What the difficulty settings control
ARK does not use one simple “easy/normal/hard” switch on a dedicated server. Wild-creature levels are determined by server configuration values. The two settings administrators encounter are DifficultyOffset and OverrideOfficialDifficulty. They belong in the [ServerSettings] section of GameUserSettings.ini.

The commonly cited community-wiki relationship is:
maximum wild-creature level = OverrideOfficialDifficulty × 30
That gives a value of 5.0 for a level-150 maximum and 10.0 for a level-300 maximum. The “30 levels per point” figure comes from ARK community wiki references, not from a published Studio Wildcard specification, so treat it as the practical rule used by server administrators rather than a formal guarantee for every future release.

Choose the maximum level before editing
Decide whether you want a fixed maximum across maps or the map’s normal difficulty scaling. If you need the same cap on every map, use an override. If you deliberately want the map’s own official scaling, use the offset method and omit the override.

Use the exact decimal result of the calculation. For example, a target of 180 requires 6.0. If your target is not divisible by 30, the game’s level-generation behavior may not produce the exact number you expect; test on a backup or staging server before changing an established world.
Back up the configuration and stop the server
Do not edit a live configuration while the server is running. A running process can overwrite your changes during shutdown, and a malformed file can prevent the next start.
- Notify connected players and stop the ARK server through your host panel, service manager or start script.
- Copy
GameUserSettings.inito a safe location. Keep the original filename and make a second backup after a known-good restart. - If you operate several worlds, confirm that you are editing the configuration for the correct instance. A cluster can have separate configuration directories for each map.
Find GameUserSettings.ini
Linux dedicated server
Host guides commonly place the Linux dedicated configuration in:
/ShooterGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/GameUserSettings.iniThe leading installation directory can differ, so use the path inside your own ARK installation rather than creating a second file elsewhere. If the server is managed by a hosting panel, the panel may expose the same file through a configuration editor instead of a file browser.

Windows single-player or locally hosted game
Single-player and Windows installations use a WindowsNoEditor configuration folder. The exact parent path depends on whether you are using Steam, another launcher or a customized installation. Search within the ARK installation for GameUserSettings.ini, then verify that the file contains your world’s server settings before editing it.
Hosted control panel
Many commercial panels provide fields for “Difficulty Offset” and “Override Official Difficulty,” while others provide a raw INI editor or a command-line field. Panel labels and save behavior vary. If a panel has both a command-line override and an INI value, use one clearly documented method and check the generated file after saving. A panel can also regenerate the file when the server starts, so confirm that your values remain present after one restart.
Set the values in the server settings section
Open GameUserSettings.ini in a plain-text editor. Locate the line:
[ServerSettings]Add the settings directly below that header if they are missing. Do not put them in Game.ini, and do not place them above the section header.
Fixed level-150 configuration

OverrideOfficialDifficulty=5.0This is the common configuration for a maximum wild level of 150. Because the override supplies the final difficulty value, the offset is normally not used for the level calculation once the override is active. Keeping DifficultyOffset=1.0 is nevertheless common in guides and makes the file’s intended baseline explicit.

Fixed level-300 configuration
[ServerSettings]
DifficultyOffset=1.0
OverrideOfficialDifficulty=10.0The same calculation produces a level-300 cap. Higher settings can substantially change the strength and progression of wild creatures, so make a backup and tell players that existing creatures will not change until the respawn step is completed.
Offset-only configuration
[ServerSettings]
DifficultyOffset=1.0Use this form only when you want the game’s ordinary difficulty calculation. The default offset is reported as 0.2; many administrators choose 1.0 because it is easier to reason about. Without an override, the resulting maximum can depend on the map and the game’s official-difficulty calculation.
Save the file as plain text. Make sure the editor has not changed the filename to GameUserSettings.ini.txt and has not inserted quotation marks around the values. Use one setting per line and do not add spaces inside the key name.
Restart and repopulate wild creatures
- Start the server and wait until it has completed its normal world load.
- Join as an administrator or connect through RCON.
- Run the command:
DestroyWildDinosThe command removes currently spawned wild creatures. New creatures then spawn using the updated difficulty. Tamed creatures, player structures and inventory are not the intended target of this command, but you should still warn players and keep a backup before using any destructive administrative command.

A restart by itself does not retroactively raise or lower the level of wild creatures that are already loaded in the world. If you skip DestroyWildDinos, you may continue seeing the old level distribution until those creatures die naturally and are replaced.

Verify that the change took effect
After the respawn cycle has had time to repopulate the map, inspect several wild creatures in different regions. Look for levels approaching the selected cap rather than judging the result from one spawn: random spawn rolls and species-specific level distributions can make a single creature appear unusually low.
- Confirm the edited file still contains the intended value after the restart.
- Check that the line appears under
[ServerSettings], not under another section. - Verify that you edited the active map instance, especially on a cluster.
- Use the administrator console or RCON to run
DestroyWildDinosif old creatures remain. - Check the server log for configuration or startup errors if the server fails to load.
DifficultyOffset versus OverrideOfficialDifficulty
When an offset is appropriate
An offset leaves the game’s normal calculation in control. The community-cited formula is DifficultyOffset × (Official Difficulty − 0.5) + 0.5, with the resulting difficulty multiplied by 30 for the maximum creature level. Because the official value can differ by map, the same offset does not necessarily create the same cap everywhere.
When an override is appropriate
An override supplies the final difficulty value directly. This is the predictable choice when an administrator wants a level-150 or level-300 cap regardless of map variation. Community reports consistently describe the offset as ignored once an override is present. One forum report observed level-300 creatures with an override of 10 even while the offset was set to 0.5, which is consistent with the override taking precedence; that report is anecdotal and should not be treated as a confirmed engine specification.
Why setting both can be confusing
Guides often show both lines because DifficultyOffset=1.0 is a familiar baseline and some panels expect the field to be populated. For the actual cap, calculate from OverrideOfficialDifficulty when an override is present. If your goal is map-dependent scaling, remove the override rather than trying to combine the two formulas.
Host-panel and command-line differences
Some hosts expose an “Override Official Difficulty” command-line option instead of asking you to edit the INI. The command-line form and the INI form are intended to set the same final value, but panel implementations differ. A panel may write a command-line parameter at launch, rewrite GameUserSettings.ini, or prioritize one source over the other.
- Stop the server before changing either field.
- Set the override in the panel’s server-configuration or command-line area.
- Save, start the server once, then inspect the generated configuration if the panel permits it.
- Ensure only the intended value is active; remove an obsolete conflicting entry if the host documents that behavior.
- Run
DestroyWildDinosafter the server is online.
If the panel reverts the value, contact the host with the exact setting name and the startup time at which it was overwritten. Do not repeatedly edit a file that the panel regenerates on every launch.
Version and cap considerations
Version-specific limits have changed. A community wiki records patch 247.95 as allowing values above 4.0 through an OverrideOfficialDifficulty command-line parameter. A wiki.gg changelog lists patch 312.27 as setting the maximum override difficulty to 5. Those references establish historical milestones, not a guaranteed cap for every current ARK edition or future patch.

ARK: Survival Evolved, later editions and host-managed builds may not expose identical limits. Treat a claimed cap of 5 as the latest limit identified in those community references, not as a universal current rule.
Troubleshooting
The maximum level did not change
- Stop the server and confirm the line is in
GameUserSettings.iniunder[ServerSettings]. - Check spelling and capitalization: use
OverrideOfficialDifficulty, not a shortened or spaced variant. - Confirm that the host panel did not overwrite the file during startup.
- Run
DestroyWildDinosafter the restart; existing wild creatures keep their old levels. - Make sure you are inspecting wild creatures, not tamed creatures whose levels are already fixed.
The server will not start
- Restore the backed-up INI and start the server to confirm that the file is the cause.
- Remove duplicate copies of the same key from the active section and re-enter one clean line.
- Check for accidental smart quotes, hidden filename extensions or non-text formatting.
- Try a conservative override such as
5.0and consult the version’s documented limit before using a higher number.
Levels vary between maps
If you configured only DifficultyOffset, map-specific official difficulty can produce different maximums. Use a direct override when a fixed cap is more important than the map’s normal scaling. If an override is already present, verify that every map instance in the cluster receives the same setting.
The panel shows one value but the game behaves as if another is active
This usually indicates that the panel’s command-line setting, generated INI or map-specific configuration is taking precedence. Stop the server, inspect the effective file and launch settings, then remove the stale source according to the host’s instructions. Avoid changing several interfaces at once because it becomes difficult to identify which value the server read.
A safe change procedure for an established world
- Record the current values and back up the entire configuration directory.
- Choose the target maximum and divide it by 30 to obtain the override value.
- Stop the correct map instance.
- Edit
GameUserSettings.iniunder[ServerSettings], or use the host’s documented equivalent. - Start the server and verify that the setting remains after launch.
- Tell players that wild creatures will be repopulated.
- Run
DestroyWildDinosthrough the administrator console or RCON. - Inspect new spawns and keep the backup until the result is confirmed.
This sequence separates configuration errors from spawn timing: first prove that the server accepted the value, then remove old wild creatures so the new setting can be observed.
