For a self-hosted Abiotic Factor dedicated server, change the browser name with the -SteamServerName launch argument and restart the server. For a rented server, stop it, edit the panel’s Server Name value (usually under Startup or a command-line manager), save, and start it again. Do not put the name in SandboxSettings.ini; that file controls gameplay rules.
Choose the method that matches your server
The correct location depends on who controls the server’s startup command. A machine you administer exposes the launch line directly. A game-hosting company normally stores that line in a web panel and may overwrite manual file edits when the service starts.

Panel names and menu locations can change as hosts update their control software. If a label differs, look for the setting that generates the server’s startup command rather than a gameplay configuration file.
Rename a self-hosted dedicated server
1. Stop the server first
Shut down the dedicated server cleanly before changing its launch command. Editing while the process is running can leave the old command active, cause the service to rewrite files, or make it unclear which instance you restarted. Confirm that the server process has exited before continuing.

2. Find the command that starts the server
Locate the shortcut, batch file, shell script, service definition, container entrypoint, or other mechanism that launches the Abiotic Factor dedicated server. The name must be added to the command that actually starts the running instance. Changing an unused script will have no effect.
If several server instances run on the same machine, identify the one associated with the world and ports your players use. A successful rename on a different instance will look like a failed change in the browser.
3. Add the -SteamServerName argument
Append the argument to the launch line and put the desired display name in quotes when it contains spaces:
-SteamServerName="Your Server Name"The value after the equals sign is the name players should see in the server browser. Keep the argument as one launch parameter. Quoting the value prevents spaces from being interpreted as separate command-line items by the operating system or wrapper script.

Do not remove existing arguments while adding the name. A typical dedicated-server command may also include options such as -PORT=7777, -QueryPort=27015, -MaxServerPlayers=, -AdminPassword=, or -WorldSaveName=. Those options perform different jobs; retain the values your server already needs.
4. Save the launcher and start the server
Save the shortcut, script, service definition, or container configuration, then start the server through that same mechanism. A restart is required because the launch argument is read when the dedicated-server process initializes; changing a file on disk does not retroactively alter a running process.
5. Check the public listing
After the server finishes starting, refresh the in-game server browser from a client outside the host machine when possible. Search for the exact spelling you entered. If the old name remains, allow time for the listing to refresh, then verify that the process was started by the edited launcher and that no second instance is answering on the query port.
Rename a hosted server in a control panel
BisectHosting: use Startup
- Stop the server from the hosting panel and wait until its status shows that it is offline.
- Open the Startup tab.
- Find the Server Name field and replace the existing value with the new browser name.
- Save the change.
- Start the server and wait for it to complete startup before checking the listing.
The panel is the authoritative place for this type of hosted setup because it generates the command used to launch the service. Editing an unrelated configuration file can be discarded when the panel starts the server.

Citadel Servers: use Commandline Manager
- Stop the server and confirm that it is no longer running.
- Open Commandline Manager.
- Select Active Modify for the command line used by the server.
- Change the Server Name value.
- Save the command-line configuration, then start or restart the server.
If the panel has several command lines, modify the one marked active. A saved value on an inactive profile will not be used by the next startup.
Other hosts
Look for a startup editor, command-line manager, or a field explicitly labeled Server Name. The exact navigation is host-specific, but the underlying setting is the same launch argument used by self-hosted servers. Stop the service before editing, save through the panel, and restart from the panel so the host applies the stored command.

AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds/<WorldName>/SandboxSettings.iniThat file should begin with the section header [SandboxSettings]. Back it up before changing gameplay values, but do not add a server-name entry there expecting the browser listing to change. Altering sandbox rules can affect the world without changing what players see in the server list.
What about ServerSettings.ini or another INI file?
Some hosting guides expose a ServerSettings.ini file through a panel’s Configuration Files area. A third-party list also shows a ServerName entry in that file, alongside administrative settings. That key is not confirmed by an official developer reference in the available documentation, so it should not be treated as the dependable rename method.
Likewise, a generic ServerName= entry in config.ini and a separate path under /AbioticFactor/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ have been suggested in third-party material, but their applicability is unverified. Rely on -SteamServerName or the host panel’s field instead. If a provider instructs you to use an INI key, ask support which startup argument their panel ultimately generates and whether the setting survives a restart.

Safe change procedure
Use this sequence whenever you rename the server, whether you edit a local launcher or a web panel:
- Record the current name and the launcher or panel profile that starts the live instance.
- Stop the server completely.
- Back up any file you intend to edit, especially files under the world’s save directory.
- Change only the name setting:
-SteamServerName="New Name"locally, or Server Name in the active hosted profile. - Save the change in the same tool that starts the server.
- Start the server and wait for startup to finish.
- Verify the new name from the server browser and, if necessary, from a second client or network.
This order prevents a running process from continuing to use the old command and reduces the chance that a host panel will overwrite a manual edit.
Troubleshoot a name that does not change
The browser still shows the old name
- Confirm that the argument is spelled exactly
-SteamServerName, including the leading hyphen and capitalization. - Check that the edited launcher is the one actually starting the server.
- Make sure the server was stopped and restarted after saving.
- Refresh the browser listing and search again after startup has completed.
- Verify that another server instance is not using the same query endpoint and showing the old name.
The name changes, then reverts after a restart
- On a hosted service, edit the active command-line or startup profile rather than a downloaded file.
- On a self-hosted machine, inspect scheduled tasks, service managers, container definitions, and update scripts for a second copy of the launch command.
- Save the panel value before starting; unsaved fields are not part of the generated command.
The name is cut off or displayed unexpectedly
First test a short name containing ordinary letters and spaces, enclosed in quotes. This isolates quoting or character-parsing problems from any server-browser display limitations. The available documentation does not establish a universal maximum length or a supported character set, so do not assume that an unusually long or heavily punctuated name will display identically on every client.
The panel has no visible Server Name field
Open its startup, command-line, or advanced launch-parameter editor. Some hosts expose only the generated arguments rather than separate fields. If neither is available, contact the host and ask where the active -SteamServerName value is stored. Avoid guessing at INI locations that the provider does not document.

A name change is a startup/display setting. The available documentation does not establish whether changing it has any effect on existing saves, world folders, player progress, or administrator data. Keep a backup before making unrelated configuration edits, and do not rename the <WorldName> directory merely to change the browser label. If your host warns that a setting migration is required, follow its instructions rather than moving save files manually.
Self-hosted versus hosted: which is easier?

The name is controlled by the same concept in both cases: the launch-time -SteamServerName value. The difference is who owns the command and therefore where you should make the edit.
Final verification checklist
- The server was stopped before the change.
- The active launcher or panel profile contains
-SteamServerName="Your Server Name", or its equivalent Server Name field. - No gameplay file was edited in place of the launch setting.
- The configuration was saved before the server was started.
- The process was restarted and allowed to finish loading.
- The new spelling appears in a refreshed server-browser search.
- A backup exists for any INI or world file you touched.
Launch-parameter names and panel labels can change with game or host updates. If a future update makes these instructions differ from your interface, check the current dedicated-server documentation or ask your host which setting maps to -SteamServerName.
