, and Assistant speech recognition as separate privacy decisions. That separation prevents a language change from being mistaken for a privacy change and prevents an Assistant setting from being mistaken for Gboard’s voice-typing control.
