For Gboard, add a language under Settings → Languages → Add keyboard, then touch and hold the space bar while typing to switch between enabled languages. To select a different keyboard app, use your phone’s keyboard picker; its location varies by manufacturer and software version.
Choose what you want to change
- Active keyboard app: Choose which installed keyboard appears when you type, such as Gboard or another keyboard.
- Typing language or layout: Add a language or layout to your current keyboard, then switch between enabled options while typing.
- Keyboard type or appearance: Adjust options offered by your keyboard. On the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE described in Samsung’s English EU user manual, for example, you can choose a keyboard type for a language under Languages and types.
The steps below focus on Gboard and a documented Samsung Galaxy example. Other Android phones may use different menu names or controls.

Add or change a language in Gboard
- Open an app with a text field and tap it to show Gboard.
- Open Gboard Settings. Depending on your version, tap the keyboard’s Settings icon or open the feature menu, tap More, then Settings.
- Tap Languages, then Add keyboard.
- Choose a language and the layout you want, then tap Done.
You can also use Android Settings: Settings → System → Keyboard → On-screen keyboard → Gboard → Languages. Choose a language, enable the layout you want, and tap Done. The exact route can vary; if a menu is missing, search Settings for “keyboard” or follow your phone maker’s instructions.

With more than one language enabled in Gboard, touch and hold the space bar and choose a language. To use a globe key instead, open Gboard Preferences and turn on Show language switch key. If that option is unavailable, turn off Show emoji switch key.

Changing the typing language in Gboard does not change the Android system language. Google states: “When you change languages with Gboard, your Android device’s language settings aren’t affected.” See Google’s instructions for typing in a different language.
Switch the active keyboard app
Open a text field and look for your phone’s keyboard picker. The control and menu labels depend on the manufacturer and Android version. For the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE, Samsung documents a keyboard button on the navigation bar:

- Tap the keyboard button on the navigation bar to choose a different keyboard.
- If the button is not visible, open Settings → General management → Keyboard list and default and turn on Keyboard button on navigation bar.
These are steps for the cited Galaxy S23 FE manual, not universal Android settings. If you use a different phone, look in its keyboard settings or search Settings for “keyboard.”

Change the keyboard type on the documented Samsung example
On the Galaxy S23 FE, open the keyboard’s Settings, tap Languages and types, choose a language, then select the available keyboard type. Other devices and keyboards may offer different layouts and options.

If Gboard is missing or not working
Switch back to Gboard or enable it
If another keyboard is active, open a text field, touch and hold the globe key, then tap Gboard. If Gboard is not available in the picker, open Settings → System → Keyboard → On-screen keyboard and turn on Gboard. Menu labels can differ by device. Google’s Gboard troubleshooting guide covers switching back and common problems.
Try basic troubleshooting
- Check for a Gboard update and restart your phone.
- If the problem continues, clear Gboard’s cache.
- Reinstalling Gboard is another option. Clearing its app data or storage resets Gboard to its default state, so use that only if you are prepared to lose its saved preferences.
