How to Change Speech, Playback, and Language Settings in Google Translate

Step-by-step paths for changing Google Translate playback speed, spoken output, dialect, tone, offensive-word filtering, and microphone input on Android, iPhone, iPad, and computer.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Translate puts speech controls in different places on Android, iPhone and iPad, and a computer browser. On Android, open Menu > Settings; on iPhone or iPad, open Profile > Settings; in a computer browser, use the Settings control at the top right of the translation panel. From those menus you can change spoken output, speech region or dialect, voice pace, and—where a language supports it—voice tone. Microphone translation also depends on browser permission and language support.

The labels below reflect Google’s help documentation reviewed on October 13, 2026. Google can move controls in a later app release, so use the closest equivalent if your screen is worded differently.

Choose the setting you actually want to change

“Voice settings” in Translate can mean several different things. Identifying the goal first prevents you from changing the wrong control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Goal Android iPhone or iPad Computer browser
Have translated text read aloud automatically Menu > Settings > Speech input > Speak output The documented iOS settings page does not list an equivalent automatic-output switch. Click Listen after a translation; the computer instructions document playback rather than an automatic-output switch.
Listen to a written translation Tap Listen Use the audio control beside the translation Click Listen
Slow the spoken audio Menu > Settings > Speed Profile > Settings > Pronunciation speed Top-right Settings > choose a pace
Change dialect or speech region Menu > Settings > Region Profile > Settings > Speech region Select the source and target languages; available speech behavior follows language support.
Change voice tone Menu > Settings > Tone; male or female where offered No tone selector is listed in the iPhone/iPad instructions. No tone selector is listed in the computer instructions.
Speak into Translate Use the microphone in the app and select a supported spoken language. Use the microphone in the app and select a supported spoken language. Allow browser microphone access, then select the languages; spoken language is not automatically detected.

Speech input is what Translate hears from your microphone. Spoken output is what Translate says back. Playback pace changes the speed of that audio, while a region or dialect changes the available pronunciation for a language. These are separate controls, so changing one does not necessarily change the others.

Android: change speech, voice, dialect, and playback speed

Android places the relevant controls under the Translate app’s main menu. Open the app before following the paths below.

Open Android’s Translate settings

  1. Open the Google Translate app.
  2. Tap Menu.
  3. Tap Settings.

If a label is not visible, check that you are in the Translate app’s settings rather than Android’s general sound or accessibility settings.

Make Google Translate speak automatically

To have translated text spoken without tapping the speaker control each time:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Menu > Settings.
  2. Tap Speech input.
  3. Turn on Speak output.

This setting controls automatic spoken output after Translate produces a translation. It does not turn on microphone transcription by itself; microphone input is a separate action.

Change Android playback speed

To slow down the voice for listening practice, accessibility, or a difficult phrase:

  1. Open Menu > Settings.
  2. Tap Speed.
  3. Choose Normal, Slow, or Slower.

For a translation already on screen, tap Listen. The speed you selected applies to the spoken playback. “Slow” and “Slower” are the documented choices; there is no numeric rate field in the Android instructions.

Change the spoken accent or dialect

Android uses the Region setting for available language varieties:

  1. Open Menu > Settings > Region.
  2. Select a language.
  3. Select an available region or dialect.

The region list is language-dependent. A missing dialect does not necessarily indicate a broken installation; Google only offers regional choices for languages with those variants in Translate.

Change the voice tone where supported

Some Android language combinations offer a tone selector:

  1. Open Menu > Settings.
  2. Tap Tone.
  3. Select Male or Female, if those choices appear.

Google documents this option only for some languages. If Tone is absent, there may be no selectable tone for the language or region currently chosen.

Allow or block offensive words in speech input

Android’s control is under Speech input. Google’s documented behavior is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • To translate offensive words, turn Block offensive words off.
  • To prevent offensive words from being processed in the speech-input experience, turn that control on.

Read the switch label carefully before changing it, because turning the blocking option on and off produces opposite results.

iPhone and iPad: speech region, pronunciation speed, and word filtering

On Apple mobile devices, Translate uses the profile menu rather than the Android-style three-line menu.

Open the iPhone or iPad speech settings

  1. Open Google Translate.
  2. Tap the Profile icon.
  3. Tap Settings.

These settings are inside Translate. They are separate from iOS spoken-content, VoiceOver, and general audio controls.

Slow down or restore pronunciation speed

  1. Open Profile > Settings.
  2. Tap Pronunciation speed.
  3. Choose Normal, Slow, or Slower.

Use Normal to restore the standard pace. The iPhone/iPad label is Pronunciation speed, not Android’s shorter Speed label.

Change the speech region or dialect

  1. Open Profile > Settings > Speech region.
  2. Choose the language.
  3. Select one of the regions offered for that language.

Google notes that speaking dialects are available only for some languages. The absence of a region selector for a particular language is therefore an availability limitation, not proof that the app is malfunctioning.

Block offensive words

To filter offensive words in speech input on iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open Profile > Settings.
  2. Tap Speech input.
  3. Turn on Block offensive words.

The iOS switch is documented as an opt-in block. This wording differs from the Android instruction for translating offensive words, so do not assume the same switch state across platforms.

When headphones help

If an audible screen reader is speaking while Translate is trying to transcribe you, Google recommends using headphones. Headphones keep the screen reader’s audio from being picked up by the microphone. This is a conditional accessibility workaround, not a general requirement for Translate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Computer browser: play translations more slowly and configure microphone input

Use Google Translate in a desktop or laptop browser for the computer-specific controls.

Change playback pace

  1. Open Google Translate in your browser.
  2. Select the source language and target language.
  3. Enter or paste text so a translation appears.
  4. Click Listen to hear the translation.
  5. To change the pace, click Settings at the top right of the Translate panel.
  6. Choose Normal, Slow, or Slower.

The computer page documents a playback control rather than a separate voice-tone or automatic-speak setting. If you need a different accent, first check whether the selected language offers a speech region on a mobile device; the browser instructions do not list an equivalent region menu.

Set up microphone translation

  1. Open Google Translate in the browser.
  2. Select the languages you want to use.
  3. Select the microphone input control.
  4. When the browser asks for access, allow microphone permission for the Translate site.
  5. Speak clearly while the input control is active.

Google notes that computer microphone translation does not automatically detect the language being spoken. Select the spoken language before you begin; otherwise Translate may listen with the wrong language configuration even when the microphone itself works.

Browser support and permission errors

Chrome is fully supported for voice input according to Google’s help information. Safari and Edge have limited support. If the browser reports that microphone permission is needed, open the browser’s site-permission settings, locate the Translate site, set Microphone to Allow, and reload the page. The exact wording of the permission screen varies by browser version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If permission is allowed but Translate still cannot hear you, check that the operating system has the intended microphone selected and that another application is not holding exclusive access. Then try speaking again in a quiet room, connect an external microphone, or raise the microphone’s input volume—steps Google suggests for hearing problems.

Fix “Voice input isn’t available”

This message can mean the selected spoken language does not support voice input. Change the spoken-language selector to a language that supports the feature and test the microphone again. A working microphone and an allowed browser permission cannot add voice input to a language that Translate does not support.

Language availability explains many missing controls

Translate does not expose identical speech features for every language. A language may have text translation but no microphone input, a dialect selector but no tone selector, or a spoken output voice without regional choices. Google specifically qualifies speaking dialects, tone choices, and voice-input availability by language.

Use this diagnostic sequence when a control is missing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the intended source, target, or spoken language is selected.
  2. Check whether the control appears after switching to a commonly supported language.
  3. On mobile, reopen the platform-specific settings path rather than looking in the phone’s global sound settings.
  4. On a computer, verify browser microphone permission before treating the missing microphone button as an audio-hardware problem.
  5. If the feature appears for one language but not another, treat that difference as language support behavior.

For Android, a disabled speech-input button has a specific implication in Google’s help wording: “If this button is disabled, the spoken language can’t be translated.” In that case, select a supported spoken language rather than repeatedly changing volume or reinstalling the app.

Playback, speech input, and system text-to-speech are separate

Changing Translate’s playback speed does not change every voice on the device. Android’s Speed, iPhone/iPad’s Pronunciation speed, and the computer’s top-right Settings control apply to Translate’s documented spoken playback.

Chromebook text-to-speech settings are a different layer. Chromebook accessibility controls determine the voice and language used by Select-to-speak and related products. They are not the same as Google Translate’s in-app speech or playback settings. If Select-to-speak sounds different from Translate, adjust the Chromebook accessibility settings for the former and Translate’s own settings for the latter.

A practical setup for common use cases

Language learning or pronunciation practice

  • Choose the desired source and target languages.
  • Set playback to Slow first; use Slower for individual sounds or short phrases.
  • On Android, choose a matching Region and, where offered, a Tone.
  • On iPhone or iPad, use Speech region and Pronunciation speed.
  • Tap or click Listen repeatedly to compare the same phrase at a consistent pace.

Hands-free Android output

  1. Open Menu > Settings > Speech input.
  2. Turn on Speak output.
  3. Set Speed to Normal, Slow, or Slower.
  4. Test a short translation and adjust the pace before using longer text.

Private or accessibility-focused listening

  • Use the platform’s slower playback option rather than increasing system volume to make speech easier to follow.
  • If a screen reader is audible during iPhone/iPad transcription, use headphones as Google recommends for that situation.
  • On a computer, use an external microphone or raise input volume only when Translate is having difficulty hearing you.

Troubleshooting checklist

The voice is too fast

Open the platform’s playback control and choose Slow or Slower. Android calls the control Speed; iPhone and iPad call it Pronunciation speed; a computer browser uses the top-right Settings control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The accent or dialect is wrong

On Android, open Menu > Settings > Region. On iPhone or iPad, open Profile > Settings > Speech region. Select the intended region if it is listed. If it is not listed, that language may not have another speaking dialect in Translate.

The male or female tone choice is missing

Android’s Tone menu is available only for some languages. The iPhone/iPad and computer instructions do not document a tone selector. Try a language with a documented tone choice, but do not expect every language to expose one.

Translate will not hear the microphone

  • On a computer, allow microphone access for the Translate site in browser settings.
  • Use Chrome for the most complete documented voice-input support; Safari and Edge have limited support.
  • Confirm that the spoken language is selected; computer microphone translation does not automatically detect it.
  • Try a quieter room, an external microphone, or a higher microphone input level.
  • If the message says voice input is unavailable, select a language that supports the feature.

The microphone button is disabled

Check the spoken language first. Google states that a disabled button means the selected spoken language cannot be translated. Changing browser permission or microphone hardware will not make an unsupported spoken language available.

Screen-reader audio appears in the transcription

For iPhone or iPad, use headphones so the screen reader’s output is not fed back into the microphone. This recommendation addresses the specific interference case described by Google.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing Chromebook voice settings did not change Translate

Chromebook text-to-speech settings control Select-to-speak and related accessibility products. Return to Translate’s own Android, iOS/iPadOS, or browser controls for Translate playback and speech behavior.

Quick platform reference

Platform Where to start Pace labels Region or dialect label Important limitation
Android Translate > Menu > Settings Speed: Normal, Slow, Slower Region Tone and dialect choices depend on language; Speak output is under Speech input.
iPhone/iPad Translate > Profile > Settings Pronunciation speed: Normal, Slow, Slower Speech region Speaking dialects are available only for some languages; no documented tone selector.
Computer browser Translate page > top-right Settings for playback Normal, Slow, Slower No separate region path documented Microphone permission is required; Chrome is fully supported, Safari and Edge limited.
Chromebook system speech ChromeOS accessibility settings System text-to-speech controls System voice and language These settings affect Select-to-speak and related products, not Translate’s own controls.

The reliable rule is to begin with the device-specific path, then verify language support. Android uses Menu > Settings, iPhone and iPad use Profile > Settings, and computer playback uses the top-right Settings control. Once those locations are clear, most “missing” voice controls are explained by platform differences, browser permissions, or the selected language.
