If a game will not launch or download, first identify whether the problem affects one game, one launcher, or the whole device. Then check service status and system requirements before repairing files, changing download settings, or reinstalling anything. These steps focus on PC games using Steam or the Epic Games Launcher; console menus and other launchers have different procedures.
First, identify what is failing
Before changing settings, note the game, launcher or store, operating system, exact error message or code, and when the problem began. Check whether the issue affects one title, several games in the same launcher, or games across multiple launchers. This is a useful way to narrow the layer to investigate, not a guaranteed diagnosis.

- One game: start with that game’s requirements, installation state, and files.
- Several games in one launcher: check the launcher, its service status, and its download or library settings.
- Games in multiple launchers: look beyond a single game installation; the device, network, or a broader service issue may be involved.
Check service status and system requirements
Look at the platform’s live service-status page before treating a service-wide problem as a fault with your PC. Epic says an outage or system-wide failure may resolve once service is restored; its launcher troubleshooting guide also directs users to check service status: Epic Games Launcher troubleshooting.

Steam notes that a system at or just below a game’s requirements may prevent it from launching: Steam: A game won’t launch. A launcher cannot make an incompatible system meet a game’s requirements.

Repair the launcher or game installation
Restart and update
Close and reopen the launcher, restart the computer, and install any available launcher updates. If other games work but one does not, move on to that game’s installation and file checks rather than repeatedly restarting.
Verify game files
When available, use the launcher’s built-in file verification before uninstalling. Steam says verification checks whether game files are correctly installed: Steam: Verify Integrity of Game Files. Epic also provides verification for its game installation-state error: Epic Games Store: LS-0009, Game is not installed.

Follow the exact error-specific instruction
Do not apply a fix for one error code to a different problem. For Epic error LS-0009, check the game’s state in the library: if it does not show Launch, Epic advises verifying the files; if it shows Launch despite the error, Epic advises uninstalling and installing the game again. Epic also warns that manually moving or modifying game files can trigger LS-0009 and recommends downloading through the launcher. The full steps are in Epic’s LS-0009 support article.
If a game will not download or install
A download failure can involve the launcher cache, the library or install location, available storage, a drive problem, security software, or the network. Check these factors before repeatedly restarting a download or removing the game.

- Check the install location and free space. Confirm the launcher is using the intended library or folder and that the drive has room for the installation. Steam’s installation guidance includes checking the drive for errors: Steam: Troubleshooting Game Installation Issues.
- Clear the launcher cache using its supported procedure. Steam and Epic document cache checks in their installation or launcher troubleshooting guidance: Steam installation troubleshooting and Epic Games Launcher troubleshooting. Use the instructions for your launcher rather than deleting files at random.
- Consider interference from security or monitoring software. Steam notes that security software and programs that monitor disk or network activity can interfere with installation. Check the platform guidance before changing protections; do not leave security features disabled as a routine fix.
- Try a different network if practical. Steam includes this as a troubleshooting check. If the download works on another network, the original connection or its settings may be involved.
- For Epic Launcher problems, check updates and background apps. Epic’s guide also lists graphics-driver checks, system requirements, launcher cache, background applications, and reinstalling the launcher where appropriate: Epic Games Launcher troubleshooting.
When to contact support
If the supported checks do not resolve the problem, contact the game publisher or platform support with the details that distinguish your case: the exact error text or code, game title, launcher, operating system, whether other titles are affected, and the steps you already tried. For Steam’s missing-executable error, Steam directs users to restart and verify files, then contact Steam Support if the problem remains: Steam: Missing Executable. Epic notes that an unresolved launcher issue may require contacting the hardware manufacturer in its launcher troubleshooting guide.
A general troubleshooting flow cannot establish a game-specific bug or diagnose hardware failure without the affected device, game, and error details. For consoles, other launchers, or a different error code, use that platform’s current official support instructions rather than assuming the Steam or Epic PC steps apply.
