Most Sony ULT TOWER 5 Bluetooth failures are fixed by selecting the BLUETOOTH function, entering pairing mode with the speaker’s BLUETOOTH button, and choosing ULT TOWER 5 on the phone or computer. Keep a phone within 1 m (3.2 ft) during setup. A double-flashing Bluetooth indicator means pairing mode; a slowly flashing indicator means the speaker is searching; a steady light means a Bluetooth connection is active. If pairing still fails, check whether Bluetooth was disabled on the speaker, disconnect an older source that reconnected automatically, then restart before considering initialization.
Pairing and connection are different stages
Pairing is the one-time registration that lets a phone or computer remember the speaker. Connection is the active wireless link used to carry audio after registration. A device can therefore be paired but not currently connected, connected but sending sound to another output, or unable to pair because the speaker is not discoverable.

The instructions below apply to the Sony ULT TOWER 5, model SRS-ULT500. Confirm that model before using the button combinations, because Sony’s controls are model-specific. Sony’s current support page identifies the model and provides the latest Help Guide: SRS-ULT500 / ULT TOWER 5 support.
Start with the speaker’s mode and indicator
- Turn on the speaker.
- Rotate the FUNCTION dial to BLUETOOTH.
- Look at the Bluetooth indicator before trying to pair.
| Indicator state | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Double flashing | No pairing information is available and pairing mode is ready. | Open Bluetooth settings on the source and select ULT TOWER 5. |
| Slow flashing | The speaker is searching for a Bluetooth connection. | Use the already paired device, or press the speaker’s BLUETOOTH button to start a new pairing attempt. |
| Steady lit | A Bluetooth connection has been established. | Check which source is connected and select the speaker as the audio output if there is no sound. |
| Off | Bluetooth may be deactivated on the speaker, or another function may be selected. | Select BLUETOOTH and, if necessary, reactivate Bluetooth with ECHO and LIGHT. |
For a new phone, computer, or additional source, press the speaker’s BLUETOOTH button while the function is set to BLUETOOTH. Wait for the voice guidance to say “Pairing” and for the indicator to double-flash. Pairing mode normally ends after about five minutes, so repeat this step if setup takes longer.

When the ULT TOWER 5 does not appear on a phone
Put the speaker back into pairing mode
- Keep the speaker powered on and turn the FUNCTION dial to BLUETOOTH.
- Press the BLUETOOTH button. Wait for the “Pairing” voice prompt and double flashing.
- On the phone, turn Bluetooth off and on if the device list has not refreshed.
- Search again and choose ULT TOWER 5.
Sony’s phone procedure is documented for both Android phones and iPhones in its Android and iPhone Bluetooth connection guide. Keep the phone within 1 m (3.2 ft) of the speaker while pairing. Sony also recommends AC power or a sufficiently charged built-in battery so the speaker does not shut down during registration.
Pair an Android phone or iPhone
- Set the speaker to BLUETOOTH and press its BLUETOOTH button until “Pairing” is announced and the indicator double-flashes.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and enable Bluetooth.
- Select ULT TOWER 5 from the available devices.
- If a passkey is requested, enter 0000.
- Wait for the indicator to change from flashing to steady and for the connection notification sound.
If the name never appears, the speaker may have left pairing mode, the phone may be too far away, or Bluetooth may be disabled on the speaker. Repeat the BLUETOOTH-button step rather than repeatedly tapping an old entry in the phone’s list. If an old “ULT TOWER 5” record is corrupted, use the phone’s Forget or Remove this device command, then enter pairing mode and register it again.
Pair a Windows 11 computer
Sony’s Windows instructions cover Windows 11. The computer must have working Bluetooth hardware and its Bluetooth radio enabled. Sony notes that the computer instructions are examples; not every computer has been tested, and manufacturer-built or specially configured systems can behave differently.

- Wake the PC and open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on, select Add device, choose Bluetooth, and wait for the device list.
- Select ULT TOWER 5 and complete the Windows prompts.
- Open the Windows sound controls and choose ULT TOWER 5 as the output device. Make sure the PC is not muted.
The model-specific procedure is in Sony’s Windows Bluetooth connection guide. If Windows says the speaker is connected but audio remains silent, the pairing stage has succeeded; the usual remaining issue is output routing. Select the speaker explicitly in the taskbar sound output list and in the application that is playing audio.
Pair a Mac and select it as the output
Sony’s Mac guide covers macOS 12.7 or later. Keep the speaker in pairing mode while adding it; a slowly flashing indicator by itself does not mean that a new device can register.
- Set the FUNCTION dial to BLUETOOTH and press the BLUETOOTH button until “Pairing” is announced.
- On the Mac, open System Settings > Bluetooth (or the Bluetooth pane in System Preferences on an older supported layout).
- Find ULT TOWER 5 and select Connect.
- Open System Settings > Sound > Output and select ULT TOWER 5.
Use Sony’s Mac Bluetooth connection guide if the labels on your macOS version differ. A Mac can report a successful Bluetooth connection while continuing to send sound to its internal speakers, a display, or headphones, so verify the Output Device separately.

“Connected” but there is no sound
- Choose the speaker as the output. Pairing only registers the device. On Windows select ULT TOWER 5 in the sound output control; on macOS select it under Sound > Output; on a phone choose it from the media-output picker if another device is active.
- Check mute and volume at both ends. Make sure the source application, operating system, and speaker are not muted and that the speaker volume is audible.
- Check the active function. The speaker must be on BLUETOOTH for Bluetooth audio. If the FUNCTION dial was moved to another input, the Bluetooth registration can remain intact while that source is no longer selected for playback.
- Look for another connected source. The speaker can maintain Bluetooth connections with two devices, but it plays music from only one paired device at a time. Stop playback on the other source or disconnect it before testing.
- Reconnect instead of pairing repeatedly. If the source was already registered, select ULT TOWER 5 from its saved Bluetooth devices. Pressing the pairing button every time can create unnecessary new pairing attempts.
The ULT TOWER 5 supports Bluetooth 5.3 and the A2DP, AVRCP, SPP, and PBP profiles according to Sony’s current specifications. Bluetooth 5.3 does not guarantee identical behavior with every phone or computer: the source’s operating system, drivers, profile support, and audio routing still affect playback.

A previously connected device can reconnect automatically when Bluetooth is enabled on both the device and the speaker. This can make a new phone appear unable to take over even though pairing is working.
- On the old phone or computer, turn Bluetooth off, disconnect ULT TOWER 5, or choose Forget if you no longer want automatic reconnection.
- On the intended source, open its saved Bluetooth devices and select ULT TOWER 5.
- If the intended source is not yet registered, press the speaker’s BLUETOOTH button to enter pairing mode and add it.
The speaker can connect to two Bluetooth devices at once, but only one can supply music at a time. Pairing a new source does not automatically choose that source for playback. Also note that Stereo Pair and Party Chain disable multipoint operation; disconnect those configurations before diagnosing an ordinary two-device connection.
Check whether Bluetooth was disabled on the speaker
Bluetooth is enabled when the speaker leaves the factory, but it can be switched off. When it is disabled, pairing and the Sound Connect app are unavailable, so changing settings on the phone cannot correct the condition.
- With the speaker on, press and hold ECHO and LIGHT simultaneously for about five seconds.
- When Bluetooth is deactivated, its indicator goes out.
- Repeat the same five-second hold to activate Bluetooth again. The indicator lights when the function is enabled.
- Return the FUNCTION dial to BLUETOOTH and enter pairing mode with the BLUETOOTH button.
Follow Sony’s model-specific instructions in Activating or deactivating the BLUETOOTH function. Do not interpret an unlit Bluetooth indicator as proof of a dead radio until this toggle has been checked.

Restart before you erase anything
A restart and an initialization are not interchangeable. Restart is the low-disruption recovery step; initialization is a factory-style reset that removes every Bluetooth registration.

| Action | Use it when | Pairing information | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Re-enter pairing mode | The speaker is not discoverable or the five-minute pairing window expired. | Preserved. | Only the discovery process is restarted. |
| Toggle Bluetooth | Bluetooth was disabled on the speaker. | Preserved. | The Bluetooth radio is turned on or off. |
| Restart | The speaker is unresponsive or pairing trouble remains after the basic checks. | Sony says it is retained. | The speaker powers off and back on; some settings, including volume, function, or sound settings, may change. |
| Initialize | Restart did not resolve an operating problem. | Deleted. | Changed settings return to defaults and every Bluetooth device must be paired again. |
Restart the speaker
- Press and hold the speaker’s power button for about ten seconds.
- The speaker turns off and then turns back on.
- Wait for startup to finish, select BLUETOOTH, and try the normal reconnection or pairing procedure.
Sony documents this procedure in Restarting the speaker. Because pairing information remains, a restart should be attempted before deleting saved devices.
Initialize only when restarting fails
- Make sure the speaker is turned on. Initialization cannot be performed while it is off.
- Press and hold the playback button and the ULT button together for at least five seconds.
- Release them when the speaker turns off.
- On every phone or computer that previously listed the speaker, use Forget, Remove device, or the equivalent Bluetooth command.
- Turn the speaker back to BLUETOOTH, enter pairing mode, and register each source again.
Sony’s exact Help Guide instruction is: “While the speaker is turned on, press and hold the playback button and the ULT button on the speaker for 5 seconds or more until the speaker turns off.” See Initializing the speaker for the complete procedure. Initialization restores default settings and erases all pairing information, so it is the highest-disruption option.
Understand the pairing limit and multipoint behavior
Sony says the ULT TOWER 5 can pair with up to eight Bluetooth devices and connect with two devices simultaneously. Those are different limits: storing eight registrations does not mean eight active audio streams. Even with two active connections, music comes from only one source at a time. Pause or disconnect the other source when testing audio so it cannot retain playback control.
If you use Stereo Pair or Party Chain, multipoint operation is disabled. A speaker configured in one of those modes may therefore behave differently from a standalone unit. Exit the linked-speaker configuration before troubleshooting a phone that will not connect, then restore it after ordinary Bluetooth operation works.
Source-side checks that prevent wasted resets
Before initializing, verify that the source itself is ready. On a phone, Bluetooth must be enabled and the saved ULT TOWER 5 entry should be selected for reconnection. On Windows 11, confirm the PC has Bluetooth hardware, the radio is on, and the speaker is selected in both the system sound picker and any application-specific output menu. On a Mac running macOS 12.7 or later, check both Bluetooth connection status and Sound > Output.
Remove only a stale or corrupted source entry when necessary. Forgetting the speaker on one phone does not erase registrations stored in the speaker; initialization does. If a device list contains several similarly named entries, remove the obsolete one and register the exact name ULT TOWER 5 while the indicator is double-flashing.

Keep the source close during registration even if normal listening will occur farther away. Sony specifies 1 m (3.2 ft) for the phone procedure. Keep the speaker on AC power or adequately charged, and allow the five-minute pairing window to complete. These simple conditions rule out distance, shutdown, and timeout before more disruptive recovery actions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The SRS-ULT500 specification lists Bluetooth 5.3 and support for A2DP, AVRCP, SPP, and PBP profiles. A Bluetooth version number is not a guarantee that every source will behave identically. Phone and computer operating-system versions, Bluetooth drivers, profile implementation, and audio-output routing all influence the result. Sony’s computer procedures are examples and do not represent testing of every manufacturer-built or specially configured system.
No adapter, cable, or special repair tool is required for the documented pairing recovery steps. Use the speaker controls and the source device’s Bluetooth menus first. If a source lacks working Bluetooth hardware, that is a source-side limitation rather than a reason to repeatedly initialize the speaker.
Use this symptom-to-action checklist
| Symptom | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| ULT TOWER 5 is absent from the device list | Select BLUETOOTH, press the speaker’s BLUETOOTH button for double-flashing “Pairing” mode, move the source within 1 m, and search again. |
| Pairing prompt never appears | Check that Bluetooth was not disabled with ECHO + LIGHT; reactivate it, then re-enter pairing mode. |
| Pairing worked once but the source will not reconnect | Select the saved ULT TOWER 5 entry on the source, confirm the speaker is on BLUETOOTH, and disconnect any old source that auto-reconnected. |
| Computer says connected but audio comes from its own speakers | Select ULT TOWER 5 as the operating system’s output device and check the application’s output and mute state. |
| A new source cannot take over | Disconnect the old source. Remember that two devices may be connected, but only one plays audio; Stereo Pair and Party Chain disable multipoint. |
| Speaker is frozen or controls do not respond | Restart by holding power for about ten seconds. Initialize only if the problem remains. |
| Nothing changes after initialization | Forget the old speaker entry on the source, pair again, and then use Sony support if the failure persists. |
When to contact Sony
If the documented mode, distance, source-selection, Bluetooth-toggle, restart, and initialization steps fail, use the SRS-ULT500 support page’s current Help Guide, troubleshooting, repair, or contact options: Sony SRS-ULT500 support. Sony also provides a general wireless speaker troubleshooting guide.
A failed pairing attempt alone does not prove a hardware defect. The source device’s Bluetooth implementation, drivers, operating-system version, and profile support can also be responsible. Tell support which indicator state you see, whether the speaker appears in the source’s list, whether another source reconnects, and whether a restart or initialization changed the behavior. That information separates a discovery problem from an audio-routing problem and gives support a reproducible starting point.

What passkey should I use when pairing?
If the phone or computer requests a passkey, Sony specifies 0000.
Why does the speaker say connected but play no sound?
Connection only establishes the wireless link. Select ULT TOWER 5 as the output on Windows, macOS, or the phone’s media-output picker, then check application volume and mute settings.
How do I stop an old phone from reconnecting?
Turn Bluetooth off on the old phone, disconnect ULT TOWER 5, or remove its saved entry. Then select or pair the speaker from the intended source.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How many devices can the ULT TOWER 5 remember?
Sony says it can pair with up to eight devices and connect to two simultaneously. Only one connected device supplies music at a time.
How do I turn Bluetooth back on at the speaker?
With the speaker on, hold ECHO and LIGHT together for about five seconds. Repeat the same hold to reactivate Bluetooth if it was disabled; the indicator lights when enabled.
Will restarting erase my pairings?
No. Hold the power button for about ten seconds to restart; Sony says pairing information is retained, although some settings such as volume, function, or sound may change.
When should I initialize the speaker?
Only after restarting fails to resolve an operating problem. While the speaker is on, hold playback and ULT for at least five seconds until it turns off. Initialization restores defaults and deletes all pairing information, so forget the old entry on each source and pair again.
