How to Change the Link Preview Image on LinkedIn

LinkedIn Page admins can upload a custom preview image while composing a Page post. For stale URL previews, fix the website’s Open Graph metadata and refresh it with Post Inspector; existing posts do not change.

You can upload a custom link-preview image when publishing a post as a LinkedIn Page, provided you are a Page super admin or content admin. For a personal-profile post, LinkedIn’s documented sharing flow generates a preview from the website; to fix a stale or incorrect preview there, update the site’s Open Graph metadata and refresh the URL with LinkedIn Post Inspector. Post Inspector affects new posts, not posts already published.

Change the image on a LinkedIn Page post

LinkedIn documents a custom-image option for Page posts. You need to be a super admin or content admin for the Page. The upload customizes that post; it does not change the image metadata on the website.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open the LinkedIn Page in its admin view.
  2. In the Start a post box, paste the webpage URL and wait for LinkedIn to generate the preview.
  3. Select the Edit icon on the preview.
  4. Choose the image control and upload the image from your computer. If needed, use Edit article title to change the title shown with the link.
  5. Choose the audience and publish the post.

Prepare the image to fit LinkedIn’s guidance

LinkedIn recommends a 1.91:1 aspect ratio at 1200 × 627 pixels for a Page-post preview. An image less than 200 pixels wide may appear as a small thumbnail on the left. LinkedIn says images are not cropped on mobile; images with other ratios may display in full with subtle white padding.

Can you change the image on a personal-profile post?

LinkedIn’s documented custom-upload instructions are for Pages, not ordinary member posts. Its general link-sharing guide describes pasting a URL and using the generated preview; it does not document the same custom-image control for a personal-profile composer. If you control the linked website, change its sharing metadata and refresh LinkedIn’s cached preview before sharing again. If you do not control the site, you may not be able to choose a different image for a personal post through LinkedIn’s documented general sharing flow.

Refresh a stale or incorrect preview

LinkedIn may reuse cached information when a URL has been shared before. Use LinkedIn Post Inspector to submit the URL and check the preview LinkedIn retrieves. LinkedIn says, “You can use the Post Inspector as a tool to refresh the URL.” The refreshed information applies to new posts containing that URL; existing posts keep their old preview.

  1. Open Post Inspector and enter the complete URL you plan to share.
  2. Review the preview it returns. If it still shows the wrong image or text, check the website’s metadata and whether LinkedIn can retrieve the image.
  3. After the preview is correct, create a new post with the URL. Do not expect the refresh to edit a post that has already been published.

Fix the image at the source with Open Graph metadata

If you manage the website, LinkedIn uses Open Graph metadata to generate a link preview. Check that the page’s HTML provides the intended values for og:title, og:image, og:description, and og:url. The image URL should point to the image you want LinkedIn to show.

LinkedIn’s shareability guidance specifies a maximum image file size of 5 MB, minimum dimensions of 1200 × 627 pixels, and a recommended 1.91:1 ratio. Even an image that meets those specifications may fail to appear if the site blocks LinkedIn from retrieving it or stores it in a protected directory. See LinkedIn’s guidance on making your website shareable on LinkedIn, then run the URL through Post Inspector to check the refreshed preview.

Choose the right fix

Situation What to do What changes
You are publishing as a Page admin and want a different image for this post Upload an image in the Page post preview’s Edit controls The image on that Page post
A new post still shows an old image or title Check the site’s Open Graph values, make sure LinkedIn can retrieve the image, then use Post Inspector The URL preview used for future posts
The old image is on a post that is already live Publish a new post after correcting the Page upload or URL preview Post Inspector does not change existing posts
You are sharing from a personal profile and need a custom image LinkedIn’s general sharing guide does not document the Page-only upload control for member posts; update the website preview if you control it The generated link preview, subject to LinkedIn retrieving the site metadata

Troubleshooting

  • The Edit or image-upload control is missing: Confirm you are publishing from the Page admin view and have a super admin or content admin role. The documented custom-image workflow is for LinkedIn Pages.
  • The preview keeps showing the previous image: Submit the URL to Post Inspector, inspect the returned preview, and make sure you are creating a new post after refresh. Existing posts retain their previous preview.
  • The image does not appear at all: Verify the Open Graph image URL and dimensions, keep the file within LinkedIn’s 5 MB maximum, and check that the image is not in a protected directory and that the site does not block LinkedIn’s retrieval.
  • The thumbnail is unexpectedly small: Check the image width; LinkedIn says images under 200 pixels wide may display as a small thumbnail on the left.
  • The image has whitespace or looks different on mobile: LinkedIn says mobile images are not cropped and images with other aspect ratios can appear in full with subtle white padding. Prepare a 1200 × 627 image at 1.91:1 when you want to follow its recommendation.
  • You need to correct a live post: The Post Inspector refresh is for new posts. Publish a new post with the corrected Page image or refreshed website preview rather than expecting the old post to update.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a LinkedIn preview editor: it cannot replace LinkedIn’s link-preview image. It can capture a public webpage if you need a screenshot of the page itself. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the example below saves a screenshot of a public URL as WebP.
