Change a Sponge server’s plugin location by editing the plugins-dir setting in config/sponge/global.conf, inside sponge { general { } }. Point the setting at the directory you want, create that directory, move the appropriate plugin JAR files, and restart the server. The default location depends on the Sponge API version: API 7 documentation uses ${CANONICAL_MODS_DIR}/plugins (normally mods/plugins), while the Sponge 8 quick start describes /plugins for API 8 and later. Check your server’s API version before moving anything.

The setting that controls Sponge’s plugin directory
Sponge reads an additional plugin search path from a global configuration key named plugins-dir. The key belongs in the general block nested inside the top-level sponge block. It accepts either a relative path or an absolute path.

}A relative value is resolved from the server’s execution root, usually the directory from which the server is launched. An absolute value points directly to a folder elsewhere on the machine. The setting changes where Sponge searches for normal plugins; it does not relocate every kind of Sponge-related file.
Why the default location can look different
Sponge’s published installation material does not describe one universal default for every API generation. The API version is therefore the first fact to establish.

The discrepancy is not a reason to guess. Look at the API version, the generated configuration, and the server log. If your existing plugins load from the current directory, that directory is the practical baseline for your migration.
Before changing the folder
- Identify the API and platform. Record whether the server uses SpongeForge or SpongeVanilla and which Sponge API line it runs. Configuration behavior and defaults can vary by build.
- Back up the server. Stop the server and copy
config/sponge/global.conf, the current plugin directory, and any plugin configuration you cannot easily recreate. - Confirm the launch directory. A relative path such as
pluginsis interpreted from the server’s execution root, not necessarily from the directory where your file manager happens to be open. - Plan for downtime. Editing while the server is writing configuration can overwrite your change or leave a partially written file.
- Separate plugin types. Ordinary Sponge plugins can use
plugins-dir. Mixin-based plugins must remain inmods, regardless of this setting.
Locate and edit global.conf
Sponge 8 and newer layouts
On Sponge 8, the global file is normally created at config/sponge/global.conf in the server folder. The file is HOCON-formatted, so braces define sections and strings are commonly enclosed in quotation marks. Do not rename the file: Sponge looks for global.conf.
Other builds
Older or customized installations can place the equivalent global configuration elsewhere. Use the file generated by that build and search it for plugins-dir or the sponge and general sections. If the key is absent, add it inside the existing general block rather than creating a second top-level sponge block.
Editing safely
- Stop the server cleanly and wait for the process to exit.
- Open the relevant
global.confin a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. - Find
sponge {, then itsgeneral {subsection. - Change the existing
plugins-dirvalue, or add the key if it is not present. - Save the file while preserving the braces, quotation marks, and indentation.
A valid minimal change looks like this:

If your build does not expand that variable, use a plain relative path such as plugins or an absolute filesystem path instead. The variable’s behavior on current SpongeVanilla builds is not established, so test it rather than assuming SpongeForge and SpongeVanilla resolve it identically.

Choose a target path
Keep plugins under mods
For an API 7-style layout, set the value to the path that resolves to the existing or desired mods/plugins directory. Using the documented default expression preserves that relationship:

Use a top-level game directory
If you want a folder beside mods, config, and the world directories, set a value that resolves to the game root’s plugins folder:

plugins-dir="plugins"Use an absolute path
An absolute path is useful when several server instances share a managed storage location, but it increases the chance of accidentally sharing incompatible plugin files between servers. Use the path syntax required by the operating system and ensure the account running the server has read and write access.
Move the files without moving the wrong things
- Create the target directory before starting Sponge. Match the spelling and capitalization of the value in
global.conf. - Move only the ordinary Sponge plugin JARs that you want Sponge to discover from the new location.
- Leave mixin-based plugins in the server’s
modsdirectory. Changingplugins-dirdoes not make those plugins load from another folder. - Keep each plugin’s existing JAR filename unless the plugin author requires a particular version name.
- Do not move
configfiles merely because the plugin JAR moved. Plugin configuration is controlled separately. - Check ownership and permissions if the server runs under a service account. The process must be able to traverse the parent directories and read the JAR files.
Moving the JARs is not enough by itself: Sponge must be started with the edited configuration before the new location is used.

Restart or reload?
A full restart is the safer and most predictable method. Sponge’s stable installation guidance says the server must be restarted to change plugins, and a restart also gives every plugin a clean initialization cycle. Use this sequence:
- Stop the server.
- Edit
global.confand create the destination directory. - Move the plugin JARs.
- Start the server and watch the console during plugin discovery.
Sponge 8 global-configuration documentation also describes /sponge reload -g as a way to reload global configuration. Treat that as an alternative for configuration changes, not as a substitute for a restart when you are moving or replacing plugins. A reload may not unload already initialized code cleanly, and it does not remove the operational risks of changing plugin files on a running server.

Verify that Sponge is using the new directory
Check the startup log
After the restart, inspect the console or latest log for plugin discovery, loading, and any path-related warning. A successful startup should show the expected plugins being discovered without a “file not found,” permission, or malformed-configuration error. The exact wording differs by Sponge and platform version, so use the plugin names and the absence of errors as the primary checks.
Check in-game
Join the server with an account that can run Sponge commands and verify that the moved plugin is present using the plugin-list command available in your build. Then exercise a harmless feature from that plugin. A plugin appearing in a list but failing when used can indicate a dependency or configuration problem rather than a directory problem.

Do not leave duplicate copies during testing. If the same JAR exists in both the old and new directories, you can mistake a successful load from the old location for proof that plugins-dir works. Keep one copy in the intended directory, restart, and review the log again.
Troubleshooting plugins that do not load
The server ignores the setting
- Verify the filename is exactly
global.confand that it is in the configuration directory used by your build. - Confirm
plugins-diris nested undersponge { general { } }, not under a similarly named plugin section. - Check for missing braces, an unclosed quote, or a typographical error in the key name.
- Make sure you restarted after saving. If you used a reload, perform a complete restart before drawing a conclusion.
- Temporarily replace a variable-based value with a simple relative or absolute path to determine whether variable expansion is the issue.
The path resolves to the wrong directory
Relative paths follow the server’s execution root. A hosting panel may launch each instance from a directory different from the panel’s file-browser root. Put a test file or the plugin directory in the location you believe is the execution root, then verify the startup log. An absolute path can remove ambiguity, provided permissions are correct.
Only some plugins load
- Check whether the missing files are mixin-based; those belong in
modsand are intentionally unaffected byplugins-dir. - Look for dependency, API-version, Java-version, or platform compatibility errors in the log.
- Make sure the JARs are not still compressed inside another archive and that their filenames were not truncated during upload.
- Remove duplicate copies from the previous location and test again.
The server reports a configuration parse error
Restore the backup, then reapply only the single setting. HOCON is forgiving in some areas but still requires balanced braces and valid quoted strings. Keep the value on one line, use ordinary straight quotation marks, and avoid adding comments inside the value. Start the server with the smallest valid change before making other configuration edits.
SpongeVanilla behaves differently
A historical SpongeVanilla issue concerned support for changing the plugin directory with plugins-dir, and an older report suggested that a ${CANONICAL_GAME_DIR} value worked in SpongeForge but was not read by SpongeVanilla. Those reports do not establish the behavior of current builds. If you run SpongeVanilla, test the exact version with a plain relative or absolute path, preserve your backup, and rely on the startup log rather than assuming variable support.

plugins-dir tells Sponge where to search for plugin JARs. It does not relocate plugin-generated settings, saved data, logs, or other configuration files. Those locations are controlled by separate configuration, including the distinct config-dir setting in guides that document it. If your goal is to move a plugin’s settings rather than its JAR, investigate that setting separately and back up the plugin’s existing data first.
A repeatable migration checklist
- API version and platform recorded.
- Server stopped and backup completed.
- Correct global configuration file identified.
plugins-dirplaced undersponge { general { } }.- Destination directory created with matching spelling and permissions.
- Ordinary plugin JARs moved; mixin-based JARs left in
mods. - No duplicate plugin copies left in the old directory.
- Server restarted, not merely assumed to have reloaded.
- Startup log and in-game plugin list checked.
If the migration fails, restore the original directory and backed-up configuration, restart, and then test one variable at a time: path syntax, directory permissions, plugin type, and build compatibility.
