Run changelevel <mapname> in the dedicated server console or through RCON. For example, changelevel de_mirage loads Mirage. Use ds_workshop_changelevel for a Workshop map; the exact argument form can vary by server setup, so verify whether your installation expects the Workshop map name or ID before changing a live server.

What you need before changing a map
A map change is a server-side operation, not a command you enter in the normal in-game developer console. You need administrator access to one of these interfaces:
- The dedicated server’s live console, usually exposed by your hosting control panel or terminal.
- An RCON connection with a valid password and permission to execute server commands.
You also need the exact map identifier. Official maps use names such as de_mirage; spelling, underscores and capitalization should match the server’s map files. Workshop maps must be available to the server, normally through a configured Workshop Collection or a previous download.

Warn players before changing a public match. A level change ends the current round and loads a new game state. Save any configuration edits you made in the current session, and avoid restarting the server while a Workshop map is downloading.
Change to an official map with changelevel
The standard command is:
changelevel <mapname>For example:
changelevel de_mirageThe Valve Developer Community documents loading a map with either map or changelevel, and a Tencent Cloud CS2 administration guide lists changelevel <mapname> as a server-admin command (Valve Developer Community: Game Modes; Tencent Cloud: Hosting a CS2 server).
Console procedure
- Open the provider’s dedicated-server console, not the in-game client console.
- Type
changelevel, a space, and the map name. - Press Enter once and watch the console for the level-load messages.
- Wait for the server to finish loading before issuing another command. Players should reconnect to the new level when the server is ready.
RCON procedure
- Connect your RCON client to the server’s address and port with the configured RCON password.
- Send the same command, for example
changelevel de_mirage. - Keep the RCON session open and read the response or server log until the new level reports that it has loaded.
- Join the server and confirm the map name in the scoreboard or server status display.
RCON does not use a different map-change syntax; it sends the server command remotely. If the RCON client reports an authentication or connection error, fix that connection first—the map command has not reached the server.
changelevel versus map
Both commands can load a map, but they are not interchangeable operationally. A CS2 command guide describes changelevel as moving the running server to another map while keeping players connected, whereas map can reset server variables or disconnect everyone (VRedux: CS2 change map command). That behavior can depend on the server build and current configuration, so test on a private instance before using either command in a tournament or public event.

If your goal is simply to move a populated server from one official map to another, start with changelevel. Reserve map for a deliberate reset or for a troubleshooting test where losing connections is acceptable.
Changing to a Workshop map
Workshop maps are handled differently from the official map files. The command reported by current CS2 server guides is:

Other guides describe an ID-based form. Because the sources do not agree and Valve command syntax documentation was not available for this specific command, treat the argument as installation-dependent.
Use a Workshop Collection
The Docker documentation specifies that ds_workshop_listmaps and ds_workshop_changelevel apply when a Workshop Collection is set. Configure the collection in your hosting panel or server startup settings before attempting a collection map. A collection gives the server a defined set of Workshop items to download and expose; without it, a map may not be considered available even when its page exists on Steam.

- Set the collection in the server’s Workshop or startup configuration.
- Restart or start the server using that configuration if your host requires a startup reload.
- Use the documented listing command,
ds_workshop_listmaps, through the server console or RCON to see the names the server recognizes. - Pass the recognized name to
ds_workshop_changelevel. If the command rejects the name, check whether your build expects the Workshop ID instead.
Do not copy a map’s browser title verbatim unless the server listing shows that exact value. Workshop titles can contain spaces or punctuation, while the server’s internal name may not.
First-time downloads can look like a freeze
When the server does not already have a requested Workshop map, it may download the item before changing levels. Game Server Kings warns that the first download can make the console appear unresponsive; restarting at that point starts the download again (Game Server Kings: Adding Steam Workshop maps for CS2).

A restart is a recovery action, not a first response.
Do not use map_workshop in the dedicated-server console
Game Server Kings reports that map_workshop is flagged for client-side use and does not host a Workshop map when typed into a dedicated server console. On a server, use ds_workshop_changelevel instead (Game Server Kings: Adding Steam Workshop maps for CS2).

Load a Workshop map at startup
If the server should begin on a Workshop map after every restart, configure the Workshop collection and initial map in the host’s startup settings rather than waiting for an administrator to issue a command. Host Havoc describes loading a Workshop map at startup alongside a standard starting map (Host Havoc: Loading Workshop maps on a CS2 server).
Control panels label these fields differently. Look for settings named Workshop Collection, collection ID, startup map or equivalent. Enter the collection information supplied by your Steam Workshop setup, select the initial map if the panel provides a map field, save, and restart once. After startup, use ds_workshop_listmaps to confirm that the collection is mounted before attempting a live change.
Do not add an unverified parameter copied from another host’s panel. Startup flags differ between providers; use the labels and syntax shown by your server software or control panel. The runtime command remains useful for moving between maps after the server is online.

For a staffed server, the following sequence reduces avoidable disruptions:
- Identify the target. Confirm whether it is an official map or a Workshop item, and copy the server-recognized name from your map list where possible.
- Check availability. For an official map, verify that the server installation contains it. For Workshop content, confirm that the collection is configured and the item appears in
ds_workshop_listmaps. - Announce the change. Tell players the target map and expected loading window, especially if a first-time Workshop download is possible.
- Choose the least disruptive command. Use
changelevelfor an official map. Useds_workshop_changelevelfor a collection Workshop map. Avoidmapunless a reset is intentional. - Execute once. Send the command in the server console or RCON. Repeated submissions can queue confusion while the first transition is still running.
- Watch the logs. Confirm download and mount progress for Workshop content, then wait for the level-load confirmation.
- Validate in-game. Join or reconnect, confirm the map name, and check that the expected player/team state and server settings are present.
- Record failures. Note the exact command, argument, timestamp and console error. That information distinguishes a name problem from a missing collection or download issue.
Troubleshooting map changes
“Unknown command” or no response
First verify that you are connected to the dedicated server console or authenticated through RCON. An in-game client console is not the same execution context. If the server still rejects ds_workshop_changelevel, confirm that the server build supports the Workshop command and that a Workshop Collection is configured. For an official map, retry with the documented changelevel form.
“Map not found” or an immediate failure
- Check spelling, underscores and the internal map name rather than the Workshop page title.
- For Workshop maps, run
ds_workshop_listmapsand use one of the names it returns. - Confirm that the collection is set on the same server instance receiving the command; editing a local game or a different node does not make the map available here.
- If the item is new, allow the download to finish and inspect the console before retrying.
The server appears stuck after a Workshop command
Do not restart immediately. A first download can leave little visible feedback while files are retrieved or mounted. Keep the console open, check the host’s live log and wait for progress. Restart only after you have established that the process is no longer advancing or the host reports a failed download. A restart during an active download begins the same work again.

Players were disconnected
A hard disconnect is more likely when map is used, when the server restarts, or when a host applies a startup configuration. For a routine official-map transition, use changelevel and wait for the level-load sequence. If players still drop, test the same command on an empty private server and review the server log; network timeouts, not the map name, may be the cause.
The command accepts the map but loads the wrong Workshop item
Stop issuing additional changes and inspect the map list. The disagreement among published guides means one server may interpret the argument as a map name while another expects a Workshop ID. Use the value shown by your server’s listing output, and keep a small, documented mapping of collection item IDs to the names your installation reports.
The server returns to another map after changing
Check automated rotation, match-management plugins and startup or scheduled commands. A successful changelevel can be immediately overwritten by a rotation rule. Temporarily disable the competing rule on a test server, perform one change, and re-enable it after updating the rotation entry.

Key decisions for administrators
- Official map, live players: use
changelevel <mapname>and monitor the transition. - Workshop map already in a configured collection: list the available maps, then use
ds_workshop_changelevelwith the argument form your server recognizes. - Workshop map not previously downloaded: issue the command once and watch the console; do not restart merely because the server is quiet.
- Need a full reset: understand that
mapcan disconnect players or reset variables before using it on a populated server. - Map must load after every restart: configure the Workshop collection and startup map in the host settings, then verify availability after startup.
The dependable pattern is simple: identify the server-side map name, use changelevel for official content, use the Workshop-specific command for collection maps, and let the console finish any first download before intervening.
