For smoother motion, set the PS5 game preset to Performance Mode, then check the individual game’s graphics menu and choose its motion-focused option if one is available. The preset is only a default preference: each game determines which modes it offers and how they affect image quality. Display features such as 120 Hz output and VRR can help only when both the game and the connected screen support them.
Choose Performance Mode as your PS5 game preset
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets.
- Select Performance Mode or Resolution Mode and set Performance Mode as your preference.
- Start the open-world game and open its own graphics, display, or video settings. If it offers a performance- or frame-rate-focused mode, select it when smoother motion matters more than visual detail.
Sony describes Performance Mode as a way to make motion smoother, and Resolution Mode as the option for higher graphic quality. These presets apply only to games that offer the modes; Sony does not specify a universal resolution or frame rate for either choice across games. Check the game’s own menu for the options it actually supports. Sony’s PS5 game-presets guide

Check your TV’s video-output settings
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output to review the console’s output settings and the connected HDMI device’s reported capabilities, including resolution, VRR, and HDR. Leaving Resolution on Automatic lets the PS5 select the highest resolution the TV supports. Sony’s PS5 resolution and video-output guide
120 Hz Output
Turn on 120 Hz Output if your display and the game support 120 Hz. This setting enables the compatible video-output path; it cannot add a 120 Hz mode to a game that does not have one. If a compatible game produces display problems, Sony recommends turning the setting off.
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
VRR adjusts the display’s refresh rate in real time when supported by the screen and game. It may reduce or eliminate some tearing or frame-pacing issues, but the result varies by TV, game, and the game’s selected visual mode. The optional Apply to Unsupported Games setting can cause unexpected effects; turn it off if you encounter them. For current compatibility, check the console support guidance and the specific game and display. Sony’s VRR announcement, April 25, 2022
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM)
On a compatible TV, ALLM can switch the television to a low-latency mode while you play. Some TVs label this setting Game Mode; availability and naming depend on the TV. Sony’s PS5 features page

Match the setting to what you want
| Priority | Starting choice | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Smoother motion | Performance Mode, if the game offers it | Sony describes this preset as making motion smoother. The game controls its implementation. |
| Higher graphic quality | Resolution Mode, if the game offers it | Sony describes this preset as providing higher graphic quality; there is no single cross-game resolution or frame-rate result. |
| Smoother presentation on a supported setup | Enable VRR for a compatible display and game | Effects vary by TV, game, and selected visual mode. |
| 120 Hz video signal | Enable 120 Hz Output when supported by the display and game | The setting enables output support but does not create a 120 Hz game mode. |
| Display-compatible resolution | Keep Resolution on Automatic | The PS5 selects the highest resolution supported by the connected TV. |
When 1440p testing is useful
If your screen supports 1440p, choose Test 1440p Output in Video Output to check SDR and HDR at 60 Hz or 120 Hz, as well as VRR support. Sony notes that a 4K game displayed on a 1440p screen may benefit from improved anti-aliasing through supersampling. This is a display and image-quality consideration, not a general performance boost or a substitute for choosing a game’s motion-focused mode.

Sony recommends checking the display, firmware, port, and intermediary equipment as well as the cable. A new cable is not a routine requirement for changing graphics settings; the PS5 includes a cable Sony recommends for this use. Sony’s 4K and video-output troubleshooting guidance
