To build business automation with OpenClaw, rent a Linux VPS, install a supported Node.js release, run openclaw onboard --install-daemon, connect a messaging channel and an LLM API key, then harden and monitor the server before giving it access to business systems. A VPS keeps the gateway, workflow state and credentials under your administration, while the model API you choose may still receive prompts or data sent for processing.

What OpenClaw business automation on a VPS actually is
OpenClaw is the gateway and agent process running on your server. A user or another system sends a task through a connected channel; OpenClaw authenticates the request, invokes the configured language-model API and tools, performs the permitted actions, and returns a result through that channel.
For a business, the VPS is useful when you need control over where the gateway stores configuration, logs, session data and integration credentials. It can also provide a stable always-on endpoint instead of relying on a workstation that sleeps. This is not the same as keeping every piece of data private: requests sent to an external LLM, search service or scraping provider leave the VPS and are subject to that provider’s terms and retention policy.

Typical workflow
- A customer-service worker sends a command in a connected chat channel.
- The OpenClaw gateway checks the channel and the permissions you configured.
- The agent calls an LLM API and, where allowed, a CRM, order system, reporting database or other tool.
- The result is written to the relevant system and reported back to the requester.
Examples described by current vendor material include CRM synchronization, order processing, web scraping, DevOps alerts, social-media operations and data reporting. Start with one narrowly defined workflow; broad, unrestricted tool access makes errors and credential exposure harder to detect.
OpenClaw VPS requirements
Official installation guidance currently lists Node.js 24.16 or newer, or 26.1 or newer, and recommends Node 26. When Node is absent, the installer provisions Node 26 on macOS and Node 24 LTS on Linux. Treat older third-party references to Node 22, or reports that a particular release rejected Node 23, as version-specific history rather than your target configuration. Check the official OpenClaw documentation immediately before installation because supported versions can change.

No gateway RAM figure is stated in the official summaries reviewed. Independent VPS guides therefore give a range rather than a guaranteed minimum:
| Workload | Suggested resources from independent guides | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Single simple bot that only calls APIs | 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 20 GB SSD | A claimed lower floor, not a production guarantee. |
| Development or testing | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM | Suitable for a small number of experiments with little concurrency. |
| Light production | 2 cores, 4 GB RAM, 40–60 GB SSD | Leaves more room for logs, packages and modest workflow state. |
| Several automations or multiple users | 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, at least 20 GB SSD | The safer practical target when jobs overlap or tools are heavier. |
Plan for at least 4 GB of RAM for a business deployment; 8 GB is safer when several automations or users run at once. A third-party guide reports that an npm installation can be killed on a 1 GB machine and that the operating system may terminate OpenClaw under memory pressure. Leave disk headroom for package caches, logs, backups and temporary files rather than sizing only for the initial install.
Network and operating-system requirements
- Use a current 64-bit Linux distribution supported by your VPS provider. Ubuntu 22.04 is used in one published walkthrough.
- The official gateway port is 18789. Restrict it with your firewall and expose it publicly only when your design requires that access.
- Some Docker articles describe a web interface on port 3000, but that value is not confirmed by the official material; do not open it until the image and documentation show that your deployment uses it.
- Confirm that the VPS uses full virtualization suitable for Docker. Independent guides warn that Docker does not run properly on OpenVZ-based systems.
Expected recurring cost
Entry-level VPS estimates suitable for OpenClaw are roughly $4–$6 per month, but prices, regions and included transfer change frequently. One comparison lists a 2-vCPU/4-GB configuration at €3.79 (about $4 at the time of comparison), while another basic configuration is listed at $6. These are provider pricing snapshots, not a quote. Budget separately for LLM API usage, search requests and scraping credits; those variable charges can exceed the server bill.
Native installation or Docker on a VPS?
Native Linux installation
A native install has fewer layers and is the simplest route for one gateway. The official installer can install OpenClaw on Linux, macOS or WSL2:

curl -fsSL https://openclaw.ai/install.sh | bash -s -- --no-onboard
The --no-onboard flag installs the software without immediately starting the setup wizard. npm, pnpm and bun are alternatives; recent npm versions may require --allow-scripts=openclaw, while the official page says that flag is unnecessary on npm 11.15 and earlier. Use the installer unless you have a reason to manage the package yourself.
Docker deployment
The official Docker procedure creates host directories, builds an openclaw:local image, runs onboarding, generates a gateway token, synchronizes the .env file and starts the gateway through the repository’s docker-compose.yml. It provides process and filesystem isolation and makes image-based updates easier to stage, but adds Docker, Compose and volume management to your operating burden. A build that exits with code 137 means the VM ran out of memory; resize the VPS or reduce competing services before retrying.
Choose Docker when you already operate Compose workloads, need a repeatable image-based deployment or want stronger separation from other services. Choose native installation when one gateway on a dedicated VPS is your priority and you want the fewest moving parts.
How to set up OpenClaw on a VPS
1. Provision the server and create an administrator account
Select a Linux VPS with the memory headroom above and a virtualization type that supports your chosen deployment. Log in once with the provider’s initial account, create a non-root administrator, and use that account for routine work. Keep the provider console available in case an SSH change locks you out.
2. Patch the operating system before installing OpenClaw
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
Reboot if the kernel or core services were upgraded. Remove packages and services you do not need. A smaller attack surface is especially important before connecting CRM, commerce or messaging credentials.
3. Lock down SSH and the firewall
Install an SSH key on the administrator account, test a second session using that key, and then disable password authentication and direct root login in the SSH server configuration. Keep only the SSH port and the OpenClaw gateway port you actually use. On Ubuntu, a typical firewall sequence is:

sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
sudo ufw allow 18789/tcp
sudo ufw enable
If the gateway is accessed only through a reverse proxy or private network, do not open 18789 to the entire internet. Add brute-force protection and review firewall logs regularly. Store API keys in protected environment or configuration files, never in shell history, chat messages or a public repository.
4. Install OpenClaw
Run the official installer as the administrator account you created:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
curl -fsSL https://openclaw.ai/install.sh | bash -s -- --no-onboard
Open a new shell if the installer changes your PATH. Confirm that the command is available and that the runtime meets the documented Node requirement before continuing.
5. Run onboarding and install the background service
openclaw onboard --install-daemon
This is the official route to register the gateway as a background service. On Linux, the service starts at boot and is intended to restart after a crash. Follow the wizard to select the model provider, enter its API key and configure the channel you will use for testing. Do not paste production secrets into a shared terminal recording or support ticket.
6. Verify the gateway before connecting business accounts
- Run
openclaw doctorand resolve reported configuration or dependency errors. - Run
openclaw gateway statusand confirm that the service is running. - Run
openclaw dashboardto open the local administration interface. - Send a harmless test prompt through the chosen channel and verify that the reply returns.
If you skipped onboarding during installation, the daemon can also be registered later with openclaw gateway install.
7. Connect a messaging channel
For a Telegram test channel, create a bot with Telegram’s official BotFather, copy the bot token into the onboarding flow or the documented configuration location, and send a test message from an approved account. Use a dedicated test group or account first. Confirm that the bot cannot execute a privileged action merely because a user can post in a public group.

8. Add one business integration at a time
Start with read-only access where possible. Test a CRM lookup, report generation or alert before permitting writes, refunds, order changes or outbound messages. Record which account owns each token, when it expires and how to revoke it. Only after the workflow passes those checks should you connect production accounts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security hardening for business automation
A misconfigured VPS has a larger exposure risk than a managed automation service because you own patching, network policy and secret handling. Before production use:
- Apply operating-system security updates on a schedule and remove unused services.
- Use a non-root account, SSH keys and disabled password login.
- Allow the minimum inbound ports and, where feasible, restrict administration to a VPN or fixed office addresses.
- Protect configuration and environment files with owner-only permissions and rotate API keys when staff or vendors change.
- Maintain a curated allowlist of OpenClaw skills and tools. Disable capabilities a workflow does not need.
- Separate test and production channels, credentials and data stores.
- Back up configuration and workflow definitions without placing raw secrets in an unencrypted archive.
- Review logs for repeated authentication failures, unexpected tool calls, unusual outbound traffic and unusually large model requests.
Use least privilege at every layer: a reporting automation should not hold a token that can delete records, and an alerting bot should not be able to send messages to every customer.
Designing reliable OpenClaw business automations
Define a trigger, an action and a boundary
Write each automation as a small contract: what starts it, which systems it may read, which actions it may take, and what requires human approval. For example, “when a new order arrives, retrieve its status and draft a response” is safer than “manage orders.” Put irreversible actions behind confirmation or a separate service account.
Make jobs idempotent
Network retries and daemon restarts can deliver the same event twice. Use an event ID or timestamp checkpoint so a CRM update, invoice request or notification is not duplicated. Keep a record of the last successful run and the reason for any retry.
Control data sent to the model
Send only fields needed for the decision. Mask payment details, credentials and unnecessary personal information. Define how long logs and conversation history remain on the VPS, and verify the LLM provider’s retention and regional processing terms before using regulated data.
Best Value
Add a human fallback
Every customer-facing or financial workflow needs an escalation path. Return a clear “needs review” state when the model is uncertain, an API is unavailable, a permission check fails or an output does not match the expected format. A short delay is preferable to an unreviewed destructive action.
Recommended Free Tools
Operations, monitoring and updates
Check openclaw gateway status after reboots and upgrades, and run openclaw doctor when a channel, model or tool stops responding. Monitor RAM, CPU, disk growth and swap. Memory pressure commonly appears first as a killed npm build, slow responses or a service that disappears after a restart.
Update the operating system and OpenClaw during a maintenance window. Back up the configuration, note the current Node and OpenClaw versions, update one environment at a time, and send a test message before reopening production channels. For Docker, pin and record the image you deployed, preserve Compose volumes, and keep enough disk for the previous image while you verify the new one.
Troubleshooting common failures
The installer or build is killed
Exit code 137 during the official Docker build indicates insufficient VM memory. Stop unrelated services, add swap only as a temporary safety measure, or resize to at least 4 GB RAM (8 GB for several concurrent automations). A 1 GB VPS is especially likely to fail during npm installation.
Node is rejected
Check node --version and compare it with the official requirement of Node 24.16+ or 26.1+, with Node 26 recommended. Remove conflicting PATH entries or install the supported release before rerunning onboarding. Do not rely on a guide that specifies an older major version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The daemon is installed but no reply arrives
- Run
openclaw gateway statusandopenclaw doctor. - Confirm the channel token and LLM key are present and not expired.
- Check that the firewall or cloud security group permits the required traffic.
- Send a minimal test prompt and inspect service logs for authentication, DNS or rate-limit errors.
The dashboard cannot be reached
Confirm the gateway’s configured bind address and port. Official material identifies 18789; a Docker article’s port 3000 is not a universal OpenClaw value. Prefer an SSH tunnel or authenticated reverse proxy over exposing an administration interface directly to the internet.
Docker will not start
Verify that the VPS is not OpenVZ-based, that the Docker daemon is running, that Compose volumes are writable and that the generated .env file contains the gateway token. Rebuild only after preserving configuration and checking available memory.
When a VPS is the right architecture
A VPS is a good fit when you need an always-on gateway, control over deployment and logs, or a place to keep automation state under your organization’s administration. It is less attractive when you cannot patch Linux, rotate secrets, monitor uptime or define who may invoke tools. In that case, a managed automation service may reduce operational work, although its data and execution environment are controlled by that provider.
For most small businesses, begin with one 4-GB Linux VPS, one channel, one model provider and one read-mostly workflow. Move to 8 GB or more when concurrent jobs, browser tooling, multiple users or large logs create sustained memory pressure. Keep production credentials out until the test workflow, firewall, access policy, backups and recovery procedure have all been exercised.
