The setting is read when a world is generated; it does not convert an existing world. Change level-name or move the current world folder aside before restarting so the server creates a new world with the selected terrain.

What level-type controls
level-type is a Minecraft Java Edition server property that selects the generator preset used for a world. It determines the broad shape and biome behavior of newly generated terrain, such as ordinary terrain, a flat surface, larger biome regions, amplified terrain, or a single-biome surface.

The property is not a live world-conversion switch. Multiplayer servers generally stop consulting it after the world folder has been created. If the server starts with an existing world, changing the line can appear to do nothing because the server continues loading that world’s saved generator data. Trying to force a different generator onto an established world can also produce mismatched terrain or generation problems.
This guide covers Java Edition servers that use a server.properties file. Bedrock Dedicated Server uses different configuration and world-generation controls, so these property names should not be copied into a Bedrock setup.

Before you edit the server
Stop the server completely
Use the server console’s normal stop command or your host’s Stop control, then wait until the process has closed. Do not edit the file while the server is still running: it may overwrite your changes during shutdown, and world files can be left in an unsafe state if they are moved while loaded.
Back up the world and configuration
Make a copy of the current world folder and server.properties. A world backup gives you a recovery point if you accidentally select the wrong folder, change the wrong property, or discover that a new generator is unsuitable. Keep the backup outside the server’s active world directory so the server cannot mistake it for the live world.
Find the server root
Open the directory containing the server JAR and server.properties. On a self-hosted server this is usually the folder from which you launch the JAR. On a managed host, use its file manager or SFTP area and open the instance’s root directory. The file must be edited in the same instance that you restart; changing a similarly named file in a backup directory has no effect.
Change the level type step by step
- Stop the server. Confirm that the console reports a clean shutdown and that no Java server process remains active.
- Back up the existing world. Copy the folder named by
level-name, along withserver.properties. - Open
server.propertiesas plain text. A basic text editor is sufficient. Do not open it in a word processor that adds formatting or “smart” punctuation. - Locate the level-type line. It normally appears as a property beginning with
level-type=. If the line is commented out or absent, add one line using the same plain-text format as the other properties. - Enter a preset ID. For example, a flat world uses
level-type=minecraft:flat. The backslash before the colon is intentional in the properties file. - Save the file without changing its extension. The filename must remain exactly
server.properties; avoid saving a second copy such asserver.properties.txt. - Choose a new world name. Change
level-nameto a folder name that does not already contain a world, such asflat_test. Alternatively, move the old world folder out of the server root and keep the existinglevel-name. Changing the name is usually safer because it preserves the old folder untouched. - Start the server. Minecraft will generate the new folder using the selected preset. World creation can take time while chunks and spawn terrain are written to disk.
- Join and verify the result. Travel away from spawn and inspect newly generated chunks. A flat preset should produce a level surface, while amplified terrain should show unusually tall and steep landforms. If the terrain is unchanged, follow the troubleshooting section rather than deleting the backup.
When the new world is confirmed, you can copy permitted builds or player data from the backup using a deliberate migration plan. Do not replace the new world folder with the old folder and then expect level-type to regenerate it; doing so simply restores the old world.
Preset values and the terrain they create
Use the namespaced, lowercase IDs shown below for modern Java server configurations. The default value is the normal Overworld-style generator. The exact set accepted by a particular Minecraft release can change, so keep a copy of the original line and check the startup log if a value is rejected.
Value in server.properties |
What it generates | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
minecraft:normal |
Standard terrain with ordinary hills, valleys and water. | This is the default-style generator. |
minecraft:flat |
A flat world surface suitable for building, testing and redstone work. | Layer thickness, biome and structures require generator-settings when the world is created. |
minecraft:large_biomes |
Normal-style terrain with biome regions that are larger than the standard distribution. | Older releases used a different spelling; verify compatibility with your server version. |
minecraft:amplified |
Amplified terrain with dramatic height changes and steep landforms. | It can be demanding to explore and build in because of the extreme relief. |
minecraft:single_biome_surface |
A surface generated as one biome; the documented default is plains. | The single-biome surface preset cannot be customized through level-type alone. |
The namespace and colon matter. In a Java properties file, write the colon as an escaped separator, for example minecraft:normal, rather than removing the namespace or pasting an unescaped form without checking the generated file. Some server versions may fall back to a normal world when they cannot parse the value, which can look like a successful change until you inspect the terrain.

minecraft:flat selects the flat generator, but it does not by itself define custom layers. Flat-world layers, the biome and structure choices are supplied through the generator-settings property as a JSON string. That setting is also consumed only when the world is first generated.
Use the two settings together
- Set
level-type=minecraft:flatto choose the flat generator. - Set
generator-settingsto the valid JSON configuration for the desired layers, biome and structures for your Minecraft version. - Use a new
level-nameor an empty world folder so both settings are applied during creation.
JSON must remain on one property value and must use the syntax expected by the server version. A missing quote, extra character or line break can cause the server to reject the setting or fall back to defaults. If you only need the standard flat preset, leave generator-settings unchanged and change level-type alone.

Why changing the line did not change your current world
The server reused the old folder
The most common cause is that level-name still points to the original world. Minecraft sees that folder, loads its saved generator information and does not regenerate terrain. Stop the server, restore the backup if necessary, then choose an unused level-name or move the old folder outside the server root.
You generated the world before editing the property
Once a world exists, multiplayer servers do not normally reread level-type for that world. Restarting repeatedly cannot retrofit a new generator into already saved chunks. A new world is required for the preset to take effect.

The value was not parsed
Check the exact spelling, capitalization, namespace and escaped colon. Use the value format already present in a freshly generated server.properties file for your release. Read the startup console for messages about an unknown or invalid level type. If the server silently creates normal terrain, test with a new world name and the escaped namespaced value rather than diagnosing from the old world.
The file was saved in the wrong place
Large servers often have separate test and production instances. Confirm that the path containing the edited file is the same path shown by the launch script or host control panel. Also confirm that the editor did not append .txt to the filename.

The generator settings JSON is invalid
If the problem appears only after adding custom flat settings, temporarily remove the custom generator-settings value, create a new world with minecraft:flat, and verify that the basic preset works. Then add a validated JSON configuration appropriate for the exact server version.
Version-specific names and history
Instructions written for older Minecraft releases often use labels that no longer match modern world-preset IDs. The changes below explain why two guides can show different values.
Recommended Free Tools
| Version or era | What changed | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| 1.1 (12w01a) | The level-type property was introduced. |
Very old server tutorials may describe only the original generator names. |
| 1.13 | customized behaved the same as the default generator. |
Do not use it as a way to request modern custom terrain. |
| 1.16 | buffet, default_1_1 and customized were removed. |
Those values belong to historical versions and should not be copied into a current server. |
| 1.19 (22w11a) | level-type began accepting world preset IDs. |
Modern configurations use namespaced IDs such as minecraft:normal and minecraft:flat. |
Pre-1.19 material may show DEFAULT, FLAT, LARGEBIOMES or AMPLIFIED. In newer releases, the older DEFAULT and LARGEBIOMES spellings are reported as unrecognized; use the modern preset IDs instead. Because accepted IDs are version-dependent, do not assume that a value from a 2019 tutorial works on a current server. If a release rejects one of the less common presets, retain your backup, inspect the generated configuration and use the server’s own error message to identify the accepted form.
Safely replacing or keeping worlds
Keep the old world available
Changing level-name is the least destructive approach. For example, leave the existing folder in place as survival_world, set level-name=flat_world, and let the server create the new folder. You can switch back later by stopping the server and restoring the previous level-name, provided you have not allowed players to make conflicting changes in both worlds.
Best Value
Move the old folder aside
If you want to reuse the same level name, stop the server and rename the old folder, such as from world to world_backup. Do not rename it while the server is running. Keep the backup outside the active path or use a clearly different name so it cannot be mistaken for the new world.
Do not merge folders casually
World folders contain region files and dimension-specific data tied to the generator that created them. Copying selected region files into a world made with a different generator can create abrupt borders or terrain-generation anomalies. Preserve the original backup and migrate only the player, build or data files you understand, after testing on a copy.

- The server was fully stopped before editing.
- The edited file is the active instance’s
server.properties. - The line begins exactly with
level-type=and uses a supported preset ID. - The namespace colon is escaped in the file, as in
minecraft:flat. level-namepoints to a new or deliberately emptied world folder.- Any custom
generator-settingsvalue is valid JSON for the server version. - The server was restarted after saving, and the console shows world creation rather than loading the old folder.
- Terrain was checked in newly generated chunks, not only in areas created before the change.
Key limits to remember
level-type chooses a generation preset; it does not convert an existing map, alter already generated chunks or provide arbitrary flat-layer customization by itself. New terrain requires a new world-generation event, and custom flat layers require generator-settings at that same event. When an older tutorial conflicts with the values in a current server’s generated properties file, favor the current namespaced preset format and test in a new world while keeping the original backup.
