Then check that the title and publisher match the official listing, and pause if the offer, installer, or security warnings seem suspicious. These checks reduce risk; none, including a clean antivirus scan, proves a file is safe.
Use an official source you reached yourself
Open the game store or publisher’s known website directly, then find the game’s listing there. Don’t treat a link as trustworthy just because it came from a friend or appears on a familiar platform: Steam warns that malicious software can be linked from sources users normally trust. Its guidance is to download software from the official source and be skeptical of software links from others (Steam Support: Account Security Recommendations).

Check the spelling of the domain and confirm you are on the expected store or publisher page. Steam publishes official login-domain guidance for Steam specifically; those domains are not a universal test for other platforms. If the source is unknown, don’t install the game. The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) gives the same advice for games that have been illegally downloaded (BSI: Gaming security).
Check the listing and the offer
- Match the title and publisher. Compare both with the official listing. A mismatch, unfamiliar publisher, or redirect to a separate installer calls for extra caution. A match is a useful cross-check, not proof that a particular file is safe.
- Be wary of a deal that seems implausible. BSI identifies unusually low prices as a possible sign of a dubious source, not definitive proof of fraud.
- Look for basic legal information. A missing legal notice is another warning sign BSI cites. Treat it as a reason to investigate rather than conclusive evidence.
These signs matter especially when a download is offered as a pirated copy, cheat, fake demo or beta, or an unexpected gaming utility. Steam warns that malware can be disguised as these kinds of downloads (Steam Support: Account Security Recommendations).

Inspect what the installer asks you to do
Stop if the game arrives bundled with an unrelated utility, cheat, or unfamiliar launcher that you did not expect. Be cautious about requests for excessive or suspicious permissions, too.
