How to Use Your Pixel as a Webcam in Video Calls

Connect your Pixel by USB, choose Webcam in the phone’s USB settings, and select it in your video-call app. Here are the requirements, compatibility limits, and fixes for missing or paused video.

Connect the Pixel to the other device with a USB cable that supports data, choose Webcam in the Pixel’s USB settings, then select the phone in your calling app’s camera menu. The receiving device must implement USB Video Class (UVC). No special webcam app is required on the Pixel.

What the Pixel webcam mode does

Pixel phones can present their built-in camera to another device over USB as a webcam. The connection is wired: the phone sends a camera feed through a USB data connection, and the receiving device makes that feed available to software that supports camera selection.

Google’s Pixel Camera Help describes the feature this way: “You can use your Pixel phone as a webcam with a USB cable that supports data.” That requirement is important. A cable that only supplies power can charge the phone but cannot provide the connection needed for webcam mode.

The receiving device also needs implemented USB Video Class support. Google lists laptops, TVs, cars, and other phones and tablets as examples of possible hosts, but it does not publish a complete model-by-model or app-by-app compatibility list. Treat UVC support, rather than a particular operating-system label, as the key compatibility condition.

What you need before starting

Requirement What to check Why it matters
Pixel phone The phone must expose the USB option labeled Webcam after connection. That setting changes the USB connection from ordinary charging or file use to camera output.
USB cable Use a cable that supports data transfer and has connectors that fit both devices. A charge-only cable does not meet Google’s setup requirement.
Receiving device Confirm that it implements USB Video Class (UVC). UVC is the compatibility condition Google identifies for recognizing the Pixel as a camera.
Video-call software The application must offer a camera selector or otherwise accept the host’s available camera. The final choice is made in the calling application, and its menu names vary.

Google does not specify a particular cable model, USB generation, phone stand, tripod, resolution, frame rate, or operating-system version for this feature. An adjustable stand or compact tripod can make positioning easier, but it is optional and is not part of the required setup.

Connect the Pixel and turn on Webcam mode

  1. Connect the devices. Plug the Pixel into the computer or other receiving device with a USB cable that supports data. Check both ends: the connectors must fit securely, and the cable must be intended for data transfer rather than charging only.
  2. Open the USB notification on the Pixel. After connection, tap the notification that says Charging this device through USB. If several notifications are present, look specifically for the USB charging notification rather than a battery or accessory alert.
  3. Choose the USB function. Under Use USB for, select Webcam. This is the switch that makes the Pixel offer its camera to the connected host.
  4. Open the webcam controls when needed. Tap the Webcam notification at the top of the Pixel’s screen to preview and adjust the camera feed.
  5. Select the phone in the call. On the receiving device, open the video-call application’s camera selector and choose the Pixel webcam if it appears. Google’s help page does not document the menus of individual calling applications, so the exact location and wording depend on the app.

Once the application is using the Pixel, leave the USB cable connected. Unplugging it removes the camera from the host and ends the wired webcam connection.

Select the Pixel in your video-call application

USB setup and in-app selection are separate steps. The phone can be correctly configured while the call still uses the computer’s built-in camera. Look for the application’s camera, video, or device selector—often in a settings panel, a pre-call preview, or a menu attached to the video button—and select the newly available Pixel camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The names and locations of these controls are application-specific. If the Pixel does not appear, do not assume the phone needs a different camera app; first work through the cable, USB-mode, and UVC checks below. Some calling applications may detect a newly connected camera only after reopening their settings or restarting the application, but the Google documentation does not guarantee a particular app’s behavior.

Preview and adjust the feed from the Pixel

The Webcam notification on the Pixel is the phone-side control point. Tap it to preview the camera and make adjustments available in that interface before or during a call.

Webcam mode does not lock the phone to one screen. Google says you can continue using the Pixel normally, including navigating to other apps or turning off the screen. Keep the phone positioned safely if you move away from the webcam controls; touching other apps can change what is visible on the phone without changing the host’s camera selection.

For a stable view, place the phone on a firm surface or use an optional mount. Positioning the lens at roughly face height and avoiding a loose cable helps prevent accidental movement, but a mount is an accessory recommendation rather than a Google requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which devices can receive the Pixel camera?

The receiving device—not merely the calling application—must implement UVC. Google gives laptops, TVs, cars, and other phones and tablets as examples of host categories. Those examples do not establish that every product in a category works, nor do they provide a list of supported call applications.

Receiving device What must be true What is not established by Google’s instructions
Laptop or desktop computer The USB host must implement UVC, and the call software must expose the Pixel as a selectable camera. No universal computer-model, operating-system, resolution, or frame-rate guarantee is given.
Tablet or another phone The device must accept a UVC camera over its USB connection. Compatibility is not guaranteed for every model or every calling app.
Television or car system The system must implement UVC and provide software that can use the camera feed. Google does not promise that every TV or vehicle system supports video calls or camera selection.

Pixel-to-Pixel limitation

Do not plan to use one Pixel phone as a USB webcam for another Pixel phone. Google’s current documentation says Pixel devices do not support UVC cameras, so a Pixel phone cannot currently serve as a webcam for another Pixel device.

What happens while Webcam mode is active

The phone continues charging

The Pixel charges normally over USB during webcam mode. Charging does not prove that the camera connection is active, however: a charge-only cable can provide power without exposing the phone as a webcam.

The stream can pause when another camera use starts

Google says the webcam stream pauses if the Pixel receives a video call or an application requires use of the phone’s camera. The stream resumes automatically after that camera use ends. If the host suddenly shows a frozen image, check whether the Pixel is handling an incoming video call or another camera-using application before changing the USB setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The screen can be off

You may turn off the Pixel’s screen while it remains in webcam mode. The phone can also be used for other tasks, so keep an eye on the Webcam notification when you need to check its status.

Troubleshoot a missing Webcam option

1. The Pixel only shows charging

  • Unplug the cable and reconnect it firmly at both ends.
  • Use a different cable that is known to support data transfer. A cable’s ability to charge is not evidence that it carries data.
  • Tap the notification labeled Charging this device through USB, then look again under Use USB for.
  • Check that the cable connectors fit the Pixel and the host correctly; an adapter or connector that supplies power may not provide the required data path.

2. Webcam is not listed under Use USB for

The most useful first test is a known data-capable cable and a fresh USB connection. If the option still does not appear, the connected host or the particular Pixel configuration may not expose the feature. Google’s instructions do not provide a model-by-model eligibility table or a separate command to force Webcam mode, so avoid relying on unsupported settings or third-party camera utilities.

3. The call application cannot see the Pixel

  • Confirm that Webcam is selected on the Pixel, not merely a charging mode.
  • Verify that the receiving device implements UVC.
  • Open the calling application’s camera selector and look for the Pixel after reconnecting the USB cable.
  • If the app has a pre-call preview and an in-call device menu, check both; their labels and locations can differ.
  • Do not infer that the phone is incompatible solely because one application lacks a camera selector. Google does not document individual app menus, so the application may impose its own limitations.

4. The picture pauses during a call

Check the Pixel for an incoming video call or another application using its camera. Google identifies those events as causes of an automatic pause. End the competing camera use; the webcam stream should resume when that use ends.

5. The cable works for charging but not for webcam

Replace it with a cable explicitly intended for data transfer. Charging behavior alone cannot distinguish a full USB data cable from a power-only cable, and Google does not name a required cable brand or model.

Practical setup choices

Wired USB connection

The built-in Pixel feature uses a direct USB connection. It avoids installing a phone-to-computer webcam service, but it requires the phone to remain physically connected and the host to support UVC. This is the only setup described in Google’s instructions.

Phone placement

A desk stand, adjustable mount, or small tripod is optional. Choose one that leaves the USB connector accessible and supports the phone without putting tension on the cable. These accessories help with framing but do not add webcam compatibility.

Using the phone for other tasks

Because Google allows normal phone use and screen-off operation in Webcam mode, you can keep the phone available for ordinary tasks. Remember that any activity that takes control of the camera can pause the webcam stream.

Details you should not assume

The official instructions establish the connection method and behavior, but they do not establish a universal list of supported Pixel models, computer operating systems, calling applications, image resolutions, frame rates, audio behavior, camera controls, or performance figures. Do not promise those details when advising someone else. Verify the specific host and application if a particular workflow matters.

Likewise, UVC support is necessary according to Google’s description, but the documentation does not say that every UVC-capable device will expose every Pixel camera control. The safest expectation is that the host receives the Pixel as a camera and that the calling application decides which camera options it presents.

Complete pre-call checklist

  • Use a USB cable that supports data, not charging only.
  • Confirm both connectors fit the Pixel and the receiving device.
  • Connect the phone and tap Charging this device through USB.
  • Select Webcam under Use USB for.
  • Tap the Webcam notification to preview or adjust the feed.
  • Make sure the receiving device implements UVC.
  • Choose the Pixel in the video-call application’s camera selector.
  • Keep the phone positioned securely and the cable free of tension.
  • If the feed pauses, check for a video call or another app using the Pixel’s camera.
  • Do not expect Pixel-to-Pixel webcam use, because Google says Pixel devices do not support UVC cameras.

Bottom line

A data-capable USB cable, the Pixel’s Webcam USB setting, and a UVC-capable receiving device are the essentials. After selecting the phone in the call application, use the Webcam notification for preview and adjustments. The phone can keep charging and remain usable, but another camera-using app or incoming video call temporarily pauses the feed.
